The 72-Hole Florida Championship was contested on four, superb, Orlando area courses on December 2nd-5th. The players participating got a taste of top amateur-style 72 hole competition on Professional Tour quality courses. The weather was as good as it gets this time of year in Orlando with Friday's event at 75 degrees by mid-day, and each successive day slightly warmer under abundant sunshine. Friday's event was at Crooked Cat at Orange County National, the home every other year of the PGA tour's Q-School. The course was in fine condition and the greens were very good. The course from the Blue tees at around 6450 yards didn't look like a stern test when viewed from the tee box, but the undulating fairways, bunkering, and subtle breaking greens proved a strong test for most of the field. Glenn McIntyre was the exception. Glenn found the course very suitable for his game and he found most of the fairways and putted consistently well. Glenn shot a fine gross score of 81, which tied for second best on the day, and his net score of 66 was 4 better than anyone else in the field. On Saturday, the event was a new site for B.A.G.S., the very fine Falcon's Fire. The course played longer than the 6435 from the Blue tees because of some wetness in the fairways the result of some recent over seeding. However, the greens were very nice and ran true. The scoring was much better than Friday despite a swirling wind that came up about an hour into the round. Defending low gross and net Champion, Chris Bae, had no trouble in reaching the par 5's in two despite the wind, and shot a superb 1 under par gross score of 71. Chris 's net score of 70 was the best of the day. Orin Mayers was second low gross with a 78, and moved into contention in the Net Division with an even par net score. Glenn McIntyre was right there with the leaders for the day with a net score of 74. After 36 holes, Glenn M. had a 5 stroke lead over Orin M. Chris Bae was 6 back and Andrew Leonard was 7 behind. Harmony Golf Preserve is a beautiful course on a Nature Preserve and always a B.A.G.S. ' favorite. This year there were some problems with the greens because of fungal disease the got into the greens and caused some bare spots. Because of this the greens couldn't be cut as closely as in past events here and they were slow and grainy. Tom Dromgoole made a strong charge with a very fine gross score of 76, and his net score of 69 moved him up the leader board past Chris Bae who struggled. Glenn McIntyre and Orin Mayers both played well enough to hold onto the first and second spots by good margins. The player of the day was Chad Fisher, who showed something of what he might be capable on a more consistent basis, when he came in with a fabulous gross score of 84 good for a net score of 65. Well done, Chad! Doug Bray and Paul McCurley also played well with net scores of even par 72. Waldorf Astoria GC proved to be an absolute stunning layout and was the fitting site for the final round. This was as close as it gets to playing in a Pro event with immaculate conditions all the way from the practice facilities with the pyramid of practice balls and turf range to the classy layout and mint greens. B.A.G.S. played the White tees from about 6400 yards and the class of the field for the event rose to the top again. Glenn McIntyre despite making a triple on the closing hole was in with an even par net score of 72 to win the overall Net Division by an impressive 7 shots.. His closest competitor, Orin Mayers, playing in the same group with Glenn, had an wonderful 5 birdie round, but off set the brilliance of these holes with enough missed shots to keep him at 5 over par gross 77, and an even par net score of 72. This was easily good enough to lock up second place in the overall tournament in the Gross and Net. Chris Bae shot a 75 and was a runaway winner in the Low Gross competition, and won his record 5th title. His net 74 wrapped up fourth place in the Net. Tom Dromgoole finished well with a gross 81, and took third place overall in the Net and third in the low gross. Chad Fisher followed up his fine Sunday performance with a net 73, the fourth best on the day.
The make up date event from an earlier rain out at Hickory Hill had to moved to the Meadow at Peabody because of the recent snow storm. Thursday, November 3 turned out to be a good day for golf. It was fairly mild but very breezy and the strong gusts effected the scoring. Chris Kreilkamp played some very consistent golf with a 4 over par gross score of 40 on the opening nine, and was even better with a closing 39 on the second nine which included a nice birdie on the tight 350 yard par 4 seventeenth. Andrew Wilson played with Chris and was right with him until he bogeyed the last 3 holes for an 81. Chris also was the low net with a 3 under par score of 68. Mike Gilmore played well and was second with a net score of 72.
The October snow storm closed Foxborough CC for the Monday, October 31 date. The event was moved to Waverly Oaks where playing conditions were excellent. After a cool and frosty start to the event, it warmed up considerably. Bob Drury played well on the opening nine, and his only big mistake was the tee shot over the pond in front of the tee on the ninth hole. Bob hit a low diving shot which didn't clear the 160 yards or so of water, and Bob ended up making a triple bogey 7. Bob didn't let this mental mistake bother him too greatly, and after knocking a six iron to within 2 feet on the 163 yard par 3 fourteenth and making the putt, Bob was just 1 over par on the second nine. After a bogey on the long 450 yard par 4 fifteenth, Bob finished with 3 straight pars for 38 on the second nine. Bob's total of 80 was the low gross best. In the Net Division A competition, Glenn McIntyre was the best. Glenn shot 40-41-81 for second low gross on the day, and his total of 39 stableford points or 3 under par, was easily the best. In the Net Division B competition, Larry Brewster made it two for two, winning both Waverly Oaks events that B.A.G.S. had at this course this year. Larry played some really fine golf and had an amazing total of 37 points after competing just his fifteenth hole. Larry had trouble on the long 600 yard par 5 sixteenth and made a triple, but he still was in with 40 points or 4 under par net for an impressive 4 point win over Russ D'Auria and Joanne Latour.
The morning started off cool and overcast for the mid-morning shotgun start at CC of Halifax for the Wednesday, October 26th event. The weather improved throughout the course of the day, and some peeks of sun could be seen during the round. The course was in great condition with some of the best putting surfaces we see all year. Rey LeMaine has been very consistent over the last month or so and was in complete control of this event with a 9 over par score of 81 for the low gross victory. Rey's net score of even par 72 was 1 better than Bob Steward and Bob Hudd who both played well. Brian Bakke was just behind with a net 74 for fourth position.
B.A.G.S. made its second trip to Ferncroft CC for the Monday, October 24th event. The course was in superb condition with greens that were in absolute mint condition for the noon time shotgun start. We were fortunate for once with the weather for this late season date, and caught a beauty with the afternoon temperature getting above 60 degrees and with some warm sunshine. Bob Drury started on the 7th hole in the shotgun and played 7 - 18 in just 2 over par with birdies on 10 and 15. The trouble started when he reached the 400 yard par 4 first hole where he made a double bogey 6, and after a nice par on the second hole, hit his tee shot left into the hazard on the dogleg left 380 yard par 4 third and made another double bogey to 6 over par. Bob played holes 4-6 in 1 over par for a 79 and the low gross win. Gary Grogan played well and finished second with an 81. In the Net Division A competition, Buzz Speers played some very consistent golf. Buzz had just 1 double bogey on the card and 7 pars and a rare birdie on the 160 yard par 3 sixteenth hole. Buzz's 38 points or 2 under par net was good for 3 point win over Gary Grogan. In the Net Division B competition, Paul Kudarauskas was the man. Paul, now finishing his 15th year as a member of B.A.G.S., was by far the best in this event. Paul had 3 net birdies and a net eagle worth 4 stableford points with a gross birdie on the 350 yard downhill fourth hole. Paul's total of 38 points was 5 better than: Dick Weiner, Phil D'Amour, and Mark Jezwoski.
Poquoy Brook was in excellent condition for the Saturday, October 22 event. It turned nice by mid-morning after a cool start to the day with the temperature well into the 60's by noon. Bob Steward had a fine closing nine score gross score of 4 over par 40 which was good for 18 stableford points to help get him the Net Division A win. Ron Violette and Johnathan Law were just 1 point behind in second place. Johnathan's gross score of 80 was good enough for the low gross win as the course played long and tough from Blue tee markers at over 6900 yards.. In the Net Division B competition off the White tees, John Kirby had his best result of the year. John got the victory with 37 points or 1 under par net despite making a triple bogey 7 on the first hole for no points, and finishing in a similar manner. In between, John had 7 net birdies and effectively had all 37 points on 16 holes. Paul McCurley also tripled the 350 yard opening hole and had another triple on the more difficult 430 yard par 4 seventeenth, but still had 36 points on the other 16 holes to take second place by 3 points over Buzz Speers and Don Cybulski.
The Merrimack Valley GC was shifted from Wednesday to Thursday, October 20 following an a big rain storm that saturated the course. The water drained off enough so that all the holes were opened for play, but some were made shorter because the back tees couldn't be accessed. Jeff Mucciarone continued his winning ways with a fine 4 over par 73. Rob Parsi played well, and came in 3 strokes back in second with a 76. In the Net Division competition, Bob Hudd liked the shortened course, and took full advantage. Bob had a net eagle and 5 net birdies and was in with 38 points. Brian Bakke played quite well and had 6 net eagles, and was just 1 point behind Bob with 37 points. Dick Malo and Mike Gilmore had enough good holes to get near the top, and they tied for third with 36 points or even par net.
The string of excellent weather for early Fall golf continued for the Saturday, October 15 event at Sandy Burr. The course was in good condition and the greens were very quick. Jeff Mucciaone continued in his high level of play. Jeff got off to a quick start with a birdie on the 480 yard par 5 opening hole, and played the first 13 holes in 3 under par with his 2 other birdies coming on holes 6 and 11. After pars on 13 & 14, Jeff had back to back bogeys on 14 and 15 after hitting his tee ball too far to the left on 14 and too far right on 15. Jeff made a scrambling par on 16, and two putted for par 17. Jeff made a bogey on the 405 yard par 4 finishing hole from just short of the green in two for a 1 over par total of 73. Well back in second place were: Rick Lewis, Brian Boyle, and Johnathan Law with 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Mark DelVecchio overcame 2 zero point holes on the opening nine by playing holes 7 - 9 in 2 under par gross with back to back birdies 8 & 9 for 20 points total. Mark had no more birdies the rest of the way, but still had 4 pars on the closing nine for 15 more points. Mark's total of 35 was good for a tie for the win with J. Law. In the Net Division B competition, John Faucher was easily the best. John shot a fine gross score of 39 on the first nine for an amazing total of 22 points that included 5 net eagles. John's scoring on the second nine was not nearly as spectacular, but he still had 2 net eagles and made 17 points despite making a double bogey 6 on the 376 yard par 4 fourteenth for zero points. Alex Willis opened with a birdie, and had just 1 zero point hole on the day, and took second position with 35 points or 1 over par net. Paul Kudarauskas played well enough to take the third spot with 32 points
It was a perfect day for golf for the Tuesday, October 11 event at Spring Valley CC. The temperature was right around 68 degrees with bright sunshine. Jeff Mucciarone has been playing some fabulous golf this Fall, and his either won or tied for first in his last 4 events. This day was one his best. No one in B.A.G.S.' 12 plus years of playing at this event site had shot better than a 74. Jeff was even par after nine holes, and with a birdie on the 400 yard par 4 twelfth hole after a nice drive and approach shot got his second birdie on the day to go to 1 under par. Jeff made pars on 13 & 14 and after hitting his tee shot to 12 feet on the 215 yard par 3 sixteenth got his third birdie of the day when he sunk the putt. Jeff made routine pars on 17 & 18 by getting on each green in regulation and was in with another entry into the B.A.G.S.' Record Book with an even par or better score. In the Net Division A competition, Jeff was again a decisive winner despite getting no handicap strokes. In the Net Division B competition, John Sawyer was on his game for the first 12 holes before he started running out of gas. John shot a fabulous gross score of 42 on the opening nine with an incredible total of 4 net birdies and 1 net eagle for a massive 24 stableford points. John had 10 more points through the twelfth hole before the gas tank started to read empty. John gathered whatever he had left and got a much needed gross par on the 18th for 3 points to get to 38 total. This was just enough to get the win over John Faucher who played extremely well and was in with 37 points or 1 under par net.
The greens were in fabulous condition for the Sunday, October 9 event at George Wright GC. They were as fast and smooth as any other public course that we play all year. It turned unusually warm for this time of the year with the temperature reaching into the 80's. Jeff Mucciarone and Johnathan Law both played well were and tied for the low gross title with 5 over par 75's. In the Net Division A competition, Chris Kreilkamp was definitely the man. Chris had the hot putter all afternoon and played the first 11 holes in just 1 over par gross. Chris hit his only poor tee shot of the day on the tough 412 yard par 4 thirteenth hole that plays to a fairway that is out of sight and over the hill from the tee. Chris caught some small bushes just off the top of the hill on the right and had no shot. Chris took 3 shots to get out, and ended up with a pick-up on the hole. The good shot making and putting continued for Chris on the final 6 holes in which he was just 2 over par. Chris' total of 38 points or 2 under par net was good for a 2 point win over J. Law. Rob Parsi shot a nice gross score of 77 and took third position in the Net Division A with 34 points. In the Net Division B competition, Chad Fisher had one of his best performances of the season. Chad was terrific on the opening nice with 4 net eagles and a total of 20 points. Chad had 3 more net eagles on the closing nine for a total of 38 points. Good for an easy 3 point win over: Paul Kudarauskas, Chris Jones, and Bud McGrath.
Trull Brook GC was in excellent condition for the Friday, October 7 make up date for a postponed event from September. The greens were smooth and unbelievably fast for a public course. The weather was fabulous with a warm breeze for early October and plenty of sunshine. Nearly all the players had trouble on the quick greens, and 3 - putts were abundant. Jeff Mucciarone took the low gross victory by 1 shot with a 79 over Glenn Watson and Fred Mather. Nate Liskov was the Net Division winner with a 2 over par net score of 74.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Rhode Island for the Wednesday, October 5th event at Montaup. It was brilliantly sunny and cool for the start of this event, and the blustery breeze had a strong effect on the scoring at this scenic, exposed course on Mt. Hope Bay. Brian Boyle has been playing well, and on his first trip over this nice layout was up to the challenge. Brian shot a fine 5 over par 76, which on a normal day without the stiff breezes would have been equivalent to at the least a 73. Tom Randele played well and was second low gross with a 79. In the Net Division A competition, Brian's net score of 71 was 1 better than Rhode Island veteran, Don Denuccio, and Tom Randele. In the Net Division B competition, long time Boston member, Jim Bethune, was the best with a 1 over par net score of 72.
The weather cooperated after a gloomy early Saturday morning as it turned into a fabulous weekend for golf with the temperature close to 70 degrees both days with plenty of sunshine for the 36-hole '11 Cape Cod Fall Classic at Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds and Quashnet Valley. Jeff Mucciarone has been playing some of his best golf of the season lately and took charge of this event right from the start. Jeff had 2 birdies on the opening nine a O.B.F.,. and was a 1 under par after nine holes. Jeff got it to 2 under par with a birdie on the 520 yard par 5 tenth hole, and after a bogey on 14 got that back right away with a birdie on the 185 yard par 3 fifteenth. Jeff had pars on 16 & 17 to stay at 2 under par, but finished with a bogey on the 560 yard par 5 finishing hole for a superb 1 under score of 70. Rick Lewis had some problems with the short putts, but was not too far behind with a 4 over par score of 74. Brian Boyle, a co-defending low gross champion with Rick Lewis from last year, was 7 behind Jeff M. with a 77. Sunday at Quashnet Valley was also a fine day and the greens were in great condition and nearly as fast as Saturday at O.B.F. Jeff M had to match or beat Rick Lewis to take the low gross title. Quashnet Valley is a tighter course and is rated as a tougher course than O.B.F. and this held true for the most part. Jeff's 5 over total of 77 was matched by Rick Lewis who never could get the putter to work properly and the low gross victory went to Jeff M. The best score of the day was a fabulous 3 birdie round by Rey LeMaine for a fine 4 over par 76. Rey played the final 17 holes in just 2 over par after starting the round with a double bogey 7 on the lengthy 590 yard par 5. In the Net Division A competition, Rey started Sunday's final round 10 strokes behind Peter Ross who was on fire at O.B.F. shooting an a superb 79. Also playing well on Saturday were: Adam Paone with a gross 78, and Dave Lee with an 83. Adam and Dave both had 4 under net scores on the day. Alex Lyon was also a contender with a net 68. Rey's net 63 on Sunday vaulted him into a tie for the Net Championship with Alex Lyon who was the only other contender that held steady on Sunday.
.B.A.G.S. traveled to Andover CC for the Wednesday, September 28th event. The streak of fabulous September weather continued for this event. It was much like a mid-summer day with the temperature close to 80 degrees. Rob Parsi started off with a triple bogey 7 on the 408 yard par 4 starting hole and after a par on the second, got 2 of those strokes back with back to back birdies on 3 & 4. Rob finished the opening nine at 3 over par 39. Rob played extremely well on the closing nine with 2 bogeys, 1 birdie, and all the rest pars for a 4 over par total of 76. Johnathan Law, last year's winner here and Jeff Mucciarone were 2 strokes behind with 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Wayne Morrison played some really fine golf. Wayne was steady on the opening nine with a 5 over par gross score of 41 good for 17 stableford points or 1 over par net. Wayne was particularly good on the closing nine with strong score of 2 over par 38 good for 19 points. Wayne's total of 36 points was 1 better than J. Law and Rob Parsi. In the Net Division B competition, Russ D'Auria had his best result of the season. Russ hadn't shot below 90 this season in a B.A.G.S.' event and had seen his handicap index go higher. On this day, Russ got off to an excellent start by playing the opening nine holes is just 4 over par gross good for an impressive 23 stableford points or 5 under par net. Russ had his only disaster hole on the straight away 443 yard par 5 tenth with a triple bogey. After that, however, Russ got back on track and recorded 14 points on the remaining 8 holes for a total of 37 points. There was a log jam in second place with Jim Kelly, Bob Hudd, and Dick Weiner all in a tie with 1 over par net scores of 73.
It turned really mild for the Monday, September, 26th event at Pawtucket CC. Even for the 8:30 start, it was well into the 70's with lots of sunshine. This 109 year old course is in the top 3 we play all year for course conditions. The greens here are fabulous, as smooth as the finest carpets, and the fairways and tees are beyond any kind of reproach. The course was set up as tough as it could be with the tees all the way back on a 6500 yard course that plays long with only 1 par 5. The tough rough made missed fairways no bargain, and hole positions on the these extremely quick greens made any two putt seem a challenge. Jeff Mucciarone was coming off a strong performance on the weekend at Glen Ellen, and he stayed red hot for this event. Jeff shot a superb 4 under 31 on the second nine holes with 3 birdies, and was in at 1 over par 70 for the round for a convincing 5 shot win over Brian Boyle who played some great golf of his own with a very nice score of 75. In the Net Division A competition, Jeff's net score of even par 69 ended up just beating Brian B., who was in at net 70. In the Net Division B competition from the shorter White tees, Rhode Island member, Drew Keane was hot all day and needed to be as his net score of 4 under par 65 was just enough to beat RI veteran, Hank Rustigian.
The great early Fall gold weather continued for the Saturday, September 24th event at Glen Ellen. It turned nice and warm for this event after some heavy early morning rain, and the course was in quite good shape with excellent greens. The members all agreed that B.A.G.S. should hold more than one event a year at this friendly layout. Jeff Mucciarone took charge of this event with 3 birdies in the first 10 holes to get to 3 under par. Jeff had 1 more birdie coming and finished with a superb 3 under par score of 69. Ivan Heller, a former High School golf squad teammate of Jeff's, never got closer than within 2 strokes of Jeff at any point, and finished in second place with a very nice 4 over par score of 76. Jeff M. also won the Net Division first prize. Bob Steward also played extremely well and was firmly in second place 3 ahead of Mark DelVecchio and Ivan H.
It was yet another in a line of superb days for golf for Wednesday, September 21 event at Triggs Memorial. This was a warm and sunny summer like day for the first day of Autumn. Brian Boyle is tough to beat when he's at his best, and this was one of those good days for Brian. Brian was just 1 over par through the tough opening section of the course. Brian went for the green in two on the dogleg right par 5 sixth hole and hit the green with his second shot and two -putted for birdie to get back to even par. Brian also had a nice birdie on the 341 yard par eighth hole. Brian made a double bogey 6 on the ninth hole after missing the green just to the right and after miss-hitting a chip shot from the tough rough, finally got on the green in 4 and two putted and finished the opening nine in 1 over par 36. Brian pared the first three holes on the second nine before making a nice birdie putt on the uphill 462 yard par 5 thirteenth hole after pulled tee shot. Brian made a bogey on the downhill par 3 fourteenth, and a par on the par 5 fifteenth to stay at 1 over par. Brian made a nice putt for birdie on the dogleg left 320 yard par 4 sixteenth, and finished the round in style with pars on 17 & 18 for an even par round of 72 and another listing in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for an even par or better score in a B.A.G.S.' event. Glenn Maillet played well again and took second low gross with a 77. In the Net Division A competition, Brian's net score of 5 under par 67 was 3 better than Glenn M. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member Kevin Mulligan blew away the field with 42 stableford points.
Norfolk GC was in excellent condition for the Monday, September 19 event. The greens here are equal to or better than any other course we play all year. The fairways and tees are also manicured to perfection. Fred Mather and Jeff Mucciarone were both in with 78's to tie for first place in the low gross competition. In the Net Division competition, Ted Van Sickle has struggled somewhat this year, but he put it all together for this event with fine closing nine hole gross score of 42 good for an impressive 21 stableford points. Ted's total for the event was 38 points, or 2 under par net. Well done, Ted! Ron Axelrod, Chris Kreilkamp, and Dick Malo all tied for second place with net 71's.
The fine pattern of summer like weather continued for the Saturday, September, 17 event at Sandy Burr. After a cool morning, the afternoon temperature was well into the 70's. Jeff Mucciarone won his second event in succession with a fine 1 over par 73. Rick Lewis and Glenn Watson shared second place with 4 over par 76's. Glenn Watson posted 4 birdies in his round. In the Net Division A competition, Gary Schirmer and Glenn Watson finished in a tie for first with net scores of 1 under par 71. Gary finished in a strong fashion with pars on the closing three holes all for net birdies to catch Glenn. Lew Weitzman played well and finished in a tie for third with Jeff Mucciarone. In the Net Division B competition, Mike Nelson played some unbelievable golf. Mike had 4 gross pars on the opening nine for 3 net birdies and a net eagle good for 22 points. Mike played the first 4 holes on the second nine in just 1 over par gross for 14 more points. Mike finished the closing nine with another 22 points for a fabulous total of 44 or 8 under par net for easy victory. Buzz Speers played well and took second position with a net score of 71. Jim Doughty had his best finish of the year taking third with a 2 over par net score.
It was a very nice late summer day for the Wednesday, September, 14 event at Atkinson CC. The temperature was well into the 70's, and the weather was just perfect for golf. Wayne Morrison played some strong golf on this tight layout that rewards accurate shots and severely penalizes anything hit off line. Wayne came in with a gross score of 80, the best on the day from the Blue tee markers, coming in with a superb second nine score of 1 over par gross score of 37 and a total of 36 points. Just 1 behind in second place were Murray Welch and Glenn McIntyre who both played extremely well. In the Net Division B competition, Dan Chicoine was by far the best. Dan was just 7 over par gross after making a par on the 370 yard par 4 fifteenth. Dan doubled 16 & 17, but was in with a bogey on the 18th for a total of 39 stableford points. Ted Scholnick was well back in second place with 35 points. Dick Millen had his best finish in a while taking third spot.
After a very damp week, Saturday, September 10 turned out very nice for golf with sunny and warm weather. The course had some wet spots, but with preferred lies allowed in the fairways, play was not too adversely affected. Jeff Mucciarone played some steady golf on the opening nine and was just 1 over par 35. Jeff played the second nine in 3 over par for a fine score of 74. Bob Drury was at 3 over par after nine holes, and nearly caught Jeff by playing the second nine in just 2 over par for a 75. In the Net Division A competition, there was a 5 way tie at the top. Ron Violette, Kaz Noda, Bob Drury, John Gibson, and Rick Sprague all came in with 1 over par net scores of 71. In the Net Division B competition, Chris Jones was the man, Chris shot a blazing gross score of 4 over par 38 on the opening nine for an almost unheard of, in the history of B.A.G.S.' competition, total of 26 stableford points. With a gross par on par 5 eleventh for a net eagle Chris got to an astounding 12 under par net. Chris came back to earth somewhat with double bogeys on 16 & 18, but still finished with an amazing 43 stableford points or 7 under par net. Well done, Chris! Well back in second place with 33 points was Paul Kudarauskas.
B.A.G.S. made its third and final visit to Atlantic CC for the Sunday, September, 4 event. It was warm with the temperature into the 80's, and a steady warm breeze affected scoring. Low ball hitter, Rick Lewis, was perhaps least affected by the steady breezes and with a strong birdie par finish, Rick took the low gross title with a very nice 3 over par score of 75. Jeff Mucciarone was 1 behind with a 76 to take second place by 1 over Bob Drury. In the Net Division A competition, Mike McAllister was easily the best. Mike started off with birdies on the first two holes and shot 3 over par gross on the opening nine for a total of 21 stableford points or 3 under par net. Mike was not quite as sharp on the second nine, but still had a nice birdie on the 525 yard par 5 fifteenth, and finished with a par on the 409 yard par finishing hole which played into the wind. Mike's total of 39 points was 3 better than Bob Drury and Rick Lewis, who tied for second place. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Scholnick got his second win in succession, and again in a decisive manner. Ted had 3 net birdies and a net eagle on the opening nine good for 22 stableford points off a gross score of 42. Ted was equally good on the second nine with another gross score of 42 and a massive total of 43 stableford points. Mike Nelson and Mike Deverix played some superb golf of their own, and would have been co-winners on any other day with 41 points each.
The Sunday, August 28 event at South Shore had to be postponed because the of remnants of hurricane Irene that blew through on Sunday. The make up date will be on the last weekend of daylight savings. November 5 or 6. We will choose the better weekend day for the event. The storm was long gone by the time of the Wednesday event at Indian Pond CC which was played on an absolutely beautiful day for golf. The course was in its usual fine condition with some of the best greens we play on all year. Jeff Mucciarone was just 3 over par through 16 holes, and won for third consecutive time with a fine 5 over total of 77. Bob Drury was in with 3 birdies on the day, and took second spot with a 79. In the Net Division A competition, Ivan Heller and Rey LeMaine both played exceptionally well and tied for first position with 2 under par net scores of 70. Rey shot a very fine gross score of 80, and Ivan lit up the second nine with an even par gross score of 36 good an impressive total of 20 stableford points or 2 under par net. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Scholnick was the man. Ted got on one of those streaks where he could do no wrong. Ted shot a gross score of 43 on the opening nine good for 21 stableford points. Ted was nearly as good on the second nine with 4 net birdies for another 20 points. Another indication of how dominating a performance this was by Ted was evidenced by the fact that no one else in the Net Division B field scored more than 33 stableford points and Ted won by 6 points.
Some afternoon thunderstorms moved in and caused a delay in play for the Thursday, August 25 event at Highfields. The storms moved out, and after about a 30 minute delay, play continued. Jeff Mucciarone won the low gross title with a fine 4 over par score of 76. Jeff won this event on the second nine holes with 2 birdies and an even par score of 36. Pete Black also played well on the second nine with a 2 over par score of 38. Peter took second in the low gross with a 79. In the Net Division A competition, Rhode Island member, Ray Hodges, was the best. Ray's 41 stableford points or 5 under par net, was good for an easy 3 stroke win over the trio of: Ron Violette, Peter Black, and Al Latour. In the Net Division B competition, another Rhode Island member, Joe Capone, played extremely well and was in with 41 points to win by 2 points over Pete Thompson and Mike Perryman.
The 23rd annual Society Championship was played on the weekend of August 20-21 at Olde Scotland Links. The humidity level was up, and storms were all around the area on Saturday, but amazingly, none came close enough to have any effect on play. Jeff Mucciarone was going for his 4th consecutive B.A.G.S.' Championship and he did nothing to hurt his chances on Saturday. Jeff started off hot with birdies on the first 2 holes and played the rest of the nine in even par for a 34. Jeff was still at 2 under par before making his first bogey of the day on the long 235 yard par 3 thirteenth. Jeff made par on 14, and then made a nice birdie on the number 1 stroke hole, the 386 yard par 4 fifteenth. Jeff finished as hot as he started playing the last 4 holes in 3 under par for a superb 4 under 68. This is the lowest score at this course since B.A.G.S. first starting playing here in 1998. Johnathan Law, also a past champion, was also playing well, and was at 1 under par after finishing the 17th hole. Johnathan made a bogey on 18, and finished at even par 72. The next closest competitor was Brian Boyle in at 78. There was no threat of storms on Sunday, but the wind picked up considerably, and for the main part, the scores were not as good as they were on Saturday. Jeff was still on his game and with the help of 3 birdies, played the first 11 holes in 1 under par. Jeff made his only double bogey on the weekend on the short 383 yard par 4 fourteenth when his approach shot with a wedge drifted left and rolled into the water hazard. Jeff played the remaining 4 holes in even par for a 74. Jeff's 36 hole total of 142 matched the B.A.G.S.' record for this event. Johnathan didn't play as well on Sunday, but no else made a significant charge, and Johnathan took second place by 5 strokes over Rick Lewis. In the Net Division A competition, Jeff M. won by the narrowest of margins over Gary Schirmer and Adam Paone. Gary played consistently well both days and had gross scores of 81-83. Adam, last year's Net Division B champion, has moved up to Net Division A this year, and made a strong charge on Sunday, especially on the opening nine. Adam shot a fabulous 1 under par gross score on Sunday on the first nine for a hefty total of 24 points. Adam couldn't maintain that level of play on the second nine, but still had 15 points to get the tie for second with Gary S, 1 stroke behind Jeff M.. Bob Steward also played well on the weekend with a 1 under par net total and finished in a tie for 5th with Johnathan Law. In the Net Division B competition, Joe Regan put it all together. Joe was a 2 stroke leader after Saturday's round with an impressive total of 39 stableford points or 3 under par net despite making a triple bogey 7 on the first hole. Mike Robinson was in second with 37 points and Lifetime member, Pete Thompson, the 5 time B.A.G.S.' Order of Merit winner, was in third with 36 points. On Sunday, Joe was 1 stroke better on the first hole with a double bogey 6 for 1 point, but finished the opening nine 1 point worse than Saturday. Joe closed well on the second nine and was 2 strokes better than on Saturday. Joe's 22 points on the second nine gave him 40 for the day and a 2 point win in the Championship. Pete Thompson shot 5 strokes better on Sunday with a gross score 82 good for 41 points to take second place. Last year's Net Division A winner, Dan Chicoine, hasn't played as well this year and slipped back into Net B. However, Dan found some of his old form on Sunday with a gross score of 82 good for 39 points, and he moved from the middle of the pack after Saturday's round into third place overall. Mike Robinson, who was in second place after round 1, shot 4 over par net 76 on Sunday, and fell back into fourth position.
The fine string of great weather continued for the Wednesday, August 17 event at Poquoy Brook. It was in the low 80's with low humidity and light breezes and the course was in great shape. Jeff Mucciarone played the first 12 holes in just 2 over par, and after going to 4 over par on holes 13 -17, finished with a nice birdie on the 481 yard par 5 finishing hole after hitting the green with his second shot from about 215 yards out, on the sharp dogleg left. Jeff's score of 3 over par 75 was good for a 4 shot win over Leigh MacKay who was back in action for the first time this season. Leigh was right there with Jeff through 15 holes, but a pushed tee shot on the long 461 yard par 4 sixteenth lead to a lost ball, and Leigh ended up with a double bogey 6. In the Net Division A competition, Rey LeMaine played some great golf. Rey shot a gross score of 82, and his total of 36 stableford points or even par net, was good enough for a 1 point win over Gary Schirmer and Bob Steward. In the Net Division B competition, Andrew Leonard and Ted Scholnick were in a tie for first place with 38 stableford points or 2 under par net. Ted played extremely well on the opening nine with 2 gross birdies for net eagles and a total of 21 stableford points. Andrew was 3 points behind after nine holes, but really got going on the second nine with 6 gross pars and 20 points total. Dick Malo played well again, and took third position with a 1 under net score of 71.
It was a perfect day for golf for the Saturday, August 13 event at Acushnet River Valley. It was into the 80's and the humidity was moderate. There were some really fine scores posted. Rick Lewis played a fabulous round of golf. Rick was coming off a nice win in the previous event at Norton, and he played the first 12 holes at Acushnet R. V. in 2 under par with 4 birdies. After a bogey on the long 473 yard par 4 thirteenth that played into the wind, Rick made birdies on 2 of the next 4 holes for an unbelievable total of 6 birdies on the day, and was at 3 under par coming to 18. The hole location on the 407 yard par 4 finishing hole was tucked on the right side of the green directly behind the front bunker, the toughest hole location on the green. There were no birdies on this hole by anyone. Rick made a bogey 5 here, but still finished with a superb 2 under par score of 70. This was the second best score on this course in a B.A.G.S.' event. The B.A.G.S.' record holder at ARV, Jeff Mucciarone, was in the field, and he played some great golf of his own. Jeff had a couple of birdies, and was solidly in second place with an even par score of 72. Bob Drury was even par after 9 holes, but dropped back to third position with 41 on the second nine. In the Net Division A competition, Rick's net score of 66 was 5 better than Rey LeMaine, who had beaten Rick handily in the Net at River Bend, and Jeff M. In the Net Division B competition from the shorter Blue tee markers, Buzz Speers was definitely the man. Buzz was only 3 over gross after 13 holes. Buzz made a couple of nice pars on 15 & 16, and finished with bogeys on 17 & 18 for a very fine score of 78. Buzz had 6 net birdies on the day and a net eagle for a massive total of 42 stableford points. Aisling Doyle was back in action for the first time this year, and she finished in a tie for second with Bob Steward and Ken Rybczyk with 2 under par net scores.
The heavy rain ended by early morning and River Bend was in very decent condition for the Wednesday, August 10 event. Rick Lewis played the first 17 holes in only 3 over par. The 576 par 5 eighteenth requires a straight drive that can't drift to the right or it is lost in the hazard area on that side. Rick was trying too hard to avoid that and hit his only really poor tee shot on the day, a low pull that hit a cart path and hopped over a hazard area toward the 10th green on the left. Rick played out to the left down the tenth fairway and managed to finally get it to within 3 feet of the hole in 5 shots. Rick missed this short putt and ended up with a double bogey 7 on the hole and finished with a 5 over par 76. The only good thing was that this did not cause Rick to lose the low gross win as his closest challenger, Rey LeMaine, came up just 1 stroke behind. Rey made a unbelievable closing charge on the more difficult second nine of this course. Rey shot 6 over on the more open and easier opening nine. Rey must have had something very stimulating at the turn because he was a completely different player starting on 10. Rey made birdies on both 10 & 11, and a par on 12. After bogeys on 13, 14, & 15, Rey made his third birdie on the nine with a 4 on the long 576 yard par 5 sixteenth. Rey finished well with pars on 17 & 18 for an even par second nine score of 36. In the Net Division A competition, Rey with the help of an awsome 24 stableford points on the closing nine ended up 3 points better than: Peter Black, Glenn McIntyre, and Dave Gamache. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Scholnick made a closing charge of his own. Ted had decent score on the easier opening nine with 17 stableford points. On the second nine, Ted was a confident competitor. Ted had gross pars on 5 of the holes good for 4 net birdies, and with 2 strokes on the long sixteenth, his par was good for net eagle. Ted shot a superb gross score of 41 good for an impressive total of 23 stableford points. Ted's total of 40 points was good for a 1 point win over Murray Welch, who won his previous event at Halifax. Phil Carlino was back in action for the first time this year, and took third position with 38 points.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Norton CC for the Thursday, August 4 event. This was our third event in the last 6 days. It was a perfect day for mid-summer golf with the temperature in the mid-80's and moderate humidity. The course is not long from the back tees at 6546 yards, but the course is very tight and the straight hitter will win out over the long hitter here every time. Straight hitting Rick Lewis hit a lot of greens, but just couldn't get the numerous birdie putts to drop on this demanding layout. Rick had 4 birdie putts that nearly went in. On the 410 yard par 4 eighth, Rick hit a pushed tee shot into the right trees and the lie was so poor he couldn't even get back to the fairway. Rick made his only double bogey on the day here. Rick just missed another birdie putt on 9 and he played the opening nine in 3 over par 39. Rick played the second nine in just in just 3 over par for a nice 6 over score of 77. Lew Weitzman played a mediocre opening nine with a 7 over par score of 43. Lew changed things around on the second nine. Three pars in a row starting off the second nine holes got the confidence up, and Lew finished this nine with at just 1 over par 37 for an 80 and second place in the low gross. Lew played the 4 par three's in 2 under par on the day, and had nearest to the hole on 3 out 4. In the Net Division A competition, Lew's total of 39 stableford points was good for an easy 3 point win over John Phillips and Rick L. In the Net Division B competition, Dick Malo was definitely the man. Dick shot 1 under par net 70 despite an opening hole triple bogey for 0 points. The next best score was a net 74 by B.A.G.S.' veteran of 20+ years, Allan Sutfin.
Halifax CC was in nice condition for the Monday afternoon, August 1 event. It was warm and muggy for the start of the event, but clouds moved in during the afternoon and blocked the sun enough to cool things off. This nice layout has some tough par 4's ranging from over 415 yards to 433 yards from the Blue tees (6708 yards) giving the course a toughness to make up for several short par 4's. The greens were very consistent and once a putt is started on line it stays there right to the hole. Jeff Mucciarone, the B.A.G.S.' course record holder with his great score of 3 under par last year was not up to that this time, but his 5 over score of 77 was good enough to beat Rhode Island veteran member, Dave Gamache, by 1 stroke. Chris Adamo and Charlie Lent also played well and tied for third with 79's. In the Net Division A competition, the newest member of B.A.G.S., Murray Welch, who joined the Society the night before the event, played a superb round. Murray never made worse than bogey on any hole, had 10 pars and shot a very nice gross score of 81. Murray finished in a tie for first with the above mentioned Dave Gamache with 4 under net scores of 68. Chris Adamo took third spot with a 71. Another new member, John Kelley, also in his first event finished in a tie for 4th with Charlie Lent. In the Net Division B competition, Joe Garofoli had his best result in his first full season as a B.A.G.S.' member. Joe had 6 net birdies and 1 net eagle and his total of 41 stableford points or 5 under par net was good for a 1 point win over Mike Perryman. Alex Willis also played well, and took third position with a 35 points or 1 over par net.
B.A.G.S. made its second consecutive weekend trip north into southern New Hampshire for the Saturday, July 30 event at Green Meadow GC. It was a warm day, but the steady breezes made it a pleasant day for golf. The " Jungle" course is a very friendly layout, and very good value for the modest weekend course fees being charged. The course has good size landing areas for tee shots. It's strongest challenge is the length at over 6900 from the furthest back tees. Jeff Mucciarone, who just recently played two rounds in the Ouimet Invitational Tournament, made it look incredibly easy for the first 13 holes, Jeff got it to 4 under par after chipping onto the 556 yard par 5 thirteenth from just in front of the green and making about 10 footer for birdie. Jeff three-putted on 14 for bogey and made another bogey on 16 from a buried lie in the left bunker. Jeff made a par on the 170 yard par 3 sixteenth and made a nice 1 putt par on the 460 yard par 4 seventeenth from about 15 feet to stay at 2 under. Jeff's tee shot on the 530 yard par 5 finishing hole was a strong pull to the left that caught the trees on the left and dropped maybe 100 yards from the tee. Jeff hit a fine second shot to within 160 yards of the green. The green is at the top of a hill and Jeff misjudged his third and ended toward the back of the large green 30 feet above the hole. Jeff's speed and distance control on his putts had been great all day. However, this time Jeff came up well short and ended up with a bogey 6. Jeff's superb score of 1 under par 71 is the new B.A.G.S.' scoring record at this course. Doug Bray was on fire for the first 13 holes also, and was at even par before making a bogey on 14. Johnathan Law was right there also, playing the first 14 holes 1 over par. Doug and Johnathan finished the day with 3 over par scores of 75, tying for second place. In the Net Division A competition, Doug and Jeff M. shared first place with 3 under par net scores. Johnathan took third position. In the Net Division B competition from the shorter White tee markers, New Hampshire man Dan Chicoine, used his extensive local knowledge of this course to his advantage. Dan shot a very fine opening nine gross score of 40 good for 20 stableford points to take a 2 point lead over Tony Carmona. Dan made 20 more points on the second nine while Tony shot a 40 of his own to make 21 points to close the margin to just 1 point at the finish. Bill Feeney liked the course and played quite well with a net 70 to get a tie for third with another New Hampshire resident, Ray Fearnley.
It was a perfect day for golf for the Wednesday, July 27 event at LeBaron Hills. The temperature was in the mid-80's with low humidity for the afternoon shotgun start. The course was in great shape and the members all enjoyed the stylish layout. Rick Lewis played his first 6 holes in four over par then went on a nice streak, playing the next 5 in one under par. Rick finished his final 4 holes in even par for a fine 3 over par score of 75 and an easy win. In the Net Division A competition, Chris Kreilkamp and Glenn McIntyre both played some superb golf and gained a tie with Rick Lewis for first place with net scores of 68. Bob Steward also played well and took fourth net with a 69. In the Net Division B competition, Don Cybulski was the man. Despite having 2 zero point holes, Don was able to accumulate a massive total of 44 stableford points with the help a net albatross, Don birdied 1 of his double stroke holes, two net eagles, and 8 net birdies. Well done, Don! Tom Bryant finally got into the action this year and played well. Tom shot 1 under par net and finished in a tie for second with Rhode Island member, Steve Medeiros.
The heat was on in full measure for the Saturday, July 23 event at Passaconaway. It got to around 95 degrees under a cloudless sky, however, the humidity wasn't too bad and the ball flew long. The course was in its usual fine shape and the course kept plenty of cold drinking water out. Jay Leonard hasn't played all lot of events this year, but each time he has, he's been a winner. Jay played the longish opening nine measured at around 3500 yards in 1 under par 34 with a birdie on the 180 yard par 3 eighth and all the rest pars. Jay was still at 1 under par after 13. Jay's tee shot on the 521 yard par 5 fourteenth was lost in the hazard on the right, and Jay ended up making a double bogey. After pars on 15 & 16, Jay went to 3 over on the round with a bogey on the 385 yard par 4 seventeenth. Jay was only about 6 feet away for birdie on the 317 yard par 4 finishing hole, but the putt was off line and Jay finished with an easy par for a fine 2 over par score of 73. Jeff Mucciarone took second with a 77, and Bob Drury was in third with a 79. In the Net Division competition, John McGilley was the man. John shot a very fine gross score of 82, his best since an 83 here the previous year. John finished in fine fashion despite the heat, playing the last 6 holes in 1 over par gross. John's total of 40 stableford points or 4 under par net was good for a 1 point win over: John Korzun, Dave Lee, and Mark Jezowski.
B.A.G.S. made its first ever trip to Crestwood CC on Wednesday, July 20. This Geoff Cornish design from 1958, which is Dana Quigley's home club, was an absolute treat to play. The course is both challenging and fair and several members played extremely well. Tom Dromgoole hasn't been particularly active in last month or so, but he certainly didn't look rusty in this event. Tom had nothing worse than bogey on the card with 11 pars and the nice birdie on the 526 yard par 5 eighteenth for the winning score of 76. Jeff Mucciaone couldn't quite adjust to the greens after playing on Monday at Norfolk GC where the greens were so much quicker. Jeff, however, still got second place by himself with a 77. Rhode Island members, Al Ferretti and Rich Bracker shared third place with 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Al Ferretti was in at net 67 for the win. Gary Schirmer had zeros on two of his first 3 holes, but with the help of back to back birdies on 6 & 7 for net eagles and pars on 8 & 9 for net birdies, Gary was in the lead after nine holes. Gary still had it going after playing 10 - 15 in just 1 over par gross. Gary faltered on the next two holes with a three- putt 16 for a double for a net bogey and then made another double on the 150 yard par 3 seventeenth for zero points. Gary made a bogey on the 18th for net par, and took second place with a net score of 68. Richard Books was back in the action and played well and finished in a tie for third with: Tom Dromgoole and Ken Hallberg. In the Net Division B competition, Dick Malo put it all together. In an incredible performance, Dick only had 1 hole on which he made worse than 2 stableford points and had 7 net eagles. His gross score of 86 was his best in a B.A.G.S.' event in over 2 years. Dick's net score of 65 was 4 better than second place finisher, Don Cybulski.
Norfolk GC was in tremendous condition for the Monday, July 18 event. The greens were as good or better than any we play on all year and the fairways and tees were perfection. An overcast sky kept the morning cool and made for great playing conditions. Jeff Mucciarone was even par coming to the 185 yard par 3 ninth, but hit a pulled tee shot left of the green into a difficult position. Jeff ended up with a double bogey 5 and was at 2 over par 37 for the first time around this 9 hole course. Jeff shot even par on the second time around for a 72 for an easy win. Clyde Rowells liked the course and the pace of play with nearly all the groups finishing their rounds in 4 hours10 minutes or less. Clyde shot 1 over par the first time around and was right there until the end when he finished bogey, bogey for a fine 6 over par score of 76 and second place. Charlie Lent was back in the action for his long delayed first event of the season and took third with a 78. In the Net, Dick Millen had a good day with 19 points both times around and shared first place with the above mentioned Clyde R.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Braintree Municipal for the Saturday, July 18 event. It was a perfect mid-summer day for golf. The course was in good condition and there were several exceptional scores. Brian Boyle got off to great start with a birdie on the 350 yard par 4 opening hole and was back at even par after a bogey on the 185 yard par 3 fifth. Brian made birdie putts on 6 and 7 to get back to 2 under par. He got up and down for par on the par 5 eighth and two-putted on nine for a par to finish the opening nine with a superb 2 under par score of 34. Brian was hole high in two on the 510 yard par 5 tenth hole and chipped up near the hole for birdie to get to 3 under par. Brian hit his only poor tee shot on the day with a pushed shot that found the right hazard area on this tight 430 yard par 4. Brian got on in 4 and two-putted for a 6. After a par on the 188 yard par 3 twelfth, Brian got on the short 474 yard par 5 thirteenth in two shots and two-putted for his 5th birdie of the round. Brian made a nice par on the 430 yard par 4 fourteenth, made a bogey on 16 and finished with three straight pars for a 1 under par score of 71, and another spot in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for even par or better scores. Well done, Brian! Rick Lewis, after going to 7 over par after the eighth hole, didn't give up, and made a mad charge playing the last 10 holes in an amazing 4 under par with the help of 5 birdies on those holes to finish with a 75 for second place. Bob Drury, looking to make it three consecutive wins on this course for the season, hit the ball well but had 3 misses on putts under 3 feet to kill his chances. In the Net Division A competition, Brian B. was again the easy winner with a net score of 66. Another B.A.G.S.' veteran, Dennis Callahan, shot a very fine gross score of 82 on this tight course and took second place money with a excellent net score of 2 under par 70. Rick Lewis was all alone in third position having made 23 stableford points on the closing nine or 5 under par net. In the Net Division B competition, Bob Matheson had another fine day of scoring. Bob's total of 38 points or 2 under par net was good for a 3 point win over the trio of: John Cochran, Tony Carmona, and Ralph Faiola.
Olde Scotland Links was in nice condition for the Wednesday, July 13 event. The afternoon thunder and lightning storms held off until well after the event was completed. Andrew Wilson played some superb golf, and got his first low gross title of the season. Andrew started off with a double bogey 6 on the 433 yard par 4 opening hole and then played the rest of first nine in 2 under par with birdies on 4, 5, and 7 for an even par score of 36. Andrew kept it together on the closing nine with 1 bogey and all the rest pars for a 37, and a total of just 1 over par 73. This was a dominant performance for Andrew with his next closest competitor, Steve Ross, being 5 strokes behind. Andrew's net score of 65 was 2 better than '10 B.A.G.S.' Club Champions from this event site Net A champ - Dan Chicoine and Net B champ - Adam Paone who both seem to play particularly well here. Rob Rorke played well and took fourth position with a net score of 68.
It was yet another gorgeous day for golf for the Sunday, July 10 event at Atlantic CC. The light sea breeze kept the temperature several degrees cooler than inland and there was nary a cloud in the sky. The Championship tees were out for Gold tees at a full 6730 yards for the low gross and Net A competition. Bob Drury was the best on this challenging course set up with an 8 over par score of 80. Rick Lewis took second spot with an 81. In the Net Division A competition, the Cape's Bob Matheson was 1 point better than Bob D. with 34 stableford points. In the Net Division B competition from the Blue tees at around 6250 yards, Jeff Moore got his first ever win in a B.A.G.S.' event. Jeff had 2 net eagles on the day to offset 2 zero points holes and his 37 stableford points or 1 under par net was good enough for a 2 point victory over Paul McCurley. Dave Lee took third position with 34 points.
Marlborough CC was in excellent condition for the Tuesday, July 5 event. The greens were smooth and fast and the fairways were well groomed. Ed Schene played extremely well and came away with a 1 stroke victory over Jeff Mucciarone with a fine score of 4 over par 75. Ed Schene was at 1 under par net to get him third money. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member, George Benjamin, was the best. George just eked out the win by 1 point at 3 under par net over Mike Gilmore and Larry Brewster who both played quite well. Peter Elliott also played well and got fourth spot with an even par net score of 71..
It was yet another perfect day for golf for the Saturday, July 2 event at Sandy Burr. The temperature was into the mid-80's with only moderate humidity. The course was at its best with the greens smooth and quite fast. Rick Lewis was strong on the closing nine with an eagle on the short 465 yard par 5 eleventh and birdies on 16 and 17 for a 1 over par nine hole score of 37. Rick's 76 was 1 better than Chris Adamo who had his best low gross finish so far this year. Chris loved the greens and had only 27 putts total with the help of 9 one-putt greens. Wayne Morrison was back in the competition and took third spot with a very fine 79. In the Net Division A competition, the above mentioned Chris Adamo had 20 stableford points on both nines for 40 points or net 68, Chris got a net eagle for 4 points on the 522 yard par 5 seventeenth when he sunk a 13 footed for birdie to help seal the win. Rick L. and Wayne M. both tied for third position with net 71's. B.A.G.S. traveled to the beautiful Ledgemont CC for the Tuesday, June 28 event. The course was in its usual exceptional condition with lush fairways and smooth quick running greens. Rhode Island Division member Ken Lombardo was the best with a fine 6 over par 78. 2 behind in second place were: long hitting Paul Cantrell, Richard Tenby, and Jim Wardick. In the Net Division A competition, Ken Lombardo's net score of 67 was much the best. Bob Jarchow showed some excellent form at this event. Bob show a very fine gross score of 84, and took second position with a 1 under par net score of 71. In the Net Division B competition, RI members: Russ Auclair, Lou Izzi, and Dave Izzo all finished in a tie for first with 1 under par net scores. Boston member, Jack Farrell also played well and finished in 5th place with an even par net score of 72.
After an overcast start to the day, it cleared off and become quite warm for the Saturday, June 26 event at River Bend. The course was in good condition and the greens were smooth and quick. Jay Leonard was back in the competition and after a bogey on the opening hole, got a good break on the 500 yard par 5 second hole when his chip shot from out of the rough hit the flag stick and dropped into the hole for a birdie. Jay played the rest of the opening nine in 1 over par for a 36. Jay put away the competition on the more difficult and tighter second nine with another 1 over par nine hole score of 37 for a two over par total of 73. Jeff Mucciarone, looking for his third consecutive win, stayed even with Jay for 12 holes, and eventually finished 2 behind with a fine score of 75. In the Net Division A competition, Steve Doire was still in form after a superb performance in the recent team event. Steve shot a very nice 3 over par 38 on the opening nine good for 21 stableford points. Steve was nearly as good on the tighter second nine with 18 more points for a total of 39 or 3 under par net. Ron Jacques was even better on the more open first nine, and shot a 1 over par gross score of 37 for 22 points. Ron was still in there with a chance to win, but a after a good drive on the long 572 yard par 5 sixteenth, hit his second shot out of bounds to the right and finished the hole with a triple bogey. Ron made a nice par on the long 18th for three points and was in with 38 total for second place. Jay Leonard took third position with a 1 over par net score. In the Net Division B competition, Bill Feeney and Paul Kudarauskas were in the same foursome and the battled all the way to the end for the victory. Paul had the lead after a brilliant opening nine hole gross score of 2 over par 37 for 24 points. Bill was 5 back with 19. Bill, with 4 net birdies won the second nine by 5 points over Paul and they both finished with 38 points or 2 under par net. Adam Mueller played well again and took third position with an even par net score of 71.
After a beautiful Monday, it turned cool and damp for the Thursday, June 23 event at Scottish Highlands. B.A.G.S.' members were the only players out on the course in the morning, and this was a quick round with all players done in under 4.5 hours. Monday's winner at Waverly Oaks, Jeff Mucciarone made birdies on the first 2 holes and was at 2 under par after 10 holes after his third birdie on the day at 10. Jeff played the final 8 holes in 2 over for an even par score of 71. Only 1 other player in the field, Ron Jacques with a 79, broke 80. In the Net Division competition, Bob Hudd continued his recent splendid play and got a tie for first place with Ron J. with net 68.
B.A.G.S traveled to Waverly Oaks GC for the Monday, June 20 event. It was a spectacular day for golf with the temperature right around 80 with low humidity and a just a few puffy clouds. The course was in its usual very fine condition. Jeff Mucciarone got back to his winning ways with a fine even par score of 72. Jeff was hot at the start playing the first 16 holes in 2 under par with 3 birdies. Jeff hit the green on the 224 yard par 3 seventeenth but 3 putted for a bogey to go to 1 under. Jeff pushed his tee shot on the 375 yard par 4 eighteenth, and need to sink a putt just to save a bogey. Jeff's 72 was 4 better than Doug Bray who was red hot on the opening nine with a 1 under par 35. Lew Weitzman was in the hunt for second place at just 2 over par after getting up and down for a bogey on the 449 yard par 4 fifteenth. Lew played the final 3 holes in 3 over, and took third spot in the low gross with a 77. In the Net Division A competition, Lew was 3 better than Doug with a net score of 67. In the Net Division B competition, Larry Brewster was the best, Larry shot a superb gross score of 3 over par 39 on the opening nine for an almost unheard of 25 stableford points or 7 under par net. Larry cooled off somewhat with just 16 points on the slightly more difficult second nine, and just hung on for a 1 point victory over Bud McGrath and Ron Axelrod who both played extremely well. Bud shot a very fine gross score 85 and had 20 points on both nines as did Ron Axelrod who was in with a fine gross score of 84.
The annual Member-Member/Guest team event at Olde Scotland Links on Saturday, June 18 was a tightly contested affair for both low gross and low net divisions. The day was an absolutely gorgeous day for golf with the temperature into the low 80's and low humidity. The veteran team of Rick Lewis/Mark DelVecchio had 5 gross birdies to off set 3 bogies and a double bogey to finish in a tie for first place with first time entrants Bill Hutchins/Dave Vensel with identical 1 under par scores of 71. In the Net Competition another veteran team Tony Carmona/Mike Nelson ran into a hot team of brothers Steve Doire/Pete Doire. Mike Nelson was especially strong, but Tony C. came through with a big gross par on eighteen for 3 huge stableford points to get the team to 15 under par for the day. Steve Doire played some incredible golf on this day. He started off with 4 straight net eagles and finished the opening nine with a gross score of 37 on his own card. Steve didn't falter until the 17th when he was out of the hole with a triple bogey. Brother Pete bailed him out big time with his only used score the entire round, a gross birdie for 4 stableford points or net eagle. Steve got the par on 18 for 3 more points and the tie for first with Carmona/Nelson. 2 points behind in third with a fabulous 13 under score was the Glenn McIntyre/Paul McCurley team. Johnathan Law/Chris Jones team also played extremely well and took fourth with an 11 under par net score.
The Wednesday, June 15 event at Braintree Municipal was played on a perfect day for golf with the temperature in the upper 70's under a cloudless sky. Straight hitting Bob Drury really does play well here and proved that again in this event. Bob was at even par after 10 holes including a birdie on the 377 yard par 4 tenth. The only hole on this course that seems to give him trouble is the long 430 yard par 4 eleventh. Bob made a double bogey 6 this time, but got 1 of those back with a nice birdie on the 180 yard par three twelfth. Bob made bogeys on 13 & 14 to go to 3 over for the round. Bob played the final stretch of holes in 1 over par to finish at 4 over par 76 to easily win the low gross title. In the Net Division A competition, John Cochran was the best by 2 strokes over Bob D. John was in with a fine gross score of 84 and shot just 5 over par gross on the closing nine. Buzz Speers and Richard Tenby both played well and finished in a tie for third position. In the Net Division B competition, Bob Hudd blew away the field. Bob was on cruise control all day with drives in the fairways and putts for birdies. Bob shot just 1 over par gross on the opening nine for an astounding 24 stableford points on this tight layout. Bob cooled off somewhat on the second nine, but still shot a gross score of 6 over par 42 good for 20 more stableford points for 44 total or a net 64. Ralph Daniels and Ted Scholnick each figured they were sure winners on the way to look at the B.A.G.S.' scoreboard after coming off the 18th with fine 4 under par net scores of 68 rather than sharing second place.
It was cool and overcast for the Saturday, June 11 event at Acushnet River Valley breaking an extended streak of sunny weekend events. The showers and drizzle tapered off before the start of the event. Rick Lewis started off with 3 straight pars but made bogeys on 5 of the next 6 holes for an opening nine hole score of 41. After a par on 10, Rick made back to back birdies on 11 & 12 and this got his interest level back up. Rick made pars on holes 13- 16 with his birdie chip on 16 just hanging on the lip of the hole. Rick missed the green on the 185 yard par 3 seventeenth and made a bogey 4. After a fine tee shot on the 407 yard par 4 eighteenth, Rick hit a short iron from about 140 yards out to within 5 feet and made the putt for the only birdie on the day on 18 for a fine 3 over par score of 75. Tim Lepain and Adam Paone were well back in second with 80's. In the Net Division A competition, Adam Pane's 80, which was his best score in an event in over a year and half, was good for 40 stableford points. Adam was steady all day with gross 40's on both nines and he finished strongly with 3 straight pars. Rick Lewis was in second, 3 strokes behind with a 1 under par net score. Ron Jacques played well, and was in third position with a 1 over par net score. In the Net Division B competition, Trip Robinson got his first win of the season with a fine 3 under par net score of 69. Nate Liskov also played quite well and took second place with a 1 under par net score.
The streak of fine weather for the weekend events continued for the Sunday, June 5 event at Braintree. The event was played under a cloudless sky and a temperature well into the 70's with no humidity. Bob Drury got off to an excellent start, and was just 1 over par after 10 holes. Bob had his only bad hole on the day with a triple bogey 7 on the long, 430 yard par 4 eleventh. Bob quickly got back on track with pars on 12 & 13 and played the final 5 holes in 2 under par with birdies on 14 & 16 for another 37 and a total of 74 to get his first low gross victory of the season. Will Peishoff struggled on the opening nine with an 8 over par 44 but didn't give up. Will started the second nine with a birdie on the 510 yard par 5. Will gave that stroke back with a bogey on the tough 11th and after a par on 188 yard par 3 twelfth, Will made back to back birdies on 143 & 14 and finished with another birdie on 18 for an amazing score of 33 on the second nine for a total of 77 and second place. In the Net Division A competition, Bob Drury was the winner with a net 68. Ron Violette and Glenn McIntyre both played quite well and finished in a tie for second with 1 under par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, Matt Meyersohn opened with a birdie and played the first 10 holes in just 3 over par gross. After a birdie on the 172 yard par 3 twelfth hole, Matt was still just 3 over par gross. Matt played the final 6 holes in 6 over par for a fine gross score of 81. Matt's total of 40 stableford points or 4 under par net was just good enough to beat Paul Kudarauskas and Adam Mueller, who both played exceptionally well, by 1 point.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Shining Rock GC for the Thursday, June 2 event. After a night where a powerful tornado came close by the course, the day cleared out and was very breezy. This is a tight course with some forced carries over hazard areas and ravines and a good tee ball was required to a have a chance on a hole. Chris Kreilkamp, at his best, is very consistently straight off the tee and this paid off on this day. Chris shot a very fine 5 over par 40 on the opening nine. The second nine is longer in yardage with three par 5's, but the par four's are much easier with none over 372 in length and this is the nine to score on. Chris started off with consecutive birdies on the 370 yard par 4 tenth and the 372 yard par 4 eleventh. Chris made a nice par on the 188 yard par 3 twelfth, before making his only double bogey on the day at the 500 yard par 5 thirteenth. Chris played the rest of the holes; 14 -18 in just 2 over par for a 39. Chris's total of 79 was the only score in the field of over 70 players under 80.
The fabulous stretch of weather continued for the re-scheduled event at Indian Pond CC on Tuesday, May 31. It was a superb day for golf with the temperature in the mid-70's and low humidity. The course itself was in wonderful condition with smooth, fast, putting surfaces. Jeff Mucciarone holds the B.A.G.S.' course record here of 3 under par and always plays this course well. Jeff played the opening nine in 3 over par 39. Jeff got it down to just 2 over par after a birdie on the dogleg left 400 yard par 4 fifteenth after draining about a 20 footer. Jeff couldn't gain any momentum from the birdie and finished with 3 straight bogeys for a 77. Steve Ross, in the same group with Jeff, shot a superb 2 over par 38 on the second and took second low gross with a 79. In the Net Division A competition, Andrew Leonard had his best result of the season. Andrew played the opening nine holes in just 2 over gross for 23 big stableford points despite making a 0 on the 185 yard par 3 seventh. Andrew had 4 net eagles on the second nine to offset 2 zero point holes and finished with a fine gross score of 81 good for 41 points or 5 under par net. Steve Ross took second place with 40 points. Ron Violette was in third with an even par net score. In the Net Division B competition, John Sawyer went real low. John's opening was nothing extraordinary with 18 stableford points. John simply caught fire on the second nine. John opened with a par and then made a birdies and 11 & 12. After a bogey on the short par 3 thirteenth, John made a par on 14 and got his third birdie in 6 holes on the 380 yard par 4 fifteenth. This gave John an unbelievable total of 22 points in just 6 holes. John finished with 6 more points on the final 3 holes for 28 for nine holes and 46 points total and a place in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for 45 or more points in an event. John Cochran and Gary Schirmer both played some great golf and were in with 40 stableford points usually more than enough to win an event and were in a tie for second.
B.A.G.S. traveled north to Southern New Hampshire for the first of two events at Passaconaway. The fine streak of good weekend weather continued for the Sunday, May 29 date with a warm summer like day. Jay Leonard was back in the field after quite a long absence from B.A.G.S.' events and he again showed that he can dominate any field even at the 60+ years mark Jay played the long 3570 yard opening nine in even par 35 with the help of opening birdies on 1&2. Jay was nearly as good on the second nine with just 2 bogeys, 1 birdie on the 361 yard par 4 fifteenth, and all the rest pars for 37 and 1 over par total of 72. Jeff Mucciarone closed well with 3 birdies in his last 5 holes, but was still 3 behind Jay, who played in the same group with Jeff, with a 75. Brian Boyle finished both nine's with birdies and was in third position with a 76. Steve Caputo came out of hibernation for his first event of the season, and took fourth with a fine 77 despite making a double on his opening hole. In the Net Division A competition, Jay Leonard and Brian Boyle tied for first with 3 under par net scores. Dennis Callahan who was also waiting for summertime golf weather and was in his initial event of the season, didn't seem to have too much rust to knock off, and took third position with a 1 under par net score. In the Net Division B competition from the shorter white tees, there was a three way tie for first place. Dave Lee, Paul McCurley, and Tony Carmona all played some excellent golf to finish with 1 under par net scores. Paul McCurley had a tremendous closing charge with net eagles on the final four holes to catch Tony and Dave.
The fine weather pattern continued for the Wednesday, May 25 event at Brookmeadow GC. It was a splendid day for golf with plenty of sunshine and a temperature into the low 70's. New member this year, Rob Parsi, got his first low gross win with a fine 3 over par 75. Rob built his on the opening nine with a superb 9 hole score of even par 36. Rob's two closest competitors, Ivan Heller and Jeff Mucciarone, were 3 strokes back with 78's. In the Net Division competition, DonCybulski was very much on his game. Don made the turn with a decent total of 17 stableford points or 1 over par net. Starting on the tenth, Don caught fire. Don made 4 consecutive 4's good for 12 stableford points and suddenly he was 3 under par net for the round. After a net par on the fourteen, Don made gross pars on the long par 3 fifteenth and the long par 5 sixteenth both for net eagles and 6 more points. Don finished with a net par and a net bogey good for 3 more points and an impressive total of 41. Rob Parsi took second net with 38 points and Kaz Noda was in third position with 37 points.
It was another fine weekend day for golf for the Saturday, May 21 event at South Shore CC. Under a cloudless sky the temperature was well into the 70's on this picture perfect day. Jeff Mucciarone got back in the winner's circle with a fine performance. Jeff had two birdies on the opening nine and made the turn at 1 over par 37. Jeff made bogeys on 3 of the next 4 holes to go to 4 over on the round. After a par on fourteen, Jeff made a nice birdie on the long 570 yard par 5 fifteenth and pared in for a 3 over 75. Johnathan Law took second with a 77 with the help of a superb pitch shot from the tall grass on the mounds to right of the 18th green to within 3 feet for the birdie 4. Jim Eldredge, Rick Lewis, and Doug Bray finished in a tie for third with 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Jim Eldredge, the 95th member to join B.A.G.S. back in early 1990, now in his 21st year of B.A.G.S.' competition, got the victory with an excellent 1 under par net score of 71. Another veteran, now in his 16th B.A.G.S.' season, Doug Bray continued his solid play and took second position with an even par net score. High School golfer, Dan Kearney in just his first event, shot a very fine gross score of 80, and was in a tie for third with Jeff Mucciarone with a net score of 73. In the Net Division B competition, Paul McCurley had by far his best result of the season. Paul has struggled in his recent appearances, but he put it together at this event on the second nine. Paul shot a 47 gross on the opening nine for a somewhat mediocre 16 points. However, on the second nine Paul had 4 net birdies and shot a gross 43 good for a great 20 points total. Paul's 36 points was 1 better than the Cape's Bob Matheson who also played well. John Cochran finished just 1 point behind in third when his birdie putt on 18 came up a fraction short of the hole.
It turned cool and raw for the Monday, May 16 event at Spring Valley CC. Some drizzle, a brief rain shower, and a cool low-50's temperature made it a tough day for golf. The course itself was in pristine condition. The two most recent winners of events, Doug Bray and Luc Schuster, battled until the end at this one. Luc and Doug finished in a tie for first with very fine 6 over par scores of 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Gary Grogan played some excellent golf, and got his first win of the year. Gary had 7 pars on the day and a nice birdie on the 350 yard par 4 fifteenth hole, and shot a gross score of 9 over par 81. Gary's net score of 70 was just enough to beat the above mentioned Doug Bray who was playing in the same group as Gary. In the Net Division B competition, Mike Gilmore played exceptionally well, and was an easy winner on this raw day with an even par net score of 72.
It was a perfect day for golf for the Saturday, May 14 event at River Bend CC. It turned mild for most of the day with the afternoon temperature into the 70's after a cloudy start. Luc Schuster, in his first B.A.G.S.' event and back playing again after recovering from a broken collar bone in a skiing accident, showed that he's the man to beat anytime he tees it up in a B.A.G.S.' event. Long and accurate off the tee and capable of reaching any of the par 5's we play in two shots, Luc is a solid 1 handicapper. Luc played the opening nine at River Bend in just 1 over par. Luc had his only double bogey on the day at 207 yard par 3 fourteenth to go to 3 over par for the round. Luc made bogey on two of the next three holes to go to 5 over par, but made a nice birdie on the long 576 yard finishing hole to come in with a fine 4 over par 75. Johnathan Law, playing in the same group with Luc, also made a birdie on the 18th and took second place by 1 shot with a 77. Doug Bray, the winner of the previous event at Metacomet, took third with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Doug was two shots better than Luc with an even par net score of 71. Johnathan Law and Brian Boyle shared third position. In the Net Division B competition, Gary Schirmer was the best by 1 point over Alex Willis with a 2 over par net score. Gary came on strong on the more difficult second nine with a gross score of 42 good for 19 stableford points.
An off shore storm system threw in clouds, cool breezes, and a light rain for the Tuesday, May 10 event at Metacomet after nice day the previous day at Sky Meadow. Metacomet CC is an old style Don Ross course situated right on Narragansett Bay, and would have been a joy to play on a better day. The ability to putt and chip on these hard and fast greens determines your score more than any other factor. Doug Bray was simply phenomenal around the greens. Doug had a miraculous save after going over the green and into the hay on the 180 - yard par 3 tenth and then chipping to the green which was sloping the other way to within 18 feet and then making the putt for par. This was followed by a par save on the 362 yard par 4 eleventh from about 20 feet with a right to left breaker. Doug made a nice birdie putt from about 10 feet on the 400 yard par 4 seventeen to get it to just 7 over on the day. Doug failed to get up and down on 18 and finished with an 8 over par 78. Jeff Mucciarone took second with an 80 on his first trip over the course. In the Net Division B competition, Doug and RI veteran, Dick Burt, finished in a tie for first with fine 1 over par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, Larry Brewster, who has struggled so far this year, had his best outing with a tie for first place with RI members: Frank Veto, and John Ventura.
B.A.G.S returned to Sky Meadow CC for the Monday, May 9 event after an absence of 15 years. It was a perfect early May day for golf after a cool morning with the afternoon temperature in the high 60's and brilliant sunshine for most of the afternoon. This course is both beautiful and challenging and was in great condition for the event.. It is especially challenging for those playing here for the first time, and most first time players here struggled. Jeff Mucciarone, in his first trip over the course, took the low gross title with a fine 5 over par 77. No one else in the field shot better than 82. In the Net Division A competition, John Faucher was the best at 2 over par net. Doug Bray and Jeff Mucciarone were tied for second with 3 over par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, John Sawyer got the victory with a 4 over par net score. Allan McCue was 1 behind for second just 1 point better than Gary Schirmer in a tight battle for the top three spots.
The Saturday, May 7 event at Olde Scotland turned out to be a fabulous day for the golf with abundant sunshine and an afternoon temperature close to 70. The greens had been aerated earlier in the spring were just returning to normal, but were slower than normal. Johnathan Law was in good form and shot 3 over par on the day with two birdies for a 75. Peter Southwick had his best performance ever in his three years as a B.A.G.S.' member. Peter was tied with J. Law after nine holes with a 1 over par gross score of 37. Peter fell behind quickly when he made bogeys on the first three holes on the second nine. However, Peter finished only 2 shots behind J. Law with a fine par, birdie finish for a 77. No one else in the field broke 80. In the Net Division A competition, Glenn McIntyre was the man. Glenn shot a superb gross score of 81, which tied him for fourth best low gross score on the day. Glenn made the turn with 19 points or 1 under par net, and after a double bogey 6 on the long 455 yard par 4 tenth, Glenn really got hot. Glenn shot just 2 over par gross on the remaining 8 holes with the help of a birdie on the 383 yard par 4 fourteenth hole for 21 more points and a total of 40. In a tie for second were the above mentioned Peter Southwick and the much improved Adam Paone just 1 point behind with 39 points each. In the Net Division B competition, Matt Meyersohn bucked the odds and won his third straight Net Division B title in convincing style. Matt totally dominated the field with a massive 43 stableford points and will be looking at Net Division competition very soon after this incredible performance. Well back in a tie for second with even par net scores were: Lou Johnson, Tony Carmona, and Bill Feeney.
Most of the day was fine for golf for the Wednesday, May 4 event at Triggs Memorial. Nearly all the groups finished before the rain moved in around 3:15. The course had recent aeration and this made any putt of over a foot an adventure. John McNeill, now in his 20th year as a B.A.G.S.' member, played some fabulous golf at a course he knows well. John was just 1 over par after nine with 2 bogeys and a birdie on the 400 yard par 4 ninth when he made his only lengthy putt on the day when he drained an 18 footer. John got back to even par when he reached the 462 yard uphill par 5 thirteenth from about 200 yards out in two, and just missed the eagle putt. John gave one back when he three-putted the par 5 fifteenth from above the hole and missed the come back putt. John then made par on 16, and made a bogey on 17 after hitting the back portion of the green and had the ball bounce well off the back. John had a nice drive on the 410 yard eighteenth, and only had a short iron in and made par for 2 over total of 74. John' great playing was evidenced by the fact that no one else in the field shot better than 81 with Tom Dromgoole, the recent Net Division A Cape Champion, taking second place.
The members participating in the Cape Cod Spring Championship on the weekend of April 30 and May 1 had a fabulous weekend of golf. The weather was nearly ideal on Saturday in the low 60's, and while Sunday was cooler and more breezy, the 100% May sunshine made it a pleasant day to play. The courses were both in top condition with smooth fast greens as both courses held off on aeration until after our events. In the low gross competition, Tom Dromgoole and Jeff Mucciarone were tied for the lead after Saturday's opening round at Dennis Pines as both players shot identical score 40-40-80's. On Sunday, Jeff simply outclassed the rest of the field playing the first 16 holes in just 1 over par. On the 179 yard par 3 seventeenth, Jeff hit an uncharacteristic pulled seven iron into that plugged in the front bunker, and made his only double bogey on the day. Jeff made par on the 534 yard par 5 finishing hole that play about 550 yards into a strong breeze for a fine score of 3 over par 75. Bill Hutchins had the next best score on the day with an 80, and finished in a tie for second position with Bob Drury who had a pair of 82's on the weekend. In the Net Division A competition, Tom Dromgoole took a 2 point lead on Saturday over Dick Burt and Paul Rodgers with his even par net score of 72. Tom could only make 29 stableford points on Sunday where the gusty breezes affected his high ball flight. However, both of his closest challengers did worse, and Tom became the Net Division A champion. Bill Hutchins, as mentioned above, had the second best low gross score on the day with an 80 good for 34 stableford points or 2 over par net, and this propelled him into second place by himself. Brian Boyle, Bob Drury, and Jeff Mucciarone all shared third position. In the Net Division B competition, Dave Lee and Ed Guertin were outstanding on Saturday. Dave shot a superb gross score of 86 good for 41 stableford points. Ed Guertin played nearly as well, and was only 1 points behind. Evidence of how well these two played was shown by the fact that no one else in the field other than Brian Bakke had 36 points. Dick Malo aced the 159 yard fourth hole and received a free membership for a hole in one for the second consecutive year. On Sunday, Ed Guertin pulled away from Dave Lee with an even par net score. Dave Lee took played well enough to take second place. Allan McCue played extremely well on Sunday at Captains with 36 points, tying Ed G. and Michael Gilmore for the best point total on the day, and took third position overall in the Net Division B.
It was a warm and somewhat humid day with splashes of sun for the Wednesday, April 27 event at Highland CC. The course was in fine condition with smooth, fast, greens that rolled true. Jeff Mucciarone took the low gross title with a blazing finish. Jeff was 7 over par after playing the 15th, but caught fire and finished with three consecutive birdies to close out the round for a 4 over par score of 74. Tom Randele, back in B.A.G.S. after a year's absence, showed that he's still a player to be reckoned with. Tom's only bad hole was the first where he made a triple bogey after burying his ball in the fairway bunker off the tee. Tom shot only 4 over the rest of the way in, and took second place with a fine 1 over par 36 on the second nine. In the Net Division A competition, Tom Randele's net score of even par 70 was two better than Tom Dromgoole who struggled on the opening nine with only 14 stableford points, but turned it around nicely on the second nine with a 2 over par gross score of 37 good for 20 stableford points. Rey LeMaine got himself a free membership for the '12 season with an Albatross on the 470 yard par 5 second hole when his second shot hit the flagstick from about 200 yards out and dropped into the hole. In the Net Division B competition, Matt Meyersohn won his second consecutive event. Matt shot a fine gross score of 5 over par 40 on the opening nine good for 20 points. Matt was nearly as good on the closing nine with a 42 for 18 more points. Dick Malo and Ted Scholnick both played extremely well and tied for second with 37 points or 1 under par net. A poor weather day lead to the postponement and re-scheduling of the Saturday, April 23 Sandy Burr event to the following day. Sunday turned out much better with the temperature close to 70 degrees and just a couple of sprinkles toward the end. Jeff Mucciarone got off to a great start with a birdie on the opening hole and had another on the short 340 yard par 4 seventh, and with pars on 8 & 9, played the opening nine holes in 1 under par 35. Jeff was at 2 under for the day after another birdie on the 465 yard par 5 eleventh. Jeff's only bad hole was on the 405 yard par 4 twelfth were he took a double bogey 6. After pars on 13 & 14, Jeff got 1 back with a nice birdie on the 351 yard par 4 fifteenth to get back to 1 under par. A bogey on the 416 yard par 4 sixteenth dropped him back to even. Jeff pared 17 & 18 and finished at even par 72 and yet another entry into the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for an even par or better score. Glenn McIntyre and Doug Bray were Jeff's closest pursuers after nine with 1 over par scores of 37. Doug hung on for second with a 40 on the second nine while Glenn couldn't overcome triples bogeys on 11 and 13 and finished the nine with a 44. In the Net Division competition, there was a two way tie for first place. Buzz Speers had by far his best outing in just over a year with a gross score of 80. Buzz made the turn with 22 stableford points and did nearly as well on the second nine with 19 more. Glenn McIntyre, who as mentioned above, shot 1 over par gross for the first nine, made the turn with an almost unheard of 24 points, but at the end found that his 20 foot putt for bogey that he put in the hole from the back of the 18th green was necessary just to get him a tie for first place. Doug Bray was steady the whole round, and took third spot with 38 points or 2 under par net.
The morning drizzle cleared out just before the start of the Monday, April 19 event at Ferncroft CC, and the rest of day remained dry. The course was in excellent condition with greens somewhat more manageable than usual with the moisture on them taking some of the speed off the pace. Rey LeMaine was the best on this day. Rey shot a 9 over score of 81 that included 3 birdies, and was 3 better than Lew Weitzman, who only had 1 bad hole on the day when he pulled his tee shot left into the hazard area on the 480 yard uphill par 5 fifteenth hole and ended up making a triple.
The overnight storms cleared in out in time for the Sunday, April 17 event at The Pinehills - Nicklaus course. The sky cleared and it become rather warm with the temperature getting into the 60's. Jeff Mucciarone was in good form for this early season event, and played the first 11 holes in even par. After bogeys on the 436 yard par 4 and the 180 yard par 3 thirteenth, Jeff got back to just 1 over par with a birdie on short 312 yard par 4 fourteenth. Jeff was still at 1 over par after matching the card on holes 15, 16, and 17. A poor tee shot and an off line approach shot to the eighteen lead to Jeff's only double bogey on the day and a score of 3 over par 75. Will Peishoff, who tied for second the previous weekend, also got off to a good start, and was only 2 over par through 11 holes. Will played the final 8 holes in 2 over par including the only birdie on the day on the 411 yard par 4 finishing hole to finish in a tie for second with a 76 with last weekend's winner, Johnathan Law. New member, Kevin O'Donnell, in his first B.A.G.S.' event, played strong on the second nine, and took third position with a 77. In the Net Division A competition, Will Peishoff' s net score of 1 under par 71 was just good enough to beat the above mentioned Kevin O'Donnell, and another new member playing in his first event, Malcolm Cameron by 1 stroke. Orin Mayers, in for the weekend from Orlando, finished in a tie for 4th with Johnathan. In the Net Division B competition. another new member, Matt Meyersohn, played some phenomenal golf. Matt shot a gross 38 on the opening nine for an almost unheard of total on 25 stableford points or 7 under par net. Matt cooled off somewhat on the second nine, but still had a net eagle on the 528 yard par 5 sixteenth, and finished with a nice par on 18 for a net birdie and 17 more stableford points on the closing nine for a total of 42. Neil Denenberg had a fabulous round and might have been the winner on any other day. Neil shot a 4 over par gross score of 40 on the first nine good for 21 points. Neil had a couple of double bogeys on the second nine, but also finished in style with a par on the closing hole for a net birdie and 19 points for a total of 40, just 2 points behind. B.A.G.S.' veteran, Mark DelVecchio, starting his 8th season in B.A.G.S., played extremely well. Mark shot even par net and took third spot by himself. John Korzun, back in B.A.G.S. after missing last year's competition, gave a good accounting of himself and took fourth spot with a 1 over par net score of 73.
The weather cooperated for the Saturday, April 9 event at Atlantic CC. The day was bright and seasonable and for once on this date, the wind was not a factor. In the low gross competition, Johnathan Law took charge of this event on the opening nine with 2 birdies for a fine 1 over par score of 37. Johnathan' s closest pursuer, Rick Lewis, was 1 stroke back at 38. J. Law then played the next 8 holes in 1 under par with a birdie on the 510 yard par 5 sixteenth after a nice pitch to 3 feet from just off the green in two. J. Law made a double bogey 6 on the 370 yard par 4 finishing hole, and was in with a 37 for a total of 2 over par 74. Rick Lewis finished with 3 straight pars, and was in with another 38 for a 76. Will Peishoff started off the round with a double bogey 6 on the short 330 yard par 4 first hole, and played the rest of the way in at just 2 over par for a 76 and a tie for second with Rick. Ed Schene was steady all day and hit nearly every fairway and was fourth with a 77. In the Net Division A competition, Johnathan and Will finished in a tie for first with 1 under par net scores. Ed Schene and the Cape's Mike McAllister were in a tie for third with even par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, Ralph Daniels was the best. Ralph had 3 net birdies and 2 net eagles to offset the 2 holes in which he made triple bogeys for 0 points. Ralph shot a very fine gross score of 92 and had a total of 38 stableford points or 2 under par net. Steve Tella was in close pursuit, and scored a strong 19 points on the closing nine to fall just 1 point short of catching Ralph. Buzz Speers looked as though he had a chance to win after the first nine with a gross score of 41 good for 19 points and the lead. However, Buzz found trouble on a couple of holes on the second nine and scored 16 points which got him third position. Dave Lee played well and was in at 2 over par net for fourth spot.
The 2011 season - B.A.G.S.' 23rd - got underway at The Pinehills GC - Jones course - on Wednesday, April 6. It was very chilly at the start of the event and while there was plenty of sunshine, the brisk wind made it feel colder than the low 50's temperature and effected the scoring adversely. Jeff Mucciarone struggled early in the round, and made the turn with only 2 pars for a 43. Jeff made pars on 10 and 11 to settle down and after a bogey on the tough 420 yard par 4 twelfth hole, played the rest of the way home in even par for a 37 for an 8 over total of 80. Johnathan Law had the only birdie of the day on the first hole, but immediately made a double bogey on the next hole and finished with bookend 40's to finish in a tie for first with Jeff and Bob Drury. In the Net Division A competition, Doug Bray was an easy winner, as most of the competition found the breezy, cool, conditions just too difficult to handle. Doug made the turn with only 14 stableford points after his only zero point hole on the 550 yard par 5 ninth, and scarcely looked the potential winner. However, as others let their enthusiasm wane and looked for excuses, Doug got more determined. Doug made 4 straight pars to start out the second nine, and after a bogey on the long 220 yard par 3 fourteenth, pared out for a 1 over par 37. Doug's 35 stableford points were 2 better than new member, Glenn Maillet, playing well in his first event, and Bob Drury. In the Net Division B competition, former Net B club champion, John Sawyer, showed some fine early season form. John made 18 stableford points or even par net on both nine's and was the winner by 1 point over Dick Millen who seemingly had the event wrapped up after fourteen holes with 32 points. However, Dick ran out of gas, and could only score 3 more points on the last 4 holes. Dick Malo took third position with 31 points.
The 72- hole Florida Championship was contested on four superb Orlando area courses Friday - Monday December 2 -6. For the second consecutive year, and third overall, former B.A.G.S.' club champion, Chris Bae, won the Low Gross title. Chris shot 4 over par 292 for the 72 hole event and finished on Monday with a superb 1 under par 71 at Shingle Creek. Chris easily won the Net Division title as he lapped the field by 9 strokes while playing off a 0 handicap.
Although Jeff Mucciarone could not play in as many events as he had in previous years, his level of play in these events was at or above his level from any other year. Jeff won his record 7th straight low gross Order of Merit title and was the Society Club Champion for the third consecutive year. Jeff had 7 even par or better scores this season including 3 under par rounds at Indian Pond CC and CC of Halifax. The Net Division had a new Order of Merit winner this year. Chris Kreilkamp, in his 12th year as a B.A.G.S.' member, was in a tight battle with Ted Van Sickle for the entire season, and prevailed in the end with some fine performances in October. Ted took second place and had the very high honor of being the most improved player in B.A.G.S. Ted began the season with a handicap index of 21.5 and because of his determination to play well in B.A.G.S.' events and compete for the OOM title, Ted improved to 14.5 index by the end of the season. This type of improvement should serve as a strong indicator to anyone interested in determining whether B.A.G.S.' competition can have a significant effect on improving one's game. A couple of other players improved significantly also. Dan Chicoine, now 64 years old, improved from 12.6 to start the season to 9.3 at the end. Bob Steward found that the B.A.G.S.' competition provided him with more than enough reason to work on his game, and he improved from a 12.9 to 9.5.
It was very cool to start for the final event of the local season for the Monday, November 1 at Ferncroft CC. By the start of the 10:30 shotgun, the temperature was into the mid-40's. The calm conditions and abundant sunshine made it feel comfortable for golf. The course was in nice shape for early November and was a stern test from the Blue Tees for Net Division A at 6632 yards. Rick Lewis won his second straight event with a 7 over par 79 to end the local season in fine fashion. Steve Ross had an excellent short game and got up and down for par several times and just missed catching Rick with an 80. Steve's net score of 73 was by far the best in Net Division A. Bob Drury was well back in second place with a net score of 77. In the Net Division B competition, from the White tee markers, Mark Jezowski was by the best by a large margin. Mark's gross score of 91 was his best since an 87 at Passaconaway over 4 years ago. Mark had 1 net eagle and 8 net birdies including 4 in a row on holes 13 - 16, which more than offset the 2 zero point holes on 10 and 12. Mark's 40 stableford points was out of the ball park compared to the rest of the field. John Sawyer and Russ D'Auria were the best of the rest with 33 points.
It was a perfect mid- fall day for golf for the Saturday, October 30 event at Poquoy Brook. The temperature got well into the 50's and the abundant sunshine made it feel warmer. Johnathan Law got off to a very slow start playing the first 3 holes in 4 over par. A nice birdie on the short, 348 yard par 4 fourth hole got his interest level up, and played the rest of the nine in even par for 3 over total of 39. A bogey on the 382 yard par 4 tenth halted the momentum briefly. Johnathan made a par on the 384 yard par eleventh, and after a bogey on the 200 yard par three twelfth, Johnathan was at 5 over for the round. J. Law made pars on holes 13-16, to stay at 5 over. After a bogey on the tough 450- yard par 4 seventeenth, J.L was now 6 over. J.L. missed about a 12 footer for birdie on the 18th and was in with par for a total of 78. Lew Weitzman was in the lead in this event after 12 holes at just 4 over par. Lew, who switched from the conventional putting grip during the round to left hand low, got in trouble on the 383 yard par 4 thirteenth, and made a double bogey 6 to fall out of the lead. Lew played the rest of the way home in 2 over par for an 80 and second place. In the Net Division A competition, Ron Violette came through on the final 9 holes with a tremendous closing charge. Ron had a mediocre 15 points or 3 over par net after the completion of nine holes. After pars on holes 10, 11, and 12, Ron had a confidence boost. Ron played the final 6 holes in just 1 over par gross for a gross score of 37. This was good for 22 stableford points and an 18 hole total of 37. This was 1 better than Lew Weitzman. In third place with 34 points was Chris Kreilkamp who pretty much wrapped up the Net Division OOM title with this performance. In the Net Division B competition, Gary Schirmer was the man. Gary more than made up for a dismal performance the previous weekend on this same course. Gary was doing quite well after nine with 18 stableford points. However, it got a lot better on the second nine. After making a double bogey 6 on the 372 yard par 4 tenth, Gary began making pars and birdies. Gary made a par on 11 and a nice birdie on the 185 yard par 3 12th. A par followed that on 13, and a bogey on 14. Gary made a par on the par 3 15th, and followed that with the only birdie on the day at the 426 yard par 4 16th. Gary finished bogey, par for a gross score of 38 on the nine good for 23 stableford points. His total of 40 or 4 under par net was good for a 4 point win over Tony Carmona and Tom Bush.
Rain fell to the west and north, but hardly a drop fell on the course for the Wednesday, October 27 event at Halifax. Most of the members had to drive through some showers on the way to the course, however, nearly all showed up for the event. The weather was unusually warm and muggy for this time of year with temperature well into the 60's. Rick Lewis was the best on this day with a 7 over par 79 as the course was soft and played much longer that the measured 6726 yards from the Blue tees. In the Net Division A competition, Rey LeMaine came away with narrow 1 stroke win over: Rick Sprague, Lew Weitzman, and Kaz Noda with a 2 over par net score. In the Net Division B competition from the White tee markers, George Schreiner, the newest member of B.A.G.S., in just his second B.A.G.S.' event, was the winner with 32 points as field struggled. In the second place with 30 points was Chris Hulswit.
After a murky start, it turned out to be a fine day for golf for the Monday, October 25 event at Foxborough CC. There was very little wind and the course was in unbelievably good condition. There greens were mint and extremely quick. As always here, if you aren't prepared for the challenge on the greens, then nearly every hole is a possible 3 or 4 putts. Bob Drury was easily the best with no double bogeys on the card and a beautiful chip - in eagle on the 510 yard par 5 fifth hole. Bob finished at 5 over par 77 and the evidence of his superior play was the fact that no one else in the field shot better than 82. Well done, Bob! Chris Kreilkamp liked the quick greens as he putted exceptional well, and finished in a three way tie for first place in the Net Division A competition with Steve Ross, and the above mentioned Bob Drury at 2 over par net. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member, Dennis Vadenais, played well, and was in with 38 stableford points for the win.
It was cool and dry for the Saturday, October 23 event at Poquoy Brook. A cool breeze came up during the round, and this affected the scoring adversely. Rick Lewis was going for his second straight win, and he got off to a great start, playing the first 11 holes in just 1 over par. After a bogey on the 381 yard eleventh, Rick made back to back pars on 12 & 13. Fourteen is a short par 5 and would normally be a birdie hole for Rick, but the hole was playing back into the wind and the ball was not carrying too well in the cool weather and Rick could only make a bogey 6. Rick made pars on 15 & 16 and went to 4 over on the day with a bogey on the 450 yard par 4 seventeenth. Rick finished with a par on the 481 yard par 5 finishing hole for a 76. Brian Boyle had Rick well within his sight's, and was the leader in the event through 11 holes at 1 over par. Brian doubled the 200 yard par 3 twelfth hole to drop out of the lead. Brian got back into a tie for the lead with a par on 14, and had the lead by 1 with a par on 17 at 3 over par on the day. A poor tee shot on the sharp dogleg left closing par 5 lead to trouble, and Brian finished with a triple bogey 8 and a score of 78, but hung onto second place by 1 over Johnathan Law. In the Net Division A competition, Brian's triple on 18 was just a 0 point hole in the stableford scoring and his total of 36 points was good for a 3 point win over the very consistent Rick Sprague and Rick Lewis. In the Net Division B competition, there was a two way tie for first place. Dave Lee and Dick Weiner, now back in B.A.G.S. after missing several years of competition, both finished with 34 points or 2 over par net to share first place. Bud McGrath and Ralph Daniels were tied for third position with 32 points.
B.A.G.S.' first visit to Merrimack Valley GC was fine addition to the schedule as the re-worked layout turned out to be a great tournament site. A very cool and frosty morning ended up being a fine day for golf by mid-morning. The course, with its wonderful views from nearly every hole, provided a great scene of fall foliage. Lew Weitzman's ball found the large pond at the bottom of the hill off the first tee on the 511 yard par 5, but Lew recovered to make bogey, and he played the rest of the nine in even par for a 37. Lew also started the second nine from a similar elevated tee on the 387 yard par 4 with a bogey, and played the remaining holes in just 3 over par for a closing 37, and a total of 4 over par 74. Ned Emerson was slightly rusty having missed most of the events since an appearance in June, and shot 5 over par 41 on the opening nine. After pars on 10 & 11, Ned made a bogey on the relatively short 470 yard par 5 twelfth, to go to 7 over on the day. Ned got serious after this, and played the final 6 holes in 2 under par including a closing birdie on the 560 yard par finishing hole to catch Lew. Also in the hunt was, Chris Kreilkamp, who shot a fine 76 despite making a quadruple bogey 8 on the 7th hole. Peter Elliott won the Net with a fine 8 under score of 64 which was 1 better than Chris Kreilkamp.
The succession of fine fall weather continued for the Sunday, October 17 event at Sandy Burr. Recent aeration was performed on the first nine, but the second nine greens were all good. Rick Lewis got through the opening nine in just 2 over par, and really turned it on by making some putts on the much smoother second nine greens. After a par on the 200 yard par 3 tenth, Rick made his first birdie on the day on the short 465 yard par 5 eleventh. After a bogey on the 405 yard par 4 twelfth, Rick made back to back birdies on 13 & 14 to get back to even par on the day. After a tee shot down the left side on the narrow par 4 fifteenth hole that ended up under the large Willow tree on that side, Rick took 2 more to get onto the green, and then 3 - putted for a double bogey 6. Rick made another bogey on the 416 yard par 4 sixteenth to go to 3 over on the day. After a par on 17, Rick made an 10 foot birdie putt on the 405 yard par 4 finishing hole, and ended up shooting a 2 over par 74. Rick's dominance of this event was evidenced by the fact that the next closest competitor, Steve Swanson was 4 strokes behind Rick, and the only other player in the field to break 80. In the Net Division A competition, Mark DelVecchio was the best. Mark shot a fine gross score of 81, and his 39 stableford points or 3 under par net was 1 better than Steve Swanson who played the second nine par 5's in 3 under par. In the Net Division B competition, Adam Paone got the victory with 33 points as most of the field struggled. Paul McCurley and Tony Carmona tied for second with 32 points.
It was yet another fine day for golf for the Thursday, October 14 event at Hickory Hill GC. The course was in excellent condition, and there were several outstanding performances. Jeff Mucciarone, who holds the B.A.G.S.' record low score here with an even par 71, played the opening nine holes in even par 36. After a bogey on the 510 yard par 5 tenth, Jeff made pars on holes 11 - 17. Jeff made a bogey 5 on the 397 yard par 4 finishing hole for a fine 2 over par 73. Glenn Watson was right with Jeff after 10 holes, only 1 stroke behind. After a perfect drive on the 400 yard par 4 eleventh, Glenn hit his wedge thinly, and ended up near the stone wall behind the green. From this awkward position, Glenn could only make a triple bogey 7. Birdies on 13 and 15 got Glenn 2 of the strokes back, and he finished par, bogey, par for a 75 for second place. Richard Tenby and Bob Drury both played well and tied for third with 77's. In the Net Division A competition, Dan Chicoine and Scott Hanlon both played extremely well. Both shot superb gross scores of 79, and playing off identical handicaps, both were in with 3 under par net scores of 68. In the Net Division B competition, Dave Holland was the winner with a fine 2 under par net score of 69. Playing in the same foursome with Dave were: Peter Elliott and Jim Kelly who finished second and third respectively with net scores of 70 & 71.
After a cool morning, it turned rather nice for the Sunday, October, 10 event at George Wright. The temperature got into the 60's by afternoon, and the course was in excellent condition. Doug Bray had a hot putter all day, and played the opening nine in just 2 over par despite making a double bogey 6 on the 412 yard par 4 fifth. Doug played the second nine in 3 over par with 3 bogeys and the rest pars for a fine 5 over par score of 75. Johnathan Law was the leader after nine holes with an even par score of 35. J. L. made a double on the 462 yard par 4 tenth hole, but still had the lead over Doug by 1. After a par on 11, Johnathan fell out of the lead after hitting his drive to the right on the tight 412 yard par 4 twelfth hole, and made a double bogey 6. Johnathan got himself back into the lead by 1 over Doug after converting a 4 foot birdie putt on the 340 yard par 4 sixteenth while Doug was making a bogey. However, Doug made pars and 17 & 18 and J.L. made bogeys on both to finish 1 behind with a 76. In the Net Division A competition, Doug finished 2 ahead of Richard Tenby and Chris Kreilkamp with a net score of 69. In the Net Division B competition, Dave Lee looked like an easy winner after amassing 19 stableford points on the opening nine and then making a par on the long 10th hole, double stroke hole, for a net eagle, and a gross birdie on the 347 yard par 4 eleventh for another net eagle, good for 27 points or 5 under par net after 11 holes. Dave L. made net pars on holes 12 - 14, and was still 5 under par net with 4 holes to play. However, the gas tank was nearly on empty and Dave could make only 2 more stableford points on those 4 holes, and finished at 1 over par net, and was caught for a tie for first by Paul Kudarauskas.
It was a tale of two different weather days for the Cape Cod Fall Classic on the weekend of October 2 and 3rd. Saturday was a perfect early fall day for golf at the nicely conditioned layout at Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds. The temperature got into the 70's under a deep blue sky with little wind, and there were plenty of great scores. Brian Boyle, the winner last weekend at Glen Ellen, was still in excellent form and was the leader after Saturday's opening round with a 4 over par score of 75. Rhode Island invader, Dave Gamache, played some very steady golf and was just behind Brian with a 76 despite finishing the round with 3 consecutive bogeys. The favorite coming into the event, Rick Lewis, was back in third with a 77. Lew Weitzman made a closing birdie on 18 to finish with a 78. Sunday at Cape Cod CC was not nearly as nice a day. The sky was filled with dark clouds, the wind picked up and was gusty at times, and the temperature never went above 56 degrees. This was the first time Cape Cod CC had been on the B.A.G.S.' schedule, and local knowledge was necessary on many of the holes and especially on the greens which were very hard to read correctly. On this day, no one in the field broke 80. Tom Dromgoole was low gross with an 82. Brian Boyle shot an 87, and held onto a tie for first with Dave Gamache 86, and Rick Lewis 85. In the Net Division A competition, Saturday's leader by 2 strokes, Dave Gamache, just held on to win by 1 over Mark DelVecchio, who tied for the second best net score on Sunday. Chris Kreilkamp took third position. In the Net Division B competition, several players went really low on Saturday at OBFG. Adam Paone shot a 79 gross, his best by 4 strokes in his first season as a B.A.G.S.' member, good for a massive 42 stableford points. Mark Jezowski shot a gross 88, his first sub-90 score in over 4 years in a B.A.G.S.' event. This was good for 41 points. Dave Lee was also right there with superb round of 87 and 40 points of his own. Ray Fearnley was lurking not far behind with 39 points. On Sunday, as is often the case in 2 day events for Net Division B players, most couldn't hold the magic of Saturday for 1 more day. The weather, which went from mild and calm to cool and windy with no sunshine also had an effect. Adam, Mark and Dave Lee all struggled, and left the door wide open for the left handed Ray Fearnley to take the first place prize. Ray played steady golf on Sunday and his 1 over par net score of 72 was easily good enough. Adam P. and Mark J. had to settle for second place, 3 strokes behind. Dick Malo was the best in the field on Sunday. Dick, a low ball hitter, was the least affected by the wind, and his net score of 70 moved him all the way up to solo fourth after being well back with a net 77 in Saturday's round..
It was a warm, summer-like day for the Wednesday, September 29 event at Andover CC. By mid-day, the temperature was close to 80 degrees. The opening nine greens were still in recovery from early season problems and the speed was very slow, and as a result, many putts were left short of the hole. The second nine greens were considerably better. Johnathan Law continued his fine play from Monday at Pawtucket CC, and shot 1 over par 37 on the opening nine. A birdie on the 460 yard straight away par 5 tenth got him back to even par on the round. A pull- hooked tee shot well to the left of the 200 yard par 3 eleventh lead to a lost ball and a double bogey 5. After a par on the short 343 yard par 4 twelfth, Johnathan made the only birdie of the day on the long. 446 yard par 4 thirteenth and followed that up with a birdie on the lengthy 570 yard par 5 fourteenth to get back to even par. After a par on the 190 yard par 3 fifteenth, J.L. made his 4th birdie on this nine on the short 307 yard par 4 sixteenth. to get to 1 under par for the round. J.L. made a par on the 394 yard par 4 seventeenth to stay at 1 under. J.L. 3-putted for bogey on the 397 yard par 4 finishing hole, but his score of even par 72 was good enough to get him another spot in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book. The ultimate evidence of Jonathan's fine play in this event was the fact that the next best score was a 77 by Jeff Mucciarone. Johnathan also dominated the Net Division A competition with a 4 point win over Steve Preble, who seemed to love the slow front nine greens, shot even par gross score of 36 on this nine for 23 stableford points. 17 & 18, which are difficult holes, killed Steve's chances of winning when he could only make 1 point total on them. Doug Bray took third position with 34 points. In the Net Division B competition, Dick Malo had 4 net birdies, and a total of 21 points after nine. Dick had just 1 net birdie on the second nine, but had no zeroes and his total of 38 points was just enough. Loi Nguyen had 21 points after just 8 holes, but could only make 16 more on the final 11 holes and finished 1 point behind in second place. Dick Millen played well and took third spot with an even par net score of 72.
Pawtucket CC was in very nice condition for the Monday, September 27 event. Beautifully conditioned fairways and fast, smooth, putting greens are the norm here, and that was the case again for this event. Johnathan Law came back from a mediocre performance at the weekend event at Glen Ellen in fine fashion. Johnathan was at 4 over par on what would be considered the easier opening nine with a 39 A par on the long 435 yard par tenth got him going in the right direction, and he also made pars on holes 11- 13. J. L. made a bogey on 14, and a missed green lead to a double bogey 5 on the 170 yard par 3 fifteenth. Johnathan made the only birdie on the day at the 432 yard par 4 sixteenth, and played the last 2 holes in 1 under with a birdie on the 380 yard finishing hole for a 5 over par score of 74. Jim DiBiase, playing in the same group with Johnathan, was 2 strokes behind after nine, and also shot a 1 over par score of 35 on the second nine for a 76 for second place. Rhode Island member, John Phillips was in third with a 77. John Phillips finished just ahead of Johnathan and Jim for first in the Net Division A competition. Rhode Island veteran, Bill Smith, won the Net Division B competition, with 39 points.
It turned very warm with some humidity for the Saturday, September 25 event at Glen Ellen GC. B.A.G.S. had not played an event here in 15 years, but many of the members were familiar with the course, and there were several outstanding performances. Brian Boyle was out to redeem himself after a mediocre performance the previous weekend at Sandy Burr. After a bogey on the long 448 yard par 4 opening hole, Brian played the rest of the nine in 1 under par for a 36. Brian was just off the green in two on the 521 yard par 5 tenth and made another birdie to go to 1 under par for the round. Brian matched the card for pars through the seventeenth hole. Brian was at 1 under par on the eighteenth green in regulation, but ended up with a double bogey after missing a short putt for a 4 -putt. This didn't really matter in the final outcome of the event because Orin Mayers, the closest pursuer, was 5 strokes back with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Brian was 4 better than Rey LeMaine who played well, and Orin M. In the Net Division B competition, Tony Carmona was the man. Now completing his 9th season of B.A.G.S.' competition, with over 200 events played, Tony had never broken the 80 barrier. In fact, his best previous score had been 83, which he matched several times. In this event, Tony was at just 2 over par gross through the first 10 holes for 27 stableford points or 5 under par net. After bogeys on 11 & 12, Tony made a par on 13 and a nice birdie on the 352 yard par 4 fourteenth to get back to 3 over par. Tony made another par on the 333 yard par 4 fifteenth to stay 3 over. Tony then made bogeys on 16 & 17, but came through with a par on the 150 yard par 3 finishing hole for a gross score of 77, and an incredible 46 stableford points and a place in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book. Well done, Tony! Adam Paone surely though he was a winner. Adam made the turn with 23 points just 1 behind Tony's total. Adam was tied with Tony after 11 holes as Adam made pars for net birdies on both holes. Adam cooled off after that and had no more net birdies and finished with a fine total of 40 points or 4 under par net. Jim Siwila had a magical opening nine holes. Jim came to the 470 par 5 ninth at just 3 over par gross, and to top off the nine off made an eagle three to finish at 1 over par gross for an unheard of 26 stableford points. Jim then made a double bogey 7 on the 500 yard par 5 tenth for 1 point and seemed to lose momentum after that and could only accumulate at total of 12 points on the second nine. He did, however, hang on to third place by 1 point over Ted Scholnick.
The heat and humidity made a return for the Wednesday, September 22 event at Swansea. It got well into the 80's by afternoon. The scoring by three of the members matched the close to record heat. Andrew Seefield had never seen the course before, but that hardly seemed to matter. Andrew got it to 2 under par after making a birdie on the 500 yard par 5 seventeenth, his 4th birdie on the day. A three - putt bogey on the 460 yard uphill par 4 finishing hole put Andrew at 1 under 71 for the day. Andrew needed each of those 4 birdies because Johnathan Law and Jeff Mucciarone were right there with him the whole round. Johnathan made the turn at 2 under par and was in the out right lead after knocking it close on the 184 yard par 3 eleventh and making the putt for birdie to go to 3 under. Bogeys on 12, 14, and 18 pushed him back to even for the day. Jeff Mucciarone was 1 over after 11 holes, but birdies on 14 and 17 got him back to even par for the round and a tie for second low gross. Never before in the 22 years of B.A.G.S.' competition have 3 players shot even par or better in an event.
It was a spectacular day for golf for the Monday, September 20 event at Norfolk GC. It got well into the 80's under a cloudless sky. The course was in fabulous condition with pristine putting surfaces that were true and quick. Andrew Seefield played some fine golf, and was the winner by 1 shot over Jeff Mucciarone with a 2 over par 72. Johnathan Law shot a nice 3 over par 73 to take third position. In the Net Division competition, Bill Gray was much the best. Bill shot a gross score of 82, his best by 4 strokes in his 6 years of B.A.G.S.' competition. Bill's net score of 64 was 3 better than Dick Millen who played extremely well. Dick had 6 net birdies, and needed 1 more on the 18th to catch Bill, but made a double bogey 5 for a 0 on the 185 yard par 3. Jim Kelly was back in form for this event, and took third with a fine 2 under par net score.
The string of excellent golf days continued for the Saturday, September, 18 event at Sandy Burr. The sky turned cloudy by afternoon, but it remained quite mild. Jeff Mucciarone was at even par through 12 holes before making a bogey on the 185 yard par 3 thirteenth. He quickly got that stroke back with a nice birdie on the 369 yard par 4 fourteenth when he knocked his short approach shot to within 5 feet. After a bogey on 15, Jeff made a par on the 409 yard par 4 sixteenth after a huge drive of 285 yards. Jeff made a birdie on the 521 yard par 5 seventeenth to get back to even par on the day. A finishing bogey on the uphill 406 yard 18th put Jeff at 1 over par on the day. Jeff's 73 was 3 better than Johnathan Law who closed strongly with an even par score of 36 on the second nine. Rick Lewis was just 1 behind Johnathan closing with a second nine score of 1 under par 35 with 3 birdies. In the Net Division A competition, Dennis Callahan did what he seems to do every year at this layout - a runaway victory. Dennis's round really got started with a par - net birdie on the 281 yard par 4 ninth to finish the nine with an even par net score of 18 points. Dennis then played the next 5 holes in 1 under par gross for 14 quick points. After a double bogey 6 for 1 point on fifteen, Dennis made a par - net birdie on sixteen after 2-putting from the front of the green. Dennis finished bogey, bogey, bur made 2 stableford points on each hole to finish with 22 points on the nine and a total of 40. Buzz Speers and Steve Preble both played well but were 3 points behind in a tie for second. In the Net Division A competition, Bill Feeney played extremely well, and got his first victory of the year. Bill's even par net score was 1 better than: Dick Millen, and Jim Doughty who also had his best result this year.
B.A.G.S. made its first trip to Fall River CC for the Thursday, October 16 event. This is a unique course with 6 holes along the Taunton River that requires many trips over the quirky layout to be able to get a feel for the shots. Lew Weitzman proved on this day that when he's in fine form he's very difficult to beat. Lew had 2 birdies on the first nine for a 1 over par score of 37. Lew made a nice par on the 520 yard par 5 tenth hole, and got it to just 1 over par for the day with a birdie on the tight 316 yard par 4 eleventh. Lew was still at just 3 over for the day after a bogey on the sixteenth. However, Lew finished with double bogey 6's on the 17 & 18 in waning daylight. Lew's 77 was still easily the best on the day with Bob Heenan taking second with an 80. Lew's net score of 68 was 3 better than Ed Fitzhenry, who played well once again. Paul Rodgers was back in action after missing all the summer events because of travel in Italy, and he took third position with a net score of 73. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member, Frank Colalella, beat veteran Boston member, Bill Robinson, by 1 point with a net score of even par 70.
The excellent September weather continued for the Saturday, September 11 event at Franklin Park GC. By afternoon, under a cloudless sky, it was above 70 degrees and there were several fine scores as the greens ran fast and smooth. Jeff Mucciarone was 4 over par after making consecutive bogeys on 10 and 11, both short par 4's of under 340 yards. Jeff made a birdie on the downwind 510 yard par 5 eleventh, but gave that back on tough uphill 404 yard par 4 twelfth with a bogey 5. After pars on 13 & 14, Jeff made a nice deuce on the 164 yard par 3 fifteenth. Jeff made pars on 16 & 17, and was in the greenside bunker in 2 on the 473 yard par 5 finishing hole. Jeff's chip shot was short of the hole and a 3 putt followed for a closing bogey and a score of 4 over par 74. Bob Drury was in the lead of this tournament after 11 holes at even par. However, the tough 12th hole was costly to him as Bob made a triple here. Bob played the closing 6 holes in 2 over par for 5 over total of 75 to hold onto second place. The trio of: John Gibson, Johnathan Law, and Rick Lewis shared third with 76's.. In the Net Division A competition, John Gibson was 1 point better than Laurence Barden and Richard Tenby with a 1 under par net score of 69. In the Net Division B competition, there was a three way tie for first with: Joe Regan, John Cochran, and Bob Hudd all shooting 1 over par net scores of 71.
It was a nice day for golf for the Thursday, September, 9 event at Allendale CC with the afternoon temperature around 70 degrees. This course seems to get better every year and playing here is a treat. It's all about the sloping greens here, and the best advice is to stay below the hole on all approach putts. Doug Bray got all the bad holes out of the way early. Doug started with a triple bogey 7 on the 391 yard par 4 opening hole, then made a bogey 5 on the 458 yard par 4 second, and another bogey on the par 3 third to start the round 5 over par. Doug used his long B.A.G.S.' experience to not get too disconcerted or nonplussed, and played the rest of the holes in just 2 over par for the winning score on the day of 79. Clyde Rowells also came back from a tough start with a 7 over par score of 43 on the opening nine. Clyde had two birdies on the second nine to shoot a very good score of 1 over par 37 to just miss catching Doug. Doug's net score of even par 72 was also 1 better than Clyde. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member, Rick Heym, was the best. Rick shot a fine 3 under par net score of 69.
B.A.G.S. returned to Atlantic CC for the final time this season for the Sunday, September 5 event. It was at least 20 degrees cooler on this day than previous event at Indian Pond on Wednesday, and the windy conditions definitely affected the scoring. Rick Lewis has been gaining momentum all year, and has seen his handicap index reflect that by dropping to 1.1 strokes. Although predominantly a low - ball hitter, Rick struggled in the windy conditions on the opening nine with a 4 over par score of 40. A nice stretch of holes followed with pars on 10 -13 and before Rick made his only birdie on the day on the 339 yard par 4 thirteenth after nearly pitching into the hole from 90 yards for eagle. Rick played the rest of the holes coming in at even par for a 1 under par 35. Rick's 75 was 3 better than Jeff Mucciarone. In the Net Division A competition, Dennis Callahan came through in a big way. Dennis pared half the holes, made a nice birdie on the 372 yard par 4 twelfth, and was the winner by 2 points. In the Net Division B competition, Mike Nelson was much the best. Mike was particularly strong on the closing nine with 3 net birdies and a net eagle off a gross birdie on the 478 yard par 5 fourteenth. Mike's 39 points was well clear of second place finisher, Paul Kudarauskas. Ted Van Sickle continued his fine play this year by taking third position.
The heat and humidity lasted into the Wednesday, September, 1 event at Indian Pond CC. The course was in great condition with some of the truest putting surfaces we play on all year. Jeff Mucciarone didn't seem to mind the 95 degree temperature, and played a superb round of golf. Jeff had two birdies on the opening nine to offset two bogeys and the rest pars for an even par 9 hole score of 36. Jeff reached the 559 yard par 5 tenth in two shots, and two putted for a birdie to go to 1 under par. After pars on 11 & 12, Jeff made a birdie on the 150 yard par 3 thirteenth to go to 2 under par. After pars on 14-17, Jeff pitched onto the 548 yard par 5 finishing from the right rough from about 70 yards and sunk a fast moving birdie putt from 20 feet to shoot the B.A.G.S.' record low score of 3 under par 69 at this course. Jim DiBiase also played some excellent golf and might have been a winner on any other day with his fine 3 over par score of 75. Bob Drury also played well on this draining day and was in with a 77. In the Net Division A competition, Jeff's net score 69 was 1 better than Glenn McIntyre who shot a superlative 1 over par 37 gross on the opening nine for an incredible 24 stableford points. Glenn just tried to hold on during the second nine play rather then keep attacking, and came in with a 47 gross for only 14 points, but he forced Jeff to make a birdie putt on 18 to beat him. In the Net Division B competition, Larry Brewster used the second nine to secure his victory. Larry had a mediocre 16 points or 2 over par net on the opening nine, but shot a fine gross score of 43 on the finishing nine good for 21 points to win by 4 points.
B.A.G.S. returned to South Shore CC for the final time this season for the Sunday, August 29 event. It was another warm day in this summer of above average heat and 90+ degree days. Those that walked this hilly layout were well aware of the heat and humidity by the end of the round. Rick Lewis is having a fabulous year in B.A.G.S.' tournament play this year and Sunday was another fine achievement. Rick matched the card with pars on the first 7 holes. Rick made about a 12 footer for birdie on the 195 yard par 3 eight to go 1 under par. Three good shots put Rick on the green and putting for birdie on the 500 yard par ninth. However, after going about 5 feet past the hole on the downhill approach putt, Rick missed the come back putt for a bogey and nine hole score of 36. Rick quickly got that stroke back with a 15 footer for birdie on the short tenth hole. Pars followed on 11-13. Rick was just off the back of the green in two on the short but difficult 330 yard par 4 fourteenth. The birdie putt amazingly found the bottom of the hole from over 20 feet to put Rick at 2 under for the round. Rick was on the long 570 yard par 5 fifteenth in regulation, but similar to the ninth, he three putted for a bogey. Rick got up and down from just out of the hazard well left on 16 after a pulled tee shot, and 2 putted from the back of the two tiered green on the par 3 seventeenth from 30+ feet for par. After a good drive with a rescue club on the short 470 yards par 5 finishing hole, Rick just avoided the hazard well left of the green after a big pull hook. Rick got up and down for par and matched the B.A.G.S.' record score here of 71, set just 1 month earlier. William Byrd had his best effort in his first year as a B.A.G.S.' member with a fine 1 over par score of 73 to take second place with a birdie, birdie finish. Jeff Mucciarone had a great second nine score of 2 under par 34 to take third spot with a 74. Leigh MacKay also played well and took fourth with a 75. In the Net Division A competition, Rick Lewis was a 1 point winner with a 3 under par net score of 69 over new member this year, Wes Evans and William Byrd. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Scholnick was the best. Ted shot a very fine gross score of 89, and his total of 40 stableford points was 4 better than Allan McCue who took second place. Joe Regan took fourth spot with a 1 over par net score.
The early week stormy weather was long gone for the Thursday, August 26 event at Highfields G & CC. It was a perfect day for golf with the temperature in the upper 70's and brilliant sunshine. Bob Jarchow was close to breaking 80 in last May's Spring Valley CC event with a gross score of 80, but on this day, Bob got under the 80 mark for the first time in a B.A.G.S.' event in now his third full season. Bob shot 5 over par 41 on the opening nine, and started off the second nine with a bogey on the 411 yard par 4 tenth. A nice string of holes followed. Bob played holes 11 - 15 at 2 under par with birdies on 12 & 15. Bob made a bogey on the long 441 yard par 4 sixteenth, and followed that with bogeys on 17 & 18 for a score of 2 over par 38 for a 79 and his first low gross win. Peter Southwick had a similar type round as Bob. Peter was 6 over after the opening nine, and shot a fine 38 on the closing nine for an 80 to tie for second in the low gross. In the Net Division A competition, Bob Jarchow's massive total of 43 was good for the easy win by 3 points over Jim Foehr. Peter Southwick took third position with 37 points or 1 under par net. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Scholnick had a fabulous opening nine. Ted shot just 6 over par gross for a 42 including the only birdie of the day on the 570 yard par 5 ninth. After 2 net pars and a net eagle on holes 10 - 12, Ted was at 6 under par net. However, Ted struggled on 13 & 14 and with triple bogeys on both made no points. Ted finished fine after that with three net pars and a net birdie for a total of 39 stableford points or three under par net. This was just enough to win by 1 point over Rhode Island member, Alain Morin. Dick Malo also played well and was alone in third spot with a 1 under par net score of 71.
The 22 annual B.A.G.S.' Championship was contested on the weekend of August 21 & 22 at Olde Scotland Links. Saturday was a fine day for golf with just some clouds around by afternoon and the temperature in the upper 70's. The course was in good condition and the greens rolled well. Jeff Mucciarone took a giant step toward his third consecutive Society Championship in which he has either won by himself or tied for first with a 1 under par 4 birdie round of 71. The next best score was by Rick Lewis who came in with a 3 over par round of 75 that included an amazing 5 birdies. Ed Schene was right there also with a fine 4 over par score of 76. On Sunday, the leaders, with Johnathan Law who shot an opening round of 77 joining them, went off together. Sunday's round was played in a steady light rain that was quite a nuisance as grips got wet, but the course never became soggy and the greens never accumulated any water. Jeff was not as sharp on Sunday because of the adverse conditions, and finished the opening nine with no birdies and a 4 over par 40. Rick and Johnathan were only 1 shot better, and Ed was 1 worse than Jeff heading to the second nine. After a bogey on the 455 yard par 4 tenth which played its full length on this day, Jeff played the rest of the way in 1 under par for a 76 and 5 stroke win over Rick Lewis. Johnathan held onto 3 position by 1 shot over the hard charging Mark Dwyer, who shot a 2 over par score of 74, matching the best score of the day by Tom Dromgoole. In the Net Division A competition, the hot Bob Steward and Ron Violette playing on his home turf, shot 80 and 79 gross respectively for 39 points or 3 under par net and were 3 ahead of 19 year B.A.G.S.' member, Dan Chicoine. Dan got serious on Sunday. He was at the course early working on his game and although he started off with bogeys on the first and second holes, he made pars on the next 4 holes and the momentum started building. Dan shot a gross score of 39 on the opening nine good for 20 stableford points. Dan also started off the closing nine with consecutive bogeys, but played the remaining 7 holes in just 1 over par gross for another 39. Dan's gross score of 78 was his best in a B.A.G.S.' event this year and his 40 points pushed him 3 clear of Bob Steward. Mark DelVecchio was another of the few players who shot better on Sunday. Mark was in with 37 points on Sunday to finish in a tie for third position with Tom Dromgoole who rallied from way back with a superb 2 over par score of 74 good for a massive total of 41 stableford points. In the Net Division B competition, Buzz Speers was superlative on Saturday. Despite making a double bogey on the opening hole and finishing with a bogey on 18, Buzz shot a gross score of 80 good for 41 stableford points. Adam Paone was in close with 38 points despite having to take a painful 2 stroke penalty for hitting the wrong ball. Chad Fisher got off to a good start, and was just 1 behind the leader. In the rain and drizzle on Sunday, Buzz opened with a triple bogey and then a double bogey on the second and the wind came out his sails. Adam Paone played equally well on Sunday, and was in again with 38 more stableford points. Tom Sawyer made a late charge with 38 points of his own, but had to settle for second place 3 points behind Adam. Tony Beckwith was played consistently well both days with even par net scores both rounds to finish 1 point behind Tom Sawyer in third.
It was a perfect day for golf for the Wednesday, August 18 event at Poquoy Brook. The course was in its usual great condition and there were several fine performances. Johnathan Law started off with a birdie after a fine drive on the 363 yard par 4 first, and came to the eighth at just 1 over par before finding trouble on the 553 yard par 5 ninth and made a double bogey 7 for a 39. Johnathan made bogey on the 382 yard par 4 tenth, and then played the rest of the way in at even par for 4 over par total of 76. Tom Sullivan back in B.A.G.S. after missing several years due to a severe shoulder injury, got off to a rough start with a double bogey 6 on the first hole. Tom also made a double bogey on the long 426 yard par 4 seventh, and with a bogey on 8 and a par on nine was in at 6 over par seemingly out of the tournament. Tom hung in there and things quickly improved. Tom made 6 straight pars and after a birdie on the short par 5 fourteenth, Tom was now 1 under on the second nine and just 5 over on the round. Tom finished with pars on 17 & 18 and was in a tie for second with Jeff Mucciarone who made a birdie on 18 for 77. Tom's net score of 72 got him the Net Division A title by 1 point over Johnathan. Fred Mather played well, and took third position with a 2 over par net score. In the Net Division B competition, Gary Schirmer was a 2 point winner despite making zero point holes on both 9 and 17. It helped that Gary made gross pars on half the holes and had 7 net eagles. Mike Harney liked the course as did Lloyd King who always plays well here and they finished in a tie for second with 1 over par net scores of 73 along with Ralph Faiola.
The humidity cleared out and it was a perfect day for golf with the temperature in the low 80's for the Saturday, August 14 event at Acushnet River Valley. Jeff Mucciarone has been in superb form for recent events and he got off to a tremendous start with 4 birdies in his first 6 holes before making a bogey 5 on the 451 yard par 4 seventh hole. Jeff made a par on the par 3 eighth and despite a bogey on the long 575 yard par 5 ninth, was still in at 2 under par 34 after nine. Another bogey followed on the 361 yard par 4 tenth and then a par on the 158 yard par 3 eleventh. Jeff had an eagle putt after reaching the 536 yard par 5 twelfth, which was playing downwind. However, Jeff ended up 3-putting for a par 5. Jeff was back to even par on the round after making bogey on the 605 yard par 5 fourteenth. He made pars on 15 & 16 and bogey on the 185 yard par 3 seventeenth to go to 1 over. After a perfect drive on the 400 yard par finishing hole, Jeff came up short in the bunker in front of the green and after leaving the third in the sand could only make a 6 to finish with a disappointing 3 over par 75. Rick Lewis was also strong until the very end. Rick had three birdies on the scorecard, and was just 1 over par coming to the 185 yard par 3 seventeenth. Rick 3 -putted for a bogey and also made a bogey on the eighteenth to finish in a tie for first with Jeff M. In the Net Division A competition, the winner last weekend at Crosswinds, Bob Steward, continued his fine play. Bob was in with 35 stableford points or 1 over par net after making 20 points on the opening nine to finish in a tie for first with above mentioned Rick Lewis. Dave Pelletier played well at his home course and finished in a tie for third with Jeff M. In the Net Division B competition, there were some fabulous scores. Dennis Callahan has played well here in the past and on this day he was great again with help of an incredible start. Dennis had gross birdies on 3 of his first 4 holes all for net eagles. A gross par on the ninth, gave him 3 more points for a nine hole total of 23. Dennis was nearly as good on the closing nine with 4 net birdies for 20 more points for a massive total of 43 stableford points. Dennis needed all these points because Bill Feingold was having a career best round. Bill shot a fine gross score of 43 on the opening nine for 21 points, and was able to match that total on the second for 42 points. Dave Lee was on fire also. Dave was at 22 points after nine after making a gross par on the long ninth hole for a net eagle for 4 points. Dave just came up short on the closing nine with 19 points for a total of 41 and third position. Look for Dave to do well in the upcoming Championship Weekend at Olde Scotland Links.
It was a warm and windy day for the Sunday, August 8 event at Crosswinds - Jones - Ouimet nines. Jeff Mucciarone is playing at a high level right now, and the rest of the low gross field has a lot of improving to do to compete with him. Jeff played the opening nine on the Jones course at 2 over par 38. Jeff went to 3 over par after a bogey on the 175 yard par 3 eleventh. After a par on 12, Jeff made birdies on 4 of the next 5 holes and needed a par on 18 to shoot even par. Jeff pulled his tee shot into the left rough and could only make bogey for a 1 over par score of 73. This was a fabulous score on a day when shots and putts were strongly effected by the swirling crosswinds. Rick Lewis tried to hang in there and was only 2 over par for the round after a birdie on the 496 yard par 5 fourteenth. Bogeys on 15 & 16 forced Rick to go for the flagstick on the downhill par 3 seventeenth, but he misjudged the wind and flew the green to the right and had to play out of the hazard and ended up with a triple bogey 6. In the Net Division A competition, Bob Steward continued his fine play. Bob took second at a recent event at Halifax and on this day no one was close to him. Bob shot a fine gross score of 81, even though he made a triple on the last hole, and was in with 39 stableford points or 3 under par net. In the Net Division B competition, Don Cybulski had his best result of the year. Don shot an even par net score of 72 to win by a single point over B.A.G.S.' veteran, Richard Books, who also had his best finish so far this year with 35 points. Chris Hulswit was not far off the top with 34 point to take third position.
Norton CC was in its usual fine condition for the Thursday, August 5 event. Although this is a flat course and measures less that 6600 from the back tees, it's a tight and demanding course rated at over 73 for a par 71 layout. Jeff Mucciarone was in top form again for this event having played the last two B.A.G.S.' event in a total of 3 under par. Jeff played the first 15 holes at even par with 2 birdies and several superb up and downs for pars with 1 -putt greens on 14 & 15. Jeff hit a pitching wedge on the 140 yard par 3 sixteenth that flew the green and landed in the hazard behind the green and had to take a drop from the hazard. Jeff got up and down for bogey to go to 1 over par on the round. Jeff missed the green on the 382 yard par 4 seventeenth after a good drive, but 1-putted again for par. Jeff's tee shot on the 426 yard par 4 finishing hole was a fairway metal that went through the corner of the dogleg right fairway. Jeff hit nine iron from about 165 yards that ended up on the green about 13 feet short. Jeff just missed the putt, but his 1 over par 72 was good for a 2 stroke win over Rhode Island veteran, Hermen Dacones. In the net Division A competition, Jeff and Herman finished in a tie for first with net 70's. In the Net Division B competition, Bill Ryan came through with a fantastic round. Bill shot a gross 45 on the opening nine which was good for 19 stableford points. Bill made a nice birdie on the 345 yard par 4 tenth for a net eagle and went on to shoot a superb 4 over par gross score of 39 on the second nine for 22 more stableford points. Bill's gross score of 84 was 5 better than his previous best in nearly 2 years of B.A.G.S.' competition. Ted Van Sickle played well once again and finished with 8 points on his last three holes for a total 39, but couldn't catch Bill who was in with 41 points.
It was a nice afternoon for golf for the Monday shotgun start at the CC of Halifax on August 2. The course was in great condition and the putting greens were the equal if not better than of any of the best that we have played all year. This in not an easy course with many of the par 4's over 400 yards from the back tee markers with a course rating of 73.1. This is also evidenced by the fact that no one in the 15 years that B.A.G.S. has been playing here has been able to shoot better than 75. Jeff Mucciarone is in real good form right now and completely dominated the field for this event. Jeff had an amazing 5 birdies on the way to shooting a sizzling 3 under par score of 69. Jeff' s next closet competitors: Rick Lewis and Glenn Watson were 9 strokes behind. Jeff also took the Net Division A prize with a net 68. Bob Steward had a hot putter and was close at net 69. John Faucher played some steady golf, and got third position with a net 71. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Van Sickle continued his outstanding play, and was in a tie for first with Rhode Island member, Lou Izzi, with net 70. Ted had 7 net birdies on the day.
B.A.G.S. returned to South Shore CC to close out the month of July for the Saturday event. Andrew Seefield seemed to love the greens and made some amazing putts for birdie. After pars on 1 and 2 Andrew got into trouble on the 555 yard par 5 third and made a double bogey 7. After pars on 5 & 6. Andrew made a nice 18 footer for birdie on seven and after a par on the 190 yard par 3 eighth, Andrew made a downhill breaking putt on the 500 yard par 5 ninth to get to 1 under par for opening nine. After a routine par on ten, Andrew made another putt of over 20 feet on the 180 yard par 3 eleventh to get to 2 under par. Andrew gave 2 strokes back with bogeys on 13 & 16. Andrew made another breaking putt from over 15 feet on the tough 17th green to get back to 1 under par where he finished after making a par on 18. Jeff Mucciarone was right there also with a birdie on 18 to take second place with an even par score of 72. There were the two best scores at this course in 12 years of tournament competition here. In a three way tie for third were William Byrd, Rick Lewis, and Brian Boyle with excellent scores of 76. In the Net Division A competition, Brian Boyle showed that the Blackstone National and South Shore combination suites his game. Brian finished in a tie for first place at the previous event at B.N., and took first @ SSCC with a 3 under par net score of 69 to win by 1 stroke over Andrew S. In the Net Division B competition, B.A.G.S.' veteran, Mike Robinson, had his best result of the year. Mike shot a gross score of 86 his lowest in B.A.G.S.' competition in over a year. Mike's 40 points or 4 under par net was good for a healthy margin of 5 points over the next closest competitors: Dave MacTavish and Jim Doughty.
The morning showers cleared out smartly for the noon time start at Blackstone National on Thursday, July 29. The afternoon was ideal for golf with very low humidity. The group started on the 10th tee. Jeff Mucciarone was again in fine form and had three consecutive birdies starting at 17, his eight hole,18 and 1 on the front side, to get it to 1 under par on the round. Jeff made pars on 2- 4, and after a bogey on the short 346 yard par 4 fifth hole was back to even par. Jeff had a disappointing finish playing the last 4 holes in 2 over par, but his 74 was still the best on the day by 4 strokes. Leigh MacKay, back in B.A.G.S. after being away for a couple of years, finished in a three way tie for second with Rich Sgarzi and Brian Boyle all in with 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Gary Dupuis, Ron Violette, and Brian Boyle all played some excellent golf, and finished in a tie for first with 2 under par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, Al Latour was the best. Al was in with 39 points 1 better than: Carlton Smith, Dick Malo, and Brian Bakke who had his best result this year.
The persistent humidity dropped off for the Monday, July 26 event at Norfolk GC. The course was in its usual superb condition with perfect fairways and tees and smooth fast greens that were in mint condition. Chris Kreilkamp more than took advantage of the excellent putting surfaces, he thrived. Chris had an amazing total of 21 putts. He only hit 5 greens in regulation, and 1 putted 4 of them. He got up and down for par on 9 of the 13 greens he missed in regulation, and had 5 birdies, 3 bogeys, 1 double bogey and the rest pars for an even par score of 70. Typical of his day was a putt from off the green on the toughest green to make putts, the upside down saucer shaped green on 4th & 13th hole. Chris was maybe 30 feet away from the hole playing as his 13th and made the putt for birdie. Chris came to 17 at 1 over par and made a 25 footer for birdie. Needing a par to shoot 70, Chris missed the 185 yard par 3 finishing hole to the right and got up and down for par with a clutch putt.. Well done, Chris! Jeff Mucciarone was right there after 16 at 1 over par, but made bogeys on 17 & 18 for a 73. Chris K. easily won the Net Division with a net 63 for an 8 stroke margin over Rick Sprague who played with Chris and was only 1 point behind Chris after making his second gross birdie on the day on 14 for 4 points..
The weather stayed warm and humid for the Saturday, July 24 event at Passaconaway. The course was in great condition and there were many fine scores. Andrew Seefield, the newest member of B.A.G.S., in his first trip over this links style layout, played some superb golf. Andrew showed off both his length and accuracy off the tee and a fine short game. Andrew shot an even par 35 on the long - 3500 yard opening nine, and then had 3 birdies on the shorter 3250 yard second nine to post a fine 3 under par 68. Well done, Andrew! Rick Lewis shot even par 71 the first time we played here in May and was the hottest player in B.A.G.S. having shot even par the previous weekend at Atlantic. Rick made the turn at even par and got it to 1 under with a three foot birdie putt on the 344 yard par 4 eleventh. Rick was just off the green in 2 on the 515 yard par 5 fourteenth and only made par, and his birdie putts on 17 and 18 just missed going in. Rick had to settle for an even par score of 71. Johnathan Law and Bob Drury also played some excellent golf and were both in with 73's. Bob made a great comeback never giving up, in the true B.A.G.S.' competive style, by shooting 2 under par 33 on the second nine. In the Net Division A competition, Andrew S. won the by 1 point over Rick L. Scott Hanlon played well once again and took third position with a 4 under par net score. In the Net Division B competition, Mike O'Malley was the man. Mike hadn't broken 100 in any previous B.A.G.S.' event this year. But he loves this course, and for the second time in a B.A.G.S.' event, with a separation of 6 years, Mike accumulated 45 points and shot a gross score of 85. This is even more incredible considering the fact that Mike started the round with an 8 for 0 points and also made a triple bogey on the par 3 thirteenth for 0 points. So in effect, Mike had 45 points on 16 holes an average of almost 3 points a hole. Mike had 2 gross birdies on the round. 1 for a net eagle 4 points and another for a net albatross - 5 points. Well back in second, but still with 40 points was Tom Sawyer, who had his best result after retuning to B.A.G.S.' competition after a long absence. The trio of: Allan McCue, Bud McGrath, and John McGilley tied for fourth with 38 points.
The warm and muggy weather continued for the Wednesday, July 21 event at New England. The course was in super condition with excellent greens. Jeff Mucciarone was the low gross winner with a 6 over par 77. Just 2 behind was David Gibson who finished strongly playing his last 6 holes in 1 under par for a 79. In the Net Division event from the shorter Black tees, Ted Van Sickle was magnificent. On the opening nine holes, which started on 10, Ted shot a 4 over par gross score of 39 with 2 gross birdies and 3 gross pars good for an incredible 26 stableford points after nine holes. Ted started his second nine holes on 1 & 2 with a bogey and then a double, and then made a nice par the third for another 3 points hole. Ted played 4-7 his 13th - 16th holes in net par. Ted made gross pars on 8 for net birdie and the 9th for net eagl for 7 more points for a massive 45 points and a spot in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book. David Gibson, Ed Fitzhenry, and Howard Fox all played well and shot even par net, but were 9 strokes to the rear of Ted.
It was a warm and windy day for the Saturday, July 17 event at Atlantic. Rick Lewis was as warm as the 90 degree temperature on the opening nine. Rick made birdies on 4 of the first 6 holes. Rick might have been 4 under par had he not 3-putted the 366 yard par 4 fifth. Rick's other bogey was on the tough 428 yard par 4 ninth that played into a stiff breeze. Rick made the turn at 2 under par 34. Rick was still at 2 under par after a chip-in birdie from an impossible spot over the green on the 505 yard par 5 fourteenth that hit the flagstick squarely and dropped in. Rick made bogeys on 15 & 16 to go back to even par. Rick 2-putted for par on 17, and nearly chipped in again on 18 from the back of the green with the ball stopping an inch short of the hole for a par and an even par score of 72. This matches the all-time B.A.G.S. best score at this course which has been on the B.A.G.S.' schedule for 10 straight years. In the Net Division A competition, Rick's net score of 3 under par 69 was 1 better than Phil Carlino who played extremely well. John Gibson shot a gross 79, tied for second best on the day, and took third spot in the Net A with a 1 under par net score. In the Net Division B competition, there was a 3 - way tie for first with: Bob Matheson, Buzz Speers, and Bill Ryan all playing well and shooting 1 under par net scores of 71.
The warm weather abated for the Thursday, July 15 event at Olde Scotland Links as a fog bank hung tough, and kept the sun from appearing for most of the round. Johnathan Law played the more difficult second nine in even par 36, and was in at 2 over par 74 to take the low gross win by 2 over Lew Weitzman, who finished with a birdie on the 18th for a 76. Gregg Martin finished with 41 stableford points despite a zero point and 3 other holes in which he made only 1 point with help of 8 gross pars and 1 gross birdie. The birdie on the eighteenth for 4 stableford points was huge as Gregg got the win by a single point over the improved Bill Feeney, who had 8 net birdies on the day. Just another point behind Bill in a 4 way tie for third were: Ted Van Sickle, Ed Fitzhenry, John Cochran, and Lew Weitzman.
It was quite warm and muggy for the Tuesday, July 13 event at Trull Brook. The course was in fine condition with nice greens that rolled well and there were many fine score.. Doug Bray played some solid golf with many fine shots. Doug had 1 bogey and 1 birdie and the rest pars on the opening nine for an even par score of 36. Doug was still at even par after consecutive pars on 10 and 11. A good drive and a nice second shot left Doug just off the front of the green on the 480 yard par 5 twelfth. This sloping green from back to front caused Doug to three-putt once he got on for a bogey 6. Doug made par on the short 340 yard par 4 thirteenth, and made his last bogey on the round on the 355 yard par 4 fourteenth after coming up short of the green on the uphill approach shot. Doug's 2 over par 74 was good for a 2 shot win over Brian Boyle who closed in fine fashion with a 1 over par 37 on the second nine. In the Net Division competition., Ted Scholnick had his best gross score in 4 years with a fine 85. Ted shared first place with Nate Liskov, who shot a superb 5 over par 77 gross. Both players were tied with 43 stableford points or 7 under par net. Nick Spada played some excellent golf, and was in with a gross 78 for 42 points for third position.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Green Meadow the "Jungle Course" for the Saturday, July 10 event. Storm clouds were all around, but nothing serious interrupted play. Jeff Mucciarone got off to a very fine start with pars on the first 8 holes before making a nice 10 footer for birdie on the 515 yard par 5 ninth. More steady play followed as Jeff showed off a superlative short game getting up and down for pars whenever he missed a green. Jeff matched the card for pars all the way through sixteen. A pushed drive on the long 450 yard par 4 seventeenth lead to a missed green and Jeff failed to get up and down for par for the first time on the day. On the 531 yard par 5 finishing hole Jeff needed par to get another entry into the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for an even par or better score. Jeff was in good position after his second short and had only 85 yard to the green which is at the top of the hill on a plateau. Jeff came up short and was just off the green, but about 30 feet short of the hole. Keeping a familiar theme going, Jeff putted from off the green to about 4 feet short and made the putt for an even par score of 72 on this 6900 yard layout. Johnathan Law and recent new member, Ivan Heller, finished in a tie for second with 77's. In the Net Division A competition, Carl Umpleby was the best. Carl shot a superb 1 over par gross score of 37 on the opening nine for 21 stableford points. Carl shot 41 on the second nine and his 78 was his first sub-80 score in his second year as a B.A.G.S.' member. Well done, Carl! Jeff Mucciarone took second with a 1 under par net score. Also playing well and finishing in a tie for third with even par net scores were: Mark DelVecchio and Laurence Barden. In the Net Division B competition from the White tee markers, there was a three way tie for first. Mike Donlon, Mark Jezowski, and Tony Carmona all had excellent rounds, and finished at 3 under par net. John Sawyer and Jim Doughty also played well and were tied for fourth with 2 under par net scores.
Sandy Burr was in nice condition for the Saturday July 3 event. The weather was perfect with moderate humidity and cooling breezes. Rick Lewis, the Cape Cod Spring Champion, proved once again that he's the man to beat whenever he tees it up in a B.A.G.S.' event. Rick started with a birdie on the opening par 5 and made just 2 bogeys and the rest pars on the opening nine for 1 over par 37. Rick made a bogey 4 on the 190 yard par 3 tenth hole, and then matched the card the final 8 holes for another 37. Rick's gross score of 74 was 2 better than Jeff Lewandowski who shot even par 36 on the opening nine. In the Net Division A competition, Rick Sprague had a strong finish with a gross score of 4 over par 40 on the closing nine good for 20 stableford points for a total of 38 on the day to just beat the above mentioned Rick Lewis by 1 point. Steve Preble played some fine golf, and was in with a gross score of 80 for an even par net score to finish in a tie for third with Jeff L. In the Net Division B competition, Mike Donlon was on fire on the Sandy Burr second nine. After a very mediocre starting nine with just 15 points, Mike turned it around starting with a par on ten. Mike made a bogeys on 11 & 12 and then made pars on 14 & 15 and after a bogey 16, finished in spectacular style with back to back birdies on the 511 yard par 5 seventeenth and the uphill 391 yard par 4 closing hole both for net eagles. Paul Kudarauskas and Scott Hanlon both played well and finished in a tie for second at 1 under par net.
It was a perfect summer day for golf for the Thursday, July 1 event at Stow Acres - North course. It was more like early September with the temperature in the mid-70's and very low humidity. Johnathan Law played well on the opening nine with 2 birdies and an even par score of 36. Johnathan made a very good par on the 420 yard par 4 eleventh hole after a pushed drive ended well right. Johnathan hit an 8 iron over the trees and onto the green from a tough spot from about 160 yards out. A missed green lead to a bogey on 11. Johnathan made a par on the short par 5 12th, but made a bogey on the 185 par 3 thirteenth with a 3- putt. A double bogey 6 on the sharp dogleg left after a missed green and 3 - putt pushed J.L. to 4 over on the round. After a par on the 407 yard par 4 fifteenth, J.L. made a bogey on the 191 yard par 3 sixteenth after a pulled tee shot missed the green left. J.L. got up and down for a nice par on the 403 yard par 4 seventeenth after his approach shot ran over the green into the back rough. A nice third shot to a little over 8 feet on the long 550 yard par 5 finishing hole got J.L. a chance for birdie on which he converted for a fine 4 over par score of 76. Jeff Mucciarone was right there for 11 holes at just 1 over par, but Jeff could only make 2 more pars on the closing 7 holes, and finished 2 behind with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Wayne Morrison played well for the second straight event with a gross score of 80. His even par net score of 72 got him a tie for first with Johnathan. Scott Chizzo played well enough to take third position with a 1 over par net score. In the Net Division B competition, new member this year, Gregg Martin, was the best. Gregg came in with 39 stableford points or 3 under par net to win by 2 points over the improved Jack Farrell who just recently came in second at Waverly Oaks. Mike Harney showed some good signs that he's ready to win as he finished in a tie for third with the steady performer Ted Van Sickle with an even par net score.
B.A.G.S.' traveled to Olde Scotland Links for the annual Member/Member-Guest 2- person team event on Saturday, June 26. The course was in great condition, and the greens rolled true. The team of Jeff Mucciarone-Glenn Watson started with a bogey on the 433 yard par 4 opening hole, and then played the rest of the way in 6 under par with the aid of 6 birdies for a score of 5 under par 67, for the best result in the history of this event. Well back in second place with a very respectable score of 1 under par 71 was the team of Father - Rick Kelly and son - Bryan. The Net results were also outstanding. Husband and Wife team - Holger and Rosi Stoltze proved to be a great team with each player contributing. They combined for an incredible 14 net eagles, 1 net albatross and net pars on 2 of the other holes and 1 zero point hole on 15, for 50 stableford points or 14 under par net. The team of Tony Beckwith - John Kirby didn't know each before the event, but formed a superb team. They supported each other the whole way with both players making key contributions when the other was in trouble. Tony made a key par on the 154 yard par 3 eighth when John was out of the hole, and John made a key par on 18 when Tony was struggling. Their total of 49 points would have won many of these events in the past. The team of Tom Simard-Tom Perkins also played extremely well. Tom Simard struggled the previous weekend at River Bend, but having a partner seemed to settle him into good swing thoughts and a hot putter helped as Tom shot even par gross on the opening nine and the team had a massive total of 27 points. Tom shot a gross 40 on the second nine and the team had 20 more points to take third position in the overall tournament.
It turned warm for the Thursday, June 24 event at Scottish Highlands. The temperature was well into the 90's, and the thunderstorms held off until after play was competed. Mark Lyons was a very late entry into his first event of the year, and it paid off royally. We all started on the 10th hole, and Mark used this nine as his warm up round shooting 3 over par 38. Mark made a nice birdie on the 368 yard 1st hole his 10th to get him off to a good start, and finished with a rush with consecutive birdies on 17 and 18 for 1 over par 37 and a total of 75. This was 1 better than Jeff Mucciarone. Wayne Morrison took third with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Dan Chicoine, from nearby Pelham, used all his home course knowledge to finally win on his home course after many tries. Dan shot a 2 over par 38 on his second nine good for an astounding 23 stableford points to just nip the above mentioned Mark Lyons by 1 stableford point. Nick Spada played a superlative round with a gross score of 80, and took third spot with a 39 points or 3 under par net. In the Net Division B competition, Ted Scholnick was the best, and got his first win on the season. Ted's net score of 1 under par 70 was just good enough to beat Jim Kelly by 1 point.
Waverly Oaks was in great condition for the Monday, June 21 event. It was a perfect day for golf on the first day of summer with a cloudless sky and very low humidity. Long hitting Orin Mayers put it all together on this day. Orin got it to just 2 over par on the day with a birdie on the 372 yard par 4 eleventh hole, his second birdie of the round. After a par on 12 and a bogey on the 13th, Orin was at 3 over par. Orin got on the 449 par 4 fifteenth with the "punch bowl" green in 2, but faced a downhill, breaking putt of about 20 feet. The putt just caught the edge of the hole with a lot of speed but somehow dropped in for birdie. Orin gave that back on the next hole, the long 606 yard par 5 sixteenth, when he couldn't get up and down for par from just off the green. Orin pared in from there for a fine 3 over par 75. Jeff Mucciarone also played well, and was just 1 stroke behind with a 76. Clyde Rowells had his best result in his first year as a B.A.G.S.' member. Clyde shot a superb 6 over 77 and took third position. In the Net Division A competition, the above mentioned Orin was a two stroke winner over Clyde Rowells. David Gibson and the steady Chris Kreilkamp finished in a tie for third. In the Net Division B competition, Ron Violette was in compete control of this event. Ron was just 2 over par after 10 holes and had amassed an incredible 25 points to that point. Ron stayed strong through the 17th with a nice par on the uphill all carry 200 yard par 3. Ron finished with a double bogey on the short 333 yard eighteenth, but with a stroke on this hole it was still worth 1 stableford point. Ron' total of 43 stableford points was good for a 4 point victory over Jack Farrell, who had his best result this year. Buzz Speers, the winner at Acushnet River Valley played well again, and took third with 38 points or 2 under par net.
It was breezy but nice for the Saturday June 19 event at River Bend. The temperature was well into the 80's under brilliant sunshine and comfortable humidity levels with swirling winds. Mark Dwyer was back in the competition after an absence of several weeks. Mark was just 2 over for the round until a double bogey 6 on the 412 yard par 4 twelfth hole. This let Joe Pimental back into the tournament as Joe picked up 3 stokes on Mark on this hole with a nice birdie 3. Mark got the lead back with a par on the long 572 yard par 5 sixteenth, but Joe came back to tie Mark with a birdie on the 576 yard par 5 finishing hole. Mark and Joe ended up with 77's for the low gross title. Rick Lewis and Jeff Mucciarone finished 1 stroke behind with 78's. In the Net Division A competition, Rey LeMaine was the winner. Rey shot a fine gross score of 80 good for 36 stableford points or even par net. In the Net Division B competition, there was a tie for first place. Holger Stoltze was hot and cold in same round and demonstrated the beauty of the stableford scoring system. Holger had 4 zero point holes including the opening 2 holes, yet still came in with 38 stableford points with the help of 4 gross pars and 1 gross birdie on the other 14 holes. Chad Fisher continued his strong play from Norton CC where he was the winner, and finished in a tie for first with Holger with 38 points. Bill Feingold also played well, and took third position with a 1 under par net score.
Acushnet River Valley was in nice condition for Saturday, June 12 event. Jeff Mucciarone holds the B.A.G.S' course record here with a 68, and he's the favorite any time he plays here. Jeff played the first 8 holes in 1 under par with back to back birdies on 4 & 5 before making a double bogey on the long 575 yard par 5 ninth for a 37. Jeff was still at 1 over par after consecutive pars on 10-12. Jeff had 2 bogeys coming in and all the rest pars for a 3 over total of 75.Chris Kreilkamp, who's been struggling lately, was on fire for the first 12 holes. Chris birdied 4 of the first 12 holes, and was the leader in the tournament by 2 strokes over Jeff at 1 under par after his 4th birdie on the day at the 536 yard par 5 twelfth after making bogeys on 10 & 11. A poor tee shot on the long 473 yard par 4 thirteenth lead to a double bogey 6, and three consecutive bogeys followed on: 14, 15 & 16. A nice tee shot to within 12 feet got Chris a par on the 190 yard par 3 seventeenth. Chris finished this magical round in good fashion with a par on the 407 yard par finishing hole for a fine 4 over par 76. Well done, Chris!. In the Net Division A competition, Chris was a three point winner over Ron Violette who shot a very nice gross score of 82. In the Net Division B competition, Buzz Speers played superbly. Buzz broke 80 for only the second time in now his 4th season as a B.A.G.S.' member with a fine 6 over par 78. Buzz had an incredible 8 net birdies and 1 net eagle for a massive total of 44 stableford points despite having a zero point hole. Paul Kudarauskas might have won on any other day. Paul was incredibly consistent all day with no zero point holes, 1 gross birdie good for a net eagle on the 322 yard par 4 third, and 6 net birdies for 42 stableford points secured him second place. Larry Mintzer played well, but was 4 points behind Paul for third position.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Ledgemont CC for the Wednesday, June 9 event. This is superb private club with many fine holes and excellent playing conditions. All who played here in this event were impressed with the condition of the fairways, tees, and the lightning fast putting greens. Johnathan Law played the first 10 holes in 1 over par which included a 1 -putt eagle 3 on the 465 yard uphill par 5 eighth hole. Johnathan was still at just 2 over par after getting up and down for par on the 177 yard par 3 fifteenth. However, Johnathan finished with 3 consecutive bogeys on the tough three finishing holes 16-18. All par fours over 410 yards. Jonathan's 5 over par 76 was 2 better the Jeff Mucciarone, who took second place with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Scott Chizzo, Bob Gillis, and Scott Perry finished in a tie for first with 2 under par net scores of 69. Jim Foehr was the best in the Net Division B competition with a 2 under par net score of 69.
Haverhill CC was in excellent condition for Monday, June 5 event. The putting greens were in pristine condition for the 8:00 shotgun start and while not as fast as we have experienced in past events, they rolled exceptionally well. Jeff Mucciarone got his second consecutive win with a fine 3 birdie round and a score of 3 over par 73. Glenn Watson played a solid round, and was just 2 behind Jeff with a smooth 75. Doug Bray was right there also, but missed the green on the 150 yard par 3 tenth hole his second to last hole in the shotgun start, and made a double bogey 5 after chipping short and then long to go to 5 over, Doug competed his round with a bogey 5 on the 380 yard par 4 dogleg right eleventh to shoot a 76. In the Net Division A competition, Dan Butler played his best round so far as a first year member of B.A.G.S. Dan shot a very fine gross score of 81 good for 39 stableford points or 3 under par net and finished in a tie for first place with another new member thus year, Jason Kiggen, who shot a superb gross score of 78. Neil Denenberg played extremely well, and despite 2 zero points holes was still able to amass 38 stableford points to take third position. The above mentioned Doug Bray took fourth spot. Lew Weitzman aced the 137 yard fourth hole, and will receive a free membership for 2011 season. Congratulations, Lew! In the Net Division B competition, Scott Hanlon, back in B.A.G.S. after several years away, had his best result of the season. Scott had two gross birdies on the card for 4 point net eagles, and shot a fine gross score of 84. Scott's 39 points or 3 under par net was good for a 3 point win over Andrew Leonard and Rich Hosegood.
The weather turned warm and muggy for the Saturday, June 5 event at Braintree Municipal, and it felt more like mid-July or August than early June. Jeff Mucciarone was back in top form for this event and shot a fine even par score of 72 and got him yet another entry into the B.A.G.S. Record Book for an even par score or better in an event. Bob Heenan stayed right with Jeff through 11 holes at even par. However, Bob made a double bogey 6 on the tough 430 yard par 4 eleventh to fall 1 behind Jeff. Bob fell two behind after a par to Jeff's birdie on 15, and Bob finished with a bogey on the short-ish 334 yard par 4 finishing hole for a 75. Johnathan Law took third position with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Chris Kreilkamp was the best. Chris shot a fine gross score of 79 and despite a bogey, bogey finish after a lightning warning required the group to leave the course for 45 minutes and disrupted the rhythm of his round, Chris was still 2 strokes better than Bob Heenan and Richard Tenby. In the Net Division B competition, Dennis Callahan made it look easy. Now in his 19th year of B.A.G.S.' competition, Dennis shot a fine gross score of 41 on the opening nine good for 21 stableford points. Dennis made his first double bogey on the day on the 510 yard par 5 tenth after losing his tee shot in the right hazard, but made a net par on the tough 430 yard par 4 eleventh and hit the green and made a par net birdie on the 185 yard par 3 twelfth. Net pars followed on 13 & 14. Dennis made a double bogey on 15 after an unfortunate double hit, but settled down and made pars on the three finishing holes all for net birdies for a total of 20 points on the closing nine. Dennis' total of 41 points was 3 better than the improved Paul Kudarauskas and John Sawyer, who had his best result so far this year as they finished in joint second. Rosi Stoltze had her best finish this year with 35 points to finish alone in fourth.
It was a perfect June day for golf for the Wednesday, June 2 event at Wayland. The temperature was right around 80 with gentle breezes on a bright sunny day. As is usually the case at this short layout, there were many fine scores. Mauricio Otero continued his superlative play so far this year with another fine round at Wayland. Mauricio shot an even par 34 on the opening nine with the help of a 1 putt eagle 3 on the 260 yard par 4 seventh. Mauricio shot a 3 over par 39 on the closing nine for a 73. This was just enough to win the low gross title over Rey LeMaine and Jeff Mucciaone who both finished with 74's. Orin Mayers also played well, and took 4th spot with a 76. In the Net competition, Rey LeMaine's net 66 was 1 better than Dick Malo, who played well once again, and Nate Liskov, who shot a fine gross score of 78. Chris Kreilkamp got stronger as the round progressed, and shot a 38 gross on the second nine to tie the above mentioned Mauricio for fourth in the net at 2 under par 68.
Passaconaway CC was in fabulous condition for the Saturday, May 29 event. This is one of the best public courses we play all year, and there were many fine scores. The opening nine is 3570 yards from all the way back, and while some of the tees were up, the opening nine still played long. Rick Lewis made pars on the opening 4 holes before making his first birdie on the day at the 590 yard par 5 fifth hole. Rick hit two nice shots on the 478 yard par 4 sixth hole, and made the putt for the only birdie on the day at this long par 4. Rick hit a poor drive on the 473 yard par 4 seventh hole, but still reached the front of the green from about 250 yards out, but three putted for bogey. Rick made pars on 8 & 9 for a 1 under par 9 hole score. After a par on 10, Rick got it to 2 under par with a fine 9 foot birdie putt on the 344 yard par 4 eleventh. Rick 3 - putted on twelve from 30 feet to lose 1 stroke to par. Rick then made pars on holes 12 - 15 to stay at 1 under par. On the short 340 yard par 4 sixteenth, Rick came up short on his approach, and made a bogey out of the front bunker. Pars on 17 & 18 got Rick in at even par 71 and his second entry into the B.A.G.S.' Record Book. Steve Caputo had his best showing of the year with a 2 birdie round, and was in a tie for second at 3 over 74 with 4- time B.A.G.S.' club champion, Jeff Mucciarone, who was making his first appearance in the a B.A.G.S.' event this year after overcoming some shoulder problems. In the Net Division A competition, Rick Lewis was a 2 stroke winner over Steve Caputo. Tom Simard and Dan Chicoine also played exceptionally well, and they tied for third position with 1 under par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, Paul Kudarauskas and Johnnie Balfour both played extremely well. Paul despite having a zero point hole still amassed 40 stableford points with help of 9 net birdies. Johnnie's gross score of 96 was his best in a B.A.G.S.' event by an astounding 11 shots and was good for 40 stableford points and a tie for first place. Bud McGrath had a fine day also. Bud started off with zero on the first hole and then caught fire with 20 points on the next 8 with gross birdies on both par 3's. Bud's total of 38 points got third spot by 1 point over Holger Stoltze and the long hitting Ray Fearnley.
South Shore CC was in superb condition for the Saturday, May 22 event with fast, smooth, greens. The weather was delightful also with a bright sunny sky and the temperature right around 75 degrees. Rick Lewis got off to a quick start with a birdie on the short, uphill 303 yard par 4 first hole with a tricky green, and although he made a double bogey on the 555 yard par 5 third hole, finished the opening nine at 2 over par 38. Rick had 4 bogeys and the rest pars on the second nine for a 40. This was a convincing win, however, as the rest of the field struggled, and no one else broke 80. Dan Taylor, a new member this year, in just his second B.A.G.S.' event, took second place with an 81. In the Net Division A competition, Dan's net score of even par 72 was 2 better than Richard Tenby and the above mentioned Rick Lewis. In the Net Division B competition, Paul Kudarauskas was the best with a 1 under par net score. 2 strokes back in a three way tie for third were: Bob Steward, Ted Van Sickle, and Tony Carmona.
After a rainy, cool, Wednesday the storm system moved out, and it was a perfect May day with the temperature in the mid-70's for the Thursday, May 20 event at Acushnet River Valley. John McNeill had never played this superb public course before, but that didn't matter too much. John hit 12 of 14 fairways, and while his only birdie came on the short 322 yard par 4 third hole, John had many looks at birdie on greens that were still recovering from spring aeration. John played the opening nine in two over par 38. John's only bogey on the outer nine was on the 473 yard par 4 thirteenth that played closer to 500 yards into the wind. There was only 1 par on the day on this hole that played nearly as long as the previous hole the 536 yard par 5 twelfth, which played downwind. John's 3 over par 75 was the best by 5 strokes. Rich Bracker was alone in second with an 80. In the Net competition, George Rosner at even par net was also an easy winner. In the Net Division B competition, Peter Elliott, who has struggled so far this season, really got it going. Peter shot 45 on the opening nine good for 19 stableford points or 1 under par net. On the second nine, Peter was solid again with another 45 for another 19 points. Peter's 2 under par net score was just enough to beat: Dave Izzo, Stan Balon, and Ed Sullivan, who finished at 1 under net.
B.A.G.S. traveled to River Bend CC for the Saturday, May 15 event. The course played about as tough as it could on the opening nine with holes 5, 6 and 7 playing directly into some gusty breezes. Johnathan Law got off to a fabulous start. Holes # 1 and #2 played downwind and Johnathan took full advantage of this. Johnathan knocked his approach shot from an old divot on the 370 yard opening hole to within 4 feet from the hole and made birdie. On the 499 yard par 5 second hole, Johnathan hit a 5 iron second shot to 12 feet and drained the putt for an eagle 3. Johnathan came to the 400 yard par 4 ninth at 1 over par after consecutive bogeys on 7 and 8. On nine, J. Law had just a 9 iron in, which he hit to within 3 feet and made the birdie for an even par score of 35. On the 412 yard tenth hole, J.L. had only had about 80 yards to the hole, and hit it to 4 feet, but missed what would have been the only birdie on the day at 10. J.L. matched the card for pars on 11-13 before making his only double bogey on the 207 yard par 3 fourteenth and a bogey on the tight 393 yard par 4 fifteenth to go to 3 over on the round. J.L. made a nice par on the 197 yard par 3 seventeenth and nearly got birdie on the 576 yard par 5 finishing hole when his 3 footer just missed. J.L.'s 3 over par 74 was just enough to get the win over Rick Lewis who came in a with fine 75 on this windy day. Rick, the Cape Cod Champion, was even with J.L. after making a par on the 207 yard par 3 fourteenth, but lost the lead with a double on the tight 393 yard par 4 fifteenth. Joe Pimental in his first B.A.G.S.' event of the season, took third with a 79. In the Net Division A competition, the above mentioned Rick L. and Johnathan L. finished in a tie for first with even par net scores. Joe P. took third. Bob Oteri, in his first event as a B.A.G.S.' member, played well and took 4th spot. In the Net Division B competition, new member this year, Bill Feingold and veteran B.A.G.S.' member, Bob Steward both played exceptionally well and finished in a tie for first with 3 under par net scores. The trio of Paul Kudarauskas, Chris Hulswit, and John Orciani all played well and had even par net scores to tie for third.
After a breezy and very cold morning, it warmed up into the upper 50's for the afternoon shotgun start at Spring Valley CC on Monday, May 10. The course was in ideal condition with pristine fairways, and greens that were smooth and rated around medium fast, so putts got to the hole but didn't race past. Glenn Watson's playing much more this year, than last, and some of the consistency and confident play has returned as well. Glenn played the opening nine in just 2 over par which included a birdie on the 515 yard par 5 fifth hole. Glenn then matched the card for pars on the 10-14. Glenn made a bogey on the short 365 yard par 4 fifteenth after a nice drive and an approach shot then ended up on the upper tier of the green with hole near the front and a subsequent three putt. Glenn got up and down for par on the 210 yard par 3 sixteenth, but made his second bogey on this nine on the 522 yard par 5 seventeenth after driving left and having to punch out from under a tree branch. A great second shot on the 377 yard par 4 finishing hole left Glenn about 8 feet below the hole and his putt dove into the hole for a birdie and a score of 1 over par 37 and a total of 75. 4 strokes back in second place was new member this year, Mauricio Otero, the B.A.G.S.' version of the "merry Mex". Mauricio had no birdies, but had 11 pars and no doubles for a 79. In the Net Division A competition, the previously mentioned Glenn W. and Mauricio tied for first with net scores of 4 under par 68. Glenn McIntyre played a solid round with a gross 85, and with 14 strokes was in alone in the third spot with a net 71. Clyde Rowells and Rey LeMaine shared 4th position with net scores of 74. In the Net Division B competition, Bob Jarchow was the man. Bob loved the greens and made nearly every putt he needed and came in with a superb gross score of 80. Bob had 11 gross pars, and on the net side an incredible 9 net birdies. Bob's total of 42 stableford points was good for a 2 point win over Joe Burns. Joe, in his first start as a B.A.G.S.' member, would have been a winner on any other day. Joe shot a very fine gross score of 84, and had a nice birdie on the difficult 503 yard par 5 seventeenth. Ralph Faiola played well again and took third spot with a 2 under par net score of 70. Ted Van Sickle and Gary Carlin finished tied for 4th with net scores of 1 over par.
The fine weather from the weekend continued for the Wednesday, May 5 event at Triggs Memorial. The greens hadn't recovered fully from recent aeration and most putts were an adventure and yet there were several brilliant scores. John McNeill loves this Donald Ross vintage layout, and John, now in his 18th year as a B.A.G.S.' member, proved that again in this event. Holes 1 -3 are the toughest stretch on the course with par 4's all over 400 yards. John made pars 1 & 2, but made double on the 457 yard third. Back to back birdies on 5 & 6 got John back to even par. John matched the card on holes 7-9 and finished with even par 35 after nine. After a par on ten, John got his third birdie on the short 350 yard par 4 eleventh. John was still at 1 under for the round before making a bogey on the short, dogleg left, sixteenth. Despite the bumpy greens, John finished with consecutive birdies on the 412 yard par 4 seventeenth, and 410 yard par 4 finishing hole for a fine 2 under par 70. This got John yet another entry into the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for even par of better scores in a B.A.G.S.' event. No one else in the field was able to break 80. In the Net Division A competition, John's net score of 70 was 1 better than the trio of: Dennis Flis, Scott Perry, and Peter Ross. In the Net Division B competition, new member this year, John Orciani found the course very agreeable to his game. John had two net eagles on the day along with 7 net birdies for a massive total of 43 stableford points. Well back in second was Richard Hosegood who had his best result so far in his first season in B.A.G.S with a 2 under par net score of 70. Another new member, Gregg Martin was in at net 71, and took third.
It was an unbelievably nice weekend for golf on Cape Cod for the 36 - hole Championship on the weekend of May 1 & 2. With the temperature well into the 70's for both days and just a light sea breeze, it was ideal for golf. The course was in fine condition with the greens very firm and fast on downhill putts. Rick Lewis played extremely well on Saturday with a fine 3 over 75. Rick had plenty of birdie opportunities, and had at least 4 putts that hit the edge of the hole and didn't drop. Rick's round was even more impressive when consideration is given to the fact that the next best score was a 79 by Glenn Watson. On Sunday, it was not quite as easy for Rick. Rick played the first 6 holes in 6 over par and with bogeys on 8 & 9, played the opening nine in 8 over par. Rick settled down on holes that had given him trouble in the past and played the stretch of 10 - 15 in even par, and with a closing par on 18, finished the second nine with a 3 over par 39 for 83 total. The closest pursuer from Saturday, Glenn Watson, was just 3 over par after a nice par on the 442 yard par 4 eighth, and was now even with Rick in the tournament . Glenn hit a superb tee shot on the 389 yard par 4 ninth, and only had about 136 yards in. A miss hit wedge was sent high in the air and disappeared in the front bunker. After a search of the bunker which involved sifting through the soft sand and finding three other balls, Glenn finally found his ball. Instead of taking an unplayable and dropping in the bunker for 1 stroke penalty, Glenn decided to try to play the buried ball out of the sand. It took him 4 to get out and 3 more putts lead to a score of 9 on the hole which killed his chances in the low gross. Doug Bray and Philip Collier were in a tie for second with identical scores of 81-80, and finished 3 behind Rick. In the Net Division A competition, the above mentioned Glenn Watson and Rick Lewis were the leaders after Saturday's opening round. While the 9 on #9 cost Glenn any chance of winning the low gross, in stableford scoring it was a zero point hole and not as damaging. Glenn's net score on Saturday was a 71 and on Sunday a 75. Doug Bray charged from 3 strokes behind to catch Glenn on Sunday with a weekend net score of 74-72. Rick Lewis fell into a tie for third with Carl Umpleby who played very consistently well with net scores of 75 both days. Dave Truesdell was the story of the day, however. Dave changed his strategy on Sunday after a day of frustration on Saturday and kept the driver in his bag and went out and shot the best round on Sunday with a 3 over par 75. This got him first low gross sweep and first net A sweep on Sunday. In the Net Division B competition, Scott Reese was dominant. Scott shot 1 under par net on Saturday and played even better on Sunday with a net score of 69. Dick Malo was easily the best of the rest. Dick was the only other Net B contender that played better on Sunday other than Scott. Dick improved from net 73 on Saturday to 1 under par net on Sunday and finished 4 behind Scott. Bob Adkisson had another fine event and took third position with 72-77. Saturday leader, Neil Denenberg, who shot a net 70, just didn't have it on Sunday and fell back into 4th position. Tony Carmona, just 2 strokes behind Neil on Saturday, also couldn't keep it going and finished 5th.
The weather co-operated for the Monday, April 28 event at Ferncroft CC. Instead of the cool and damp conditions which had been in the forecast, the day turned out quite mild and partly sunny. Ted Van Sickle kept his fine early season form, and took the Net Division Competition with an even par net score of 72. This was Ted's third victory. Well done, Ted! Andrew Leonard held his round together with a 2 over par net score on a day when high scores were the norm on these fast greens with plenty of slope. Carl Umpleby also played well and was alone in third with a 3 over par net score. After a March of record rainfall and with several holes underwater for an extended period, Sandy Burr was not in the best of shape, to put it kindly, for the Saturday, April 24 event. The weather was perfect for the event with a cloudless sky and the temperature right around 68 degrees. All the holes were open for play, but the bunkers still had debris in them and had not been raked. Johnathan Law got off to nice start and played the opening 9 holes in 1 over par 37. Johnathan got up and down from just off the green on the 185 yard par 3 tenth for par and did the same for birdie on the 450 yard par 5 eleventh to get back to even. After a par on 12, Johnathan sunk a 20 footer for birdie on the par 3 thirteenth to get to 1 under par. A poor drive well to the left lead to a double bogey on 14. John made pars on 15, 16 ,& 17. John hit a nice drive right down the center of fairway on 18, but missed the green short, and couldn't get up and down and made a bogey and finished at 2 over par 74. Jay Leonard in his first time out in a B.A.G.S.' event this season played well, and finished in a tie for second with Lew Weitzman, who had his best performance of the season, with 5 over par 77's. In the Net Division A competition, Lew Weitzman was one stroke better than J. Law with a two under par net score of 70. Glenn McIntyre played a rock solid round with no zero point holes, and was in with an even par net score which gave him third position. Doug Bray shot a gross 79 and took fourth spot in the net division A with a 1 over par net score. The Net Division B competition was very tight. Both Ralph Faiola and Paul Kudarauskas played well and they tied for first spot with 35 points or 1 over par net. Just 2 points behind in a tie for third were Holger Stoltze and Bob Adkisson.
Highland CC, which was new on the schedule this year, proved to be an absolute gem of a course. The 100+ year old course was perfection from tee to green and a joy to play on a perfect spring day with the temperature right around 70 degrees.. Although the yardage was listed at only 6200 yards, this course was no pushover. Bob Heenan took his second straight low gross title despite having to take a 2 stroke penalty on the eighth hole after he let his club drop back into the same bunker he was playing out of, after his ball rolled back in on the shot. Bob's 80 was 1 stroke better than Doug Bray, as they duplicated their finish at Indian Pond CC the previous Wednesday. Another new member, Mauricio Otero, in his second event, took the Net Division title with a 1 over par net score. Net Division B club champion Ron Violette, who improved so much last year, showed some of that form and took second place with a 2 over par net score.
The Pinehills GC event was shifted from Saturday to Monday the 21st, and this turned out to be a much better day for golf. Sunshine prevailed after some morning clouds, and it was near 60 degrees by afternoon. Philip Collier, a new member this year, got his first low gross win in just his second event with a fine 4 over par 76. Johnathan Law played well enough to take second place with a 79. In the Net Division competition, Ted Van Sickle got his second victory of the young season. Ted, who won the season opening event on the Jones course, showed that the Nicklaus II course also suits his game. Ted had an incredible 3 net eagles on the day, and shot a gross score of 87 which included 2 gross birdies. Well done, Ted! Joe Regan might have been the winner on any other day. Joe was in with 39 stableford points or 3 under par and in his best performances in 5 years of B.A.G.S.' competition with a gross score of 85.
It was a fine early spring day for the Wednesday, April 14 event at Indian Pond CC with the afternoon temperature into the low 60's. The course was in great condition with some of the best greens that we play on all year. New member Bob Heenan made his presence felt right away as a strong contender any time he tee's it up in a B.A.G.S.' event. Bob was at even par for the first 8 holes before making a double on the 400 yard par 4 ninth. Bob got it back to 4 over par on the day with a nice birdie on the 380 yard par 4 sixteenth. Bogeys on 17 & 18 pushed Bob to 6 over on the day for a 78. Doug Bray also made birdie on 17, to get him to just 5 over on the round, and 1 stroke behind Bob. Doug missed a par putt on the 180 yard par 3 seventeenth and also made bogey on the 549 yard par 5 eighteenth to finish 1 stroke behind Bob in the low gross competition. In the Net Division A competition, Richard Tenby was the best. Richard shot even par net for 36 points which was even more impressive considering that Richard had two zero point holes with triple bogeys, thus demonstrating the beauty of the stableford scoring system. The above mentioned Bob Heenan and Doug Bray both finished in a tie for second with 35 points. In the Net Division B competition, Dick Malo also had two zero point holes on his card and still managed to win with 36 points. Dick overcame the two zero point holes with 4 net birdies and a net eagle. Paul Kudarauskas showed that he might be back in form this year with a fine 1 over par net score with the help of a strong second nine score of 42 gross, good for 20 stableford points. Mike Harney had his best finish so far in this young season with 33 points or 3 over net, good for a solo third.
A windy and chilly morning became quite nice by afternoon as the sky became cloudless and the brilliant sunshine warmed things up somewhat for the Saturday, April 10 event at Atlantic CC. The wind had its effect on the scoring as well as the fact that the championship (Gold) tee markers for the low gross and Net Division A were set all the way back on every hole and the course played as difficult as it possibly could. Rick Lewis got off to a great start with birdies on two of the first three holes and was just 1 over par after the eighth hole. However, a double bogey on the tough 428 yard ninth which played directly into the wind, pushed Rick to a 3 over score of 39. Rick made four consecutive pars on the second nine before hitting his tee shot into the pond on the 372 yard par 4 fifteenth, and made a double bogey 6. Rick played the final three holes in 1 over par and finished with a 6 over par 78 to win by 1 stroke over Mark Dwyer. In the Net Division A competition, Lew Weitzman and Chris Kreilkamp, both playing in the same foursome, had what turned out to be a battle for first place as both finished with 35 points or 1 over par net. In the Net Division B competition, Pete Kaznoski, in his first B.A.G.S.' event, got off to a great start with a gross birdie on his first hole for a net albatross worth 5 points and really never looked back after this. Ralph Daniels also played exceptionally well with 6 net birdies and no zero point holes for 39 points, and took second place. The ageless Jim Homans, now in his 20th season of B.A.G.S.' competition, shot 1 under par net and finished in a tie for third with Dick Malo and Zecca Fernandes.
B.A.G.S. began its 22nd season of tournament golf on a glorious summer-like day at Pinehills GC on Wednesday, April 7. While it was close to 90 degrees in Boston, it was a perfect 78 degrees in Plymouth. Johnathan Law played some excellent golf from tee to green. Johnathan, who shot 2 over on the opening nine, hit 14 greens in regulation, but struggled on the greens with 34 putts and finished with a 5 over par 77. This was still good enough for the low gross title on the day as no one else in the field broke 80. In the Net Division A competition, Chris Kreilkamp came away with a surprisingly easy victory. Chris made the turn with 19 stableford points or 1 under par net. Chris started the second nine by taking his first zero on the 360 par 4 tenth hole after going from bunker to bunker and then back in again. Chris quickly got those points back by making pars on 11 and 12 for net birdies. Chris made his only other zero point hole on thirteen. Chris made a nice par on the 215 yard par 3 and the 495 yard par 5 fifteenth to get back to even par net and finished with all net pars for a total of 37 points. The above mentioned Johnathan Law took second with 34 points or 2 over par net. In the Net Division B competition off the White tee markers, several of the members had exceptional scores. Ted Van Sickle had 6 net birdies on the day, and made a gross birdie on the par 5 fifteenth for a net albatross and had 41 points with 2 holes to go. However, Ted cooled off and only made 1 more point. Still, his total of 42 points or 6 under par net was good enough to win by 1 point over Buzz Speers who also played extremely well. Buzz shot a gross 80, his second best score ever in 4 years of B.A.G.S.' competition. Ed Sullivan also played well and took third with 40 points. Bob Wilson, a new member this year, took fourth spot with a 2 under par net score.
B.A.G.S. has begun its 22nd season of tournament golf . While other traveling tournament clubs have copied the B.A.G.S.' formula, none have come close to offering the fine mix of tournaments sites, competition, service for the members, and camaraderie that B.A.G.S. has been able to maintain. Because of its strong event schedule and reasonable prices, compared with other traveling tournament clubs, B.A.G.S. has continued its membership growth. This means continued larger fields, stronger competition and larger prize pools for the members. Tee times, tournament results, and the 2010 Official Tournament schedule, along with Order of Merit standings, will be available again this year from the B.A.G.S.' web site: bagsgolf.com. Again, this year, each player’s contribution to the tournament the prize fund will be increased from $1-$3 for most of the events from the entry fees. The details on how points are earned are contained in the Official Tournament Schedule. Please be at the B.A.G.S.' registration desk at least 20 minutes before your tee time and I hour before shotgun starts. B.A.G.S.' local rules allow the removal of stones from bunkers, if they interfere with your ball or stroke, and the lifting and cleaning of an embedded ball, in its own pitch mark, anywhere through the green. Again this year, as a time saver, you may now hit a provisional ball for any type of possible lost ball or ball out of bounds regardless of whether the ball may be lost in water hazard. Summer briefly returned for the Saturday, October 31 event at Indian Pond CC. A strong balmy breeze from the southwest pushed the temperature above 70 by afternoon. Brian Boyle didn't let his triple bogey on the 541 yard par 5 second hole derail his chances of winning. Brian came right back with a birdie on the 355 yard uphill par 4 third hole, and after 4 consecutive pars made another birdie on the 561 par five eighth hole. After a bogey on the 400 yard par 4 ninth, Brian competed the first nine in just 2 over par 38. Brian's third birdie on the day on the 560 yard par 5 tenth hole got him to just 2 over par. Brian made his 4th and final birdie on the 150 yard par 3 thirteenth, and was still at 2 over on the fifteenth tee. However, Brian made bogeys on 15 & 16 to go to 4 over. He finished with a par on 18 for a 76. Rick Lewis was looking for his second straight win, and was right there after birdies on 13 and 14 to get to just 2 over par. However, a 4 putt on 16 lead to a double bogey. A three putt on 17 pushed him to 5 over par. Rick had a short birdie putt on eighteen that would have lead to a tie, but this putt just missed and Rick finished in a tie for second with Jim DiBiase with 77. In the Division A competition, Brian B. was 3 points better than the above mentioned Rick L. and Jim D. along with Doug Bray who played well again and shot a 78 gross. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island invader Al Latour was 1 point better than the trio of: Neil Denenberg, Dave Lee, and Paul Kudarauskas with a 1 over par net score of 73.
B.A.G.S traveled to Halifax CC for the Tuesday, October 27 event. The day started off cool with come light cloudiness, but the wind stayed calm for most of the day and the soft greens from the previous weekend's rain made for good scoring conditions. Rick Lewis got back to his winning ways with a very steady performance. Rick shot a fine 5 over par 77 with no double bogeys on the card. Rick was superb on the four par 3's playing them in 1 under par. Jim DiBiase was second best with an 80. In the Net Division competition, Nate Liskov was in complete control. Nate shot a fine gross score of 81, and was an easy winner in the net by 3 strokes over Dan Chicoine and Rick Lewis.
Summer briefly returned for the Thursday, October 22 event at Walpole CC. By afternoon, it was in the mid-70's, for the event at this well maintained private club. The quick greens claimed quite a few victims not accustomed speedy greens with a lot of slope. Rick Lewis played the first 11 holes in just 3 over par before making 3 consecutive bogeys on holes 12-14. Rick chipped up to just behind the hole from down in front of the green on the 518 yard downhill fifteenth hole, and watched as the ball crept back down the slope for a tap in birdie. Rick made a nice par on the 363 yard sixteenth hole that bends around the corner to the right, and then made a par on the 185 yard par 3 seventeenth from 24 feet away. Rick got on the 417 yard par 4 eighteenth after a nice drive to the middle of the fairway, but putted off the green from above the hole and made a bogey to finish with a 6 over par 77. Doug Bray was tied for the lead in this event after 12 holes also at only 3 over par. The 368 yard par 4 dogleg left thirteenth got him, and he finished this hole with a triple bogey 7. Doug played the 14-18 in just 2 over to finish with a 8 over 79.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Waverly Oaks for the Monday, October 19 event and bid adieu to this nice layout before its scheduled closing at the end of November. After snow and rain the previous day, the morning cleared, but clouds quickly moved in and the start of the round was windy and cool. By mid-afternoon the sun was out and conditions got more pleasant. Doug Bray played a mediocre first nine holes at 5 over par 41. This all changed beginning with the 386 yard 10th hole. From the middle of the fairway, Doug holed out from about 135 yards for an eagle. 5 consecutive pars followed and now Doug was only 3 over par for 15 holes. Doug made a bogey on the long 600 yard par 5 fifteenth, and smartly got up and down from just off the green on the uphill 210 yard par 3 seventeenth for a par. A disappointing bogey on the shortish 360 yard finishing hole got Doug in at even par 36 on the second nine for a fine score of 77. In the Net Division A competition, Rhode Island member, Tom Bush, was 1 stroke better than Doug with a net score of 1 under par. Lew Weitzman, Ron Violette, and Rick Kelly all played well, and finished in a tie for third at 2 over par net. In the Net Division B competition, Holger Stoltze and Carlton Smith were tied for first with 1 under par net scores of 71. Loi Nguyen and Dick Malo also played well and on this cool day, and tied for third with even par net scores.
The Saturday, October 17 event at Sandy Burr turned out to be a decent day for golf despite dire weather forecasts from earlier in the week. It was bright and cool with the afternoon temperature right around 48 degrees with abundant sunshine. Rick Lewis is starting to show that he can now dominate the field with his improved swing and excellent short game. Rick started off on Saturday with birdies on two of his first 4 holes and played the first nine in even par 36. Rick stayed just as steady on the second with pars on holes 10- 12. A pushed tee shot on the 180 yard par 3 thirteenth cost him a stroke. After pars on 13 & 14, Rick made a bogey on the 397 yard par 4 sixteenth after missing the green. Rick rolled in a 20 footer for birdie on the 511 yard par 5 seventeenth to get back to 1 over par on the day. Rick just missed a scrambling par on the 391 yard uphill par 4 eighteenth when his 4 foot putt nearly went in after finding the rim of the hole. Rick's 2 over par 74 was 3 better than Johnathan Law who was trying to make it two straight wins. In the Net Division competition, Rich McCabe, who recently joined B.A.G.S., played a superb round of golf. Rich shot a 1 over par gross 37 on the opening nine for an incredible 25 stableford points with unheard of 7 net birdies. Rich cruised home with a gross 43 on the second nine for 18 more stableford points. Well done, Rich! 5 points back in second place was the above mentioned Rick Lewis. John Faucher showed some of his old form, and took third position with 37 points or 1 under par net.
B.A.G.S. visited George Wright GC for the Sunday, October 11 event. It was a bright, cool, and breezy day in the lower 60's. Despite the persistent breezes, there were several outstanding performances. Due to the construction on the par 4 thirteenth hole, the hole played as a par 3 at around 125 yards. Johnathan Law played some exceptional golf on a day where the golf course played particularly tough because of the wind and some difficult hole positions. Johnathan was 2 under par through 7 holes before making bogeys on the 180 yard par 3 eighth and 450 yard par 4 ninth. Johnathan made the only birdie on the day on the 460 yard par 4 tenth. He played the 11 - 14 in 1 over par, and then made his 5th birdie in the round on the 510 yard par 5 fifteenth to get back to even par on the round. Johnathan finished with pars on 17 & 18 and a place in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for a score of even par or better. Bryan McAllister, in his first B.A.G.S.' event after recent becoming a member, took second place with a score of 76. In the Net Division A competition, J. Law's net score of 66 was 4 better than Steve Swanson's 70. Steve played really well, and shot the third best gross score on the day with a 77. The above mentioned Bryan McAllister took third position. In the Net Division B competition, Neil Denenberg, who just missed out winning at Ballymeade CC, continued his good play and finished in a tie for first place with Johnnie Balfour, who had his best result in his first year as a B.A.G.S.' member, with 1 under par net scores. Third place went to B.A.G.S.' veteran Gary Schirmer. Ballymeade was reduced to a one day tournament after heavy rain passed over the area on Saturday. Sunday was just the opposite with a light balmy breeze, abundant sunshine, and the temperature into the lower 70's. This was an ideal day for Cape golf, and it produced some fabulous scores. Never in the long, 16 year, history of this event has any member shot even par on this challenging course. Brian Boyle accomplished this feat on Sunday. Brian, now in his 11th year as a B.A.G.S.' member, began as a 15 handicapper, has now accomplished, with a lot of work and dedication put into his game, what no one else in B.A.G.S. has been able to do before. Brian, with the help of back to back birdies on 7 & 8 shot a 2 under par score of 34 on the opening nine. After making a bogey on the 527 yard par 5 tenth hole, Brian was able to get a par on the always tough 165 yard par 3 eleventh which has a semi island green. Brian made a bogey on the 403 yard par 4 twelfth hole, and went on a par streak after that with pars on holes 13-15. Brian made a nice birdie putt on the 156 yard par 3 sixteenth from 13 feet and finished with a bogey on seventeen and a par on the 500 yard par 5 finishing hole for a 2 over 38 and a eighteen hole total of even par 72. Tom Dromgoole, in the same group as Brian, was just 2 behind after nine holes with an even par 36 of his own. Tom fell back on the second nine, but his birdie on 18 got him second place with a 77, one shot better than Doug Bray. In the Net Division A competition, Brian B. was in much closer battle for first. Brian's net score of 66 was just 1 better than Neil Denenberg who seeming had this event won, but got bitten by the 18th hole. Many a good round has been brought down by this 500 yard par 5 that requires precision on the tee shot and the lay up before the pond that lurks down below the fairway in front of the green. Neil needed only a net bogey to tie Brian for first, but came away with 0 points after making a triple bogey. Tom Dromgoole took third position with a net 71. Doug Bray was in fourth with net par. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member, Pat Hogan, was much the best with a superb net 66.
B.A.G.S. returned to Andover CC after a 15 year absence for the Wednesday, September 30 event. The members and their guests enjoyed a fine day for golf on this classic Donald Ross course. Mark Karski was the best on this day with a fine score of 6 over par 78 on his first trip over this 6737 yard layout. In the Net Division A competition, Mark Lyons returned to his form of old with a fine gross score of 82. Mark started off 4 over par after his first 4 holes, but played the rest of the way in at only 6 over with 2 birdies. Mark's winning net score of 71 was 1 better than Richard Tenby, who played some very solid golf. In the Net Division B competition, Dick Malo was all the way back with a fine win coming in with a 3 under par net score ending a season long slump. Carlos Duarte continued his improvement taking second position with a 2 under par net score. In the 3 way tie for third were: Steve Clifford, Glenn McIntyre, and Loi Nguyen at 1 over par net.
Summer made another return for the Monday, September 28 event at Pawtucket CC for this classic 100 year old course. The course as always was in spectacular condition with putting greens as true as any we play all year. Dave Bergeson made his presence felt in this event in both the low gross and Net Division A competition as he was in compete control of his game on the day. Dave shot a fine 5 over par 74, and was in at 1 better than Jeff Mucciarone on a day where the Blue tee markers were pushed all the way back on every hole and the course played as tough as it can. Dave B.'s net score of 71 was good for a 2 stroke win over Steve Ross and Rhode Island member, Anthony Leone. In the Net Division B competition played from the White tee markers, Rhode Island member Mike Farrell was red hot. Mike shot 8 under par and was an easy winner.
Summer like weather returned for the Monday, September, 21 event at Norfolk GC. The temperature quickly ascended into the upper 70's by mid-morning, with mild breezes under a cloudless sky. The course, as usual, was in marvelous condition with easily some of the best and quickest putting greens we've seen all year. Rick Lewis, in his initial trip over this superb 103 year old layout in Westwood, played some excellent golf. Rick went around the first time in just 1 over par 36. The 405 yard par 4 13th got him, as well as several others, as he putted off this treacherously fast green, and took a double bogey 6. Rick played the rest of the holes in even par, and came in with a fine 4 over par 74. Rick got the win by 2 strokes over Lew Weitzman. Lew started off in rough shape after having a lost ball on the first hole, but made par with his provisional for a double bogey 6. Lew had another double on the 492 yard par 5 seventh, and finished the first nine with a 41. Lew got his revenge the second time around. Lew started off with 3 straight birdies, however, he made a double on the ridiculously fast 13th green, but played the rest of the closing holes in 1 over par for a fine score of 35. Rick Lewis and Lew tied for first in the Net Division A competition with even par net scores. Steve Swanson played well, and took third with a 2 over par net score. In the Net Division B competition, Larry Rooney was the best in a battle of attrition. Larry's net score of 73 was 1 better than Neil Denenberg's 74.
Sandy Burr was in very nice condition for the Saturday, September 19 event. It was a cool and breezy day, but abundant sunshine made for a very pleasant day to be out playing. Rick Lewis has been on a real good streak lately, and had 4 birdies on the day, and shot a fine 4 over par 76 despite making a triple bogey on 6 and a double bogey 15. Johnathan Law turned it around quite impressively after shooting a 5 over par 41 on the first nine by coming back with even an par 36 on the second nine to take second place in the low gross competition. In the Net Division A competition, new member the year, Chris Adamo, in just his second event as a B.A.G.S.' member, was easily the best with 39 points or 3 under par net. Chris had third low gross on the day with a 78, and looked like a possible winner of the low gross before running out of gas and making bogeys on 17 & 18. Mark DelVecchio also liked the playing conditions at Sandy Burr, and shot a very fine gross score of 84 and finished in a tie for second in the net with the above mentioned Rick Lewis at even par net 72. In the Net Division B competition, the scores were not very impressive as the windy conditions seemed to affect these players the most. Holger Stoltze was the story of the day when he made a hole in one on the 135 yard third hole. Holger will get a free membership in B.A.G.S. for this achievement. The 5 stableford points he made on the hole was also quite useful as he and Dave Lee both finished in a tie for first place with 33 stableford points.
It was a cool start for the Wednesday, September, 16 event at Hickory Hill GC. It warmed up into the 60's by mid-day, and there were several fine performances. Jeff Mucciarone took the low gross title with the help of some steady play on the second nine with a 1 over par score of 36 coming in. Jeff's total of 75 was 2 better than Steve Ross and Chris Kreilkamp. Steve and Chris had nearly identical cards of 40-37-77, and both shared first place in the Net Division A competition. Nick Spada played well again, and the champion from the Indian Pond CC event took third position with an even par net score. In the Net Division B competition, Mike Harney was the best. Mike loves this course, and it showed. Mike's gross score of 85 was his best in a B.A.G.S.' event since we last played this course 1 year ago. Mike had 6 net birdies on the day plus a net eagle and no zero point holes. Mike total of 41 stableford points or 5 under par net was 2 better than John Matte, who had his best result this year. John shot a fine gross score of 85, the best on the year for this 18 year member of B.A.G.S. Dick Millen and Ray Fearnley also played quite well, and finished in a tie for third with 2 under par net scores.
A rainy morning kept the fair weather golfers away, but more than half the field showed up for the Saturday, September 12 event at Franklin Park GC. By the time the final group teed off, the last of the light rain ended, and it turned out to be a very decent day for golf. The course had only a few wet spots in the low areas, and the greens were in perfect condition and lightning quick on downhill putts. Rick Lewis and John Law played this first nine holes in 1 over par 35 as did Tom Dromgoole. Doug Bray was just 2 back at 37. Rick and John played the more difficult second nine in 3 over par 39's, while Doug had only 1 bogey and all the rest pars for a 37. All three tied for the low gross title with 74's. Doug and Rick also tied for first for low net with 69's, while John Law was just 1 stroke back for third with Paul Mitchell.
B.A.G.S. traveled to Norton CC for the Wednesday, September 9 event. The fine string of perfect early September golf days continued with the temperature into the upper 60's, and plenty of sunshine. Jeff Mucciarone wasn't seriously challenged in this event after playing his first nine holes in 2 over par, and his 7 over par 78 was the only score under 80 on this tight course. Rhode Island veteran member, Don Denuccio, had second low gross with an 81, and won the Net Division A competition with a 2 under par net score of 69. Ron Violette was in contention again, and finished in a tie for second with Mike Harney with even par net scores. In the Net Division B competition, Bill Gray got his first win in over 2 years with a fine score of 1 under par net for a 3 stroke victory. Peter Elliott took second position with a 2 over par net score of 73.
There was a touch of fall in the air for the Sunday, September, 6 event at Atlantic CC. The temperature never did get into the 70's, but abundant sunshine made it a quite pleasant day for golf despite a swirling wind which had an effect on the scoring. Jay Leonard had a 1 stroke lead after nine holes with a 2 over par 38. Jay then went on one those steaks that he's proven capable of, and put the tournament away by playing the second nine in even par 36, for a fine score of 2 over par 74. Jeff Mucciarone made no birdies for one of the few times this year, and took second with a 78. In the Net Division A competition, Jay's 1 over par net score of 73 was 1 better than the straight hitting Mike McLaughlin who found the fairway on nearly every hole. In the Net Division B competition, Ted van Sickle and Mike Nelson were the best. Mike had a 1 point lead over Ted at the turn, but Ted, who had not made a single gross par on the day through the thirteenth hole, pared 3 of the last 5 holes to catch Mike with 37 points. Gary Carlin played well, and took third position with a very fine score of even par net or 36 points.
Indian Pond CC was in fabulous condition for the Wednesday, September, 2 event date. The weather cooperated providing an absolutely perfect early September day with a deep blue sky, light breezes, and an ideal temperature for golf in the mid-70's. A group of over 70 members enjoyed this fine day for golf. Joe LeRoy, a member of Indian Pond CC as well as B.A.G.S., opened with a birdie on the 375 yard par 4 first, and shot even par 36 on the opening nine. Joe was only at 1 over par on the tee of the 182 yard par 3 seventeenth, but a poor tee shot lead to Joe's only double bogey on the day. Joe finished with a par on 18 for a fine score of 3 over par 75. Jeff Mucciarone got it to 1 under par after a birdie on the short par 4 twelfth hole. This was Jeff's third birdie in his last 5 holes. However, Jeff made bogeys on his next three to go back to 2 over par. Jeff made pars on 17 & 18, but a bogey on the relatively easy, straight away, 548 par 5 eighteenth cost him the outright win, and he settled for a tie for first with Joe LeRoy. In the Net Division A competition, Nick Spada got his first win of the year with a superb closing 8 hole stretch. Nick played this stretch in 2 over gross for 20 stableford points which included 5 net birdies, and turned a so-so round into a winner with 39 points or 3 under par net. Ron Violette, the Net Division B club champion, who graduated to Net A for this event, proved that he belongs here with a fine gross score of 82 off the back tees, and his total 38 points was good enough for second position. In the Net Division B competition, Rhode Island member Carl Mattson was the best with 35 points as Net B played nearly the same yardage as Net A because of aerated middle tee boxes. Jeff Bartlett, who has been steadily improving in his first year as a B.A.G.S.' member, took second place, his best result so far, with 34 points. Ron Axelrod, Ray Fearnley, and Frank Collins also played well, and shared third place with 33 points.
It was a superb day for golf for Sunday, August 30 event at Blackstone National. After a wet Saturday, the sky cleared for Sunday with the temperature right around 78 degrees by afternoon with light breezes. Johnathan Law played brilliant golf for the first 13 holes in this event. Johnathan made the turn at 2 under par 34 with 3 birdies. With another birdie and three pars, Johnathan got it to 3 under par after 13 holes. Triple bogeys on 14 and 15 stopped all the momentum. Johnathan came in with a 4 over par score of 76. This was good enough for a 1 stoke win over the much improved Rick Lewis, who was the winner in his last time out at Halifax. In the Net Division Competition, Peter Ross had his best ever gross score in a B.A.G.S.' event in his third year of competition with a fine score of 81. Peter had 5 net birdies on the second nine after putting away his driver and going with a fairway metal off the tee, and finished in first place with 41 stableford points. In a three way tie for second were: Brian Boyle, who shot a fine gross of 78, and the above mentioned Johnathan and Rick.
It turned much cooler for the Thursday, August 27 event at Highfields with temperature at the start of the event only in the upper 60's as the recent heat and humidity disappeared. Jeff Mucciarone took complete control of this event after the first nine holes with an even par score of 36. Jeff was still at even par after a birdie on the short 330 yard par 4 twelfth hole. Jeff made bogeys on 3 of the next 4 holes to go to 3 over. Jeff finished with pars on 17 & 18 for a 75. No one else in the field broke 80. In the Net Division A competition, Kazuo Noda and Wayne Morrison both played exceptionally well and shot gross scores 80. With identical handicaps, both tied for first place with excellent scores of 2 under par net. Also playing well and tying for second were Glenn McIntyre and Mark Lyons. In the Net Division B competition, there were three superb performances. Paul McCurley played the first 13 holes in just 4 over par gross for an astounding total of 36 points or 10 under par net. Paul cooled off dramatically after that with just 5 more points over the last 5 holes for a total of 41 points. Jim Kelly also liked the opening nine better for scoring as he made the turn with 24 points, and reached the 13th tee with 30 points before losing some of the magic. However, Jim made a par on the 490 yard par 5 finishing hole good for 3 more stableford points and a tie for first with Paul M. and Rhode Island Division competitor, Dave Izzo.
The warm weather continued for the Monday, August 24 event at the CC of Halifax. The course was in great condition despite the heavy rain from thunderstorms the previous day. Rick Lewis, who has struggled somewhat this year until recent events, which included a top 4 finish in the Society Championship, was easily the best on this day. Rick hit a lot of fairways and putted extremely well on these fast, smooth greens was in with a 38-38-76. A testament to his dominant play on the day was evidenced by the fact that no one else in the field could break 80. In the Net Division A competition, Brian Wilson in his first year as a B.A.G.S.' member got his first win. Brian had second low gross on the day with an 80, and nipped the above mentioned Rick Lewis by 1 stroke with a net 70. In the Net Division B competition, Bill Crawford from Rehoboth was the best with a net score of 67. Joanne Latour played well as did Peter Elliott, and they shared second spot with net score of 2 under par 70.
South Shore CC was in very nice condition for the Saturday, August 22 event. The day was a continuation of the hot and humid weather pattern, but a nice breeze throughout the day made for reasonably pleasant playing conditions. The Co-Champion from the Olde Scotland Links 36 hole event, Jay Leonard, was still in great form for this event. Jay played his usual consistent game with no double bogeys on the card, a couple of birdies, 2 bogeys, and all the rest pars for a fine 1 over par 73. Johnathan Law, who won here in his first ever B.A.G.S.' event in 2004, reached the 476 yard par 5 18th green with a 9 iron and had an eagle putt which would have put him in at even par 72. Johnathan missed that putt and the come back putt for birdie and finished in second position with a 74. Jeff Mucciarone, who had 4 birdies, on the day took third with a 75. Dave Truesdell and Tom Dromgoole also played well, and finished tied for fourth with 4 over par 76's. In the Net Division A competition also from the Blue tees, Johnathan Law was a 1 stroke winner over Tom Dromgoole. In the Net Division B competition from the White tees, Dave Lee put it all together on the second nine. David shot his handicap on the opening nine with a 46 gross score good for 18 stableford points. Dave played the next 4 holes in even par net or 8 points. Then Dave got really hot. Dave played the last 5 holes in even par gross with pars on each hole which was good for 16 stableford points. Dave's total of 42 points was 7 better than Russ D'Auria and John Matte who shared second place.
It was a hot and humid day for the Wednesday, August 19 event at Poquoy Brook GC. The course, as usual, was in nice condition and there several fine performances. Jeff Mucciarone fresh off his fine performance on the weekend at Olde Scotland Links, shot a 4 over par 76 to win by a single stroke over Lew Weitzman. Lew reached the front of the green on the 481 yard sharp dogleg left par 5, and had a very good shot at eagle and a tie for the low gross. The putt just missed going in, and Lew tapped in for a birdie 4 and a fine score of 77. Lew's net score of 68 got him a tie for first with Chris Kreilkamp, who also played well. Gary Carlin started off with a birdie on the opening hole at his home course, but finished with a double bogey, and had to settle for third position with 39 points or 3 under par net. Net Division B Champion from the Olde Scotland Links weekend event Ron Violette, continued his good play, and took 4th spot at 2 under par.
The August heat wave lasted through the weekend of the 15th and 16th for the 22nd Society Championship at Olde Scotland Links. The temperature was above 90 degrees both days and humid as well, but no thunderstorms. There was some tremendous play on the weekend as the members participating used their B.A.G.S.' tournament experience to respond well to the pressure. Last year's defending Champion and 3 time winner of this event, Jeff Mucciarone played all 36 holes with his main rival, Jay Leonard, and both players nearly had matching cards for the 36 hole event that sent the 4 leaders off together in Sunday's final round. Jeff and Jay both played Saturday's opening round in even par 72. Steve Caputo, who's been on a hot streak lately, was just 2 strokes behind with a fine 2 over par score of 74. Tom Dromgoole, a two-time Net Division A champion in this event, shot a superb 3 over par 75 and made it into the final foursome on Sunday with a good chance to win. Joe Pimental was just 4 off the lead with a 76, and played the opening nine in 2 under par. On Sunday, Jay bogeyed the first hole, but made a birdies on the 545 yard par 5 sixth and the 378 yard par 4 seventh hole, and finished the opening nine at 1 under par 35. Jeff was just 1 shot back. None of the other first day contenders could stay close to this torrid pace. Jeff fell to 2 behind after a bogey to Jay's par on the 389 yard par 4 fifteenth, the number 1 stroke hole. A par on the 135 yard par 3 sixteenth to Jay's bogey got Jeff to just 1 stroke back, and a birdie on the 341 yard par 4 seventeenth brought the match to even. Both players reached the 523 yard par 5 finishing hole in regulation. Jeff made his birdie putt, and the pressure was on Jay to make. Jay calmly rolled in his side hill breaker for birdie and he and Jeff were co-Champions in a great match. Dave Truesdell took third with at 9 over par shooting a very consistent 77-76. Rick Lewis was fourth at 10 over par. In the Net Davison A competition, Bob Steward and Rey LeMaine battled it out right until the end. Bob shot a net 71 the first day, and was 2 shots behind Rey LeMaine and Steve Caputo. Bob put it all together on Sunday, and came in with 40 points or 4 under par net which tied for best net score on the day in Net Division A with Doug Bray who shot a fabulous gross score of 2 over par 74. Rey LeMaine also played well on Sunday, and had a tie for the second best net score on Sunday with Dave Truesdell and John Law, who shot a gross 74, with a net 70, and finished in a tie for first at 5 under par net total with Bob. In the Net Division B competition, Ron Violette, who is extremely comfortable at this local course for him, was by far the best. Tom Simard took the opening round lead with a 4 under par net score of 68. Ron was just 1 point behind with 39 stableford points. Larry Mintzer and Chris Kreilkamp were tied for third with 37 points. On Sunday, Ron was as hot as the weather. His 83 on Saturday was his best gross score in a B.A.G.S.' event. On Sunday, Ron smashed the 80 barrier with a superb score of 78 good for a prodigious total for 44 stableford points and a weekend total of 11 under par net. Well done, Ron! Larry Mintzer would well have been the winner on any other weekend were it not for Ron. Larry started the day only 2 points behind Ron, and went out on Sunday and shot 2 over par gross on the opening nine for a stupendous total of 25 points, and had a 1 point lead over Ron at that point. On the second nine, Larry was still even with Ron after 14 holes. However, Larry only made 4 points over the last 4 holes in the heat, while Ron closed with 10 points including a gross birdie on 18 for 4 points. Chris Kreilkamp was very consistent both days, and took third position with a 4 under par net total. Carlos Duarte closed strongly on Sunday with 40 points, and took 4th. Tom Simard, Saturday's leader fell back on Sunday shooting over par net, bur still took 5th position.
B.A.G.S.' made its final trip to River bend for the '09 season on Wednesday, August 12. It was a fine day for golf with an overcast sky keeping the temperature only in the 70's. As usual on the course, there were many fine scores on the opening nine. Johnathan Law shot just 1 over par 36 and had a 1 shot lead over Ron Jacques. Johnathan matched the card for the next 6 holes to remain at 1 over par. Ron fell 2 more strokes behind going 2 over on that stretch of holes. A poor tee shot on the 572 yard par 5 sixteenth hole lead to a triple bogey 8 for Johnathan. The effects lingered to the 195 yard par 3 seventeenth where Johnathan made a double bogey 5. Ron also struggled on the long narrow 16th, and made a double. Ron made up 2 more shots on 17 with a par, was tied for the lead. Both players made par on the 576 yard par 5 finishing hole, and were in with 6 over par 77's. Ron's net score of 68 was 3 better than Andrew Leonard who tore up the first nine with an incredible even par gross score of 35, and had the lead in the tournament. This great score was good for a massive total of 25 stableford points. On the tighter second nine, Andrew crash landed with just 11 points, but held on to second place.
It was a superb day for golf for the Saturday, August 12 event at Acushnet River Valley. The temperature was right about perfect at 80 degrees, the humidity was low, and the gentle breezes made for a good scoring day. Jeff Mucciarone, who holds the B.A.G.S.' tournament record scoring here with a 68, seems to always play well here. Jeff played the opening nine in 2 over par 38 with back to back birdies on 4 & 5. Jeff got it to even par after birdies on 12 & 13, but made bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish at 2 over par 74. Rick Lewis, who's been off form for much of the season was right there with Jeff until he made a double bogey 7 on the 605 yard par 5 fourteenth. Rick took second place with a 5 over par 77. In the Net Division A competition, John Danchik also returned to form with a fine gross score of 81 good for 38 stableford points, and a 2 shot victory. In the Net Division B competition, Buzz Speers and Chris Hulswit ended up in a tie for first with 40 points each. Buzz shot a very fine gross score of 81, his best in over a year. Chris Hulswit made the turn with only 14 points and the possibility of winning this event must have seemed dim. After a double bogey 6 on the tenth hole, Chris only had 15 points. A par on the 145 yard par 3 eleventh hole seemed to wake Chris from his slumber. Chris played the remaining 7 holes in just 1 over par gross for an incredible 22 stableford points. Chris's total of 40 points got him into a tie for first place with Buzz. Well done, Chris! Ron Violette also played extremely well, and took third position with 39 points or 3 under par net.
Allendale CC was in fabulous condition for the Wednesday, August 5 event. The greens were smooth and fast and the fairways were immaculate. The course is fun to play with a good variety of holes and plenty of room for errant tee shots. The sloping greens required some local knowledge and a good deal of skill. Jeff Mucciarone was the only participant to break 80 with a 6 over par 78. The greens got Jeff at the end with tough 3 putts on the last two holes. Steve Swanson was in at 81 for second low gross. Andrew Leonard had a good scoring day. Andrew played the opening nine in just 5 over par gross good for 21 stableford points. Andrew's eighteen hole total of 38 or 2 under par net was good for a 1 point victory over Steve Ross in the Net Division A competition.
Crosswinds GC was in nice condition for the Sunday, August, 2 event. B.A.G.S.' finally got an August event here without any incidences of thunderstorm activity, and there were many fine scores on this challenging course. Mark Karski returned to prominence in the low gross competition after a year's absence from B.A.G.S.' competition. Mark was just 1 over par through 14 holes before making a bogey on the 422 yard par 4 fifteenth hole. After a par on 16, Mark made a nice deuce on the downhill 180 yard par 3 seventeenth. After a poor tee shot on 18, Mark was satisfied to make a bogey 5 on the 386 yard finishing hole for a fine 3 over par score of 74. Steve Caputo was tied for lead in the event after 14 holes. Steve shot 2 over 38 on the first nine, and then became red hot with birdies on 4 of the next 5 holes to get to 1 under par. However, Steve could only make bogeys on the 4 finishing holes and came in at 3 over par 75. Brian Boyle also made a diligent attempt for the victory. Brian played the opening nine in even par 36. After a birdie on the 492 yard par 5 fourteenth, Brian was at 1 under par and tied with Steve C. for the lead. Brian, in the same manor as Steve Caputo, bogeyed the last 4 holes, and was in at 75 and a tie for second. In the Net Division competition, there were three superb performances. Steve Ross shot a fine gross score of 77, and was in a tie for first with the above mentioned Mark Karski and John Sawyer with 4 under par net scores. John made a serious bid to break 90, something he hasn't done in several years in a B.A.G.S.' event, with a nice 42 on the opening nine that included 2 birdies in a row on 2 & 3. John played both par three's in even par on the second nine, but had no other pars and shot 49 for a total of 91 gross.
After an hour and a half rain delay, Blackstone National dried out quite well for the Thursday, July 30 event. Jim Doyle won his first low gross title in his first year as a B.A.G.S.' member with a fine 7 over par 79. Just 1 stroke behind in a tie for second were Steve Jackson and Lew Weitzman. In the Net Division A competition, Ed Clough made it two consecutive wins and both in convincing mode. Ed shot 4 over gross 40 on the opening nine good for 21 stableford points or 3 under par net. After playing the first 6 holes of the second nine in 6 over par gross for 11 points, Ed closed with a rush. Ed made a birdie on the 570 yard par 5 sixteenth, and made pars on 17 & 18 for a total of 10 stableford points on the final 3 holes for an 18 holes total of 42. Well done, Ed! Buzz Speers had the lead after nine holes. Buzz shot a 3 over gross score of 39 good for a whopping 22 stableford points. Buzz cooled off on the next 6 holes with just 1 par and only 7 points. However, Buzz made par on the last 3 holes for 9 points and second place at 2 under par net. Lew Weitzman continued his fine play, and took third place with a 1 under par net. In the Net Division B competition, Peter Elliott was definitely the man. Peter was on fire on the opening nine with 3 net birdies, a net eagle, and all the rest net pars for an astounding total of 23 stableford points. Peter's second was nearly as incredible. Peter had 2 more net eagles, and 3 more net birdies for 22 more points Pete's total of 45 points earned him a place in B.A.G.S.' history and a spot in the B.A.G.S.' Record Book for recording 45 or more points in an event.
Norfolk GC was in excellent condition for the Monday, July 27 event. The greens were smooth and fast and the fairways and tee boxes were also in great shape at this fine private club located 1/4 mile off Rt. 128 in Westwood. Jeff Mucciarone, was in excellent form for this one and was by far the best. Jeff played the first nine in even par with 1 bogey and 1 birdie. Two bogeys on the second nine were offset by 2 birdies for an even par score of 70 and another entry into the B.A.G.S.' Record Book. Well back in second place with a 79 was Charlie Lent for his best finish this year.. There was a three way tie for first in the Net Division competition. Peter Elliott, Buzz Speers, and Frank Shaw all played surpassingly well, coming with 38 points or 2 under par net. We'll be returning here for another event here later in September. This event site should be on your event calendar.
The members participating in the Saturday, July 25 event at Passaconaway CC enjoyed a fabulous day for golf. The temperature was in the mid-80's with a nice breeze and no threat of thunderstorms. Will Peishoff made the trip to Southern New Hampshire for his first event of the year, and he showed no signs of rust. Will got through the long - from the Blue (back) tees - at 3570 yards first nine, with a 1 over par score of 36. On the shorter second nine at 3285 yards, Will shot a 2 over par 38 for a superb eighteen hole total of 3 over par 74. Brian Boyle also played quite well and was just 3 strokes back for second place. In the Net Division A competition, Will's 1 under par net score of 70 was just good enough to beat the duo of: Steve Ross, and Dave Truesdell. In the Net Division B competition, Russ D'Auria was definitely the man. Russ played just all right on the longer opening nine at 3300 yards from the White tees with 16 points with the help of pars on 8 & 9. This, however, was the prelude to a fabulous score of just 2 over par gross on the second nine good for the weighty total of 24 stableford points or 6 under par net. Russ' total of 40 points was good for a 2 point victory over Bud McGrath and the consistent Tony Carmona.
